BACKGROUND: Invasive bacterial disease (IBD; including pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children in low-income countries.
METHODS: We analyzed data from a surveillance study of suspected community-acquired IBD in children <15 years of age in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 2005 to 2013 before introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV). Tuberculosis in elephants is primarily caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We identified mixed M. tuberculosis lineage infection in 2 captive elephants in Nepal by using spoligotyping and large sequence polymorphism. One elephant was infected with Indo-Oceanic and East African-Indian (CAS-Delhi) lineages; the other was infected with Indo-Oceanic and East Asian (Beijing) lineages.

A patient with lepromatous leprosy, while on WHO multidrug therapy (MDT) for multibacillary disease, was diagnosed as having dapsone syndrome with recurrent episodes of bullous lesions on the lower extremities for 4-5 years. A hospital-based retrospective study on childhood leprosy was carried out at B.R. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, covering the period April 1998-April 2002. 20 (4.45%) leprosy patients were detected in children aged 6-14 years. The male:female ratio was 4:1. History of contact was found in 10% of the patients. The commonest type of leprosy was borderline tuberculoid leprosy (550%), followed by borderline lepromatous leprosy (301%). 319 patients with a solar retinopathy were seen in an eye clinic in Nepal within 20 months. All patients had either a positive history of sun-gazing or typical circumscribed scars in the foveal area. In more than 80% of the patients the visual acuity was 6/12 or better and did not deteriorate over time. 126 (40%) patients had a history of gazing at the sun during an eclipse, 33 (10%) were sun worshipers and 4 (1%) were in both categories.
