Neurophysiology of the Superior Laryngeal Nerve in an In Vivo Rat Model.

OBJECTIVE: The superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) is fundamental in laryngeal sensation, cough reflex, and pitch control. SLN injury has substantial consequences including altered sensation, aspiration, and dysphonia. To date, in vivo measurement of the SLN remains elusive. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of recording motor and sensory evoked potentials in a rat SLN model. METHODS: Twenty-two rat hemi-laryngeal preparations (n = 11) were obtained from 4-month-old Sprague-Dawley rats and included in this study. Compound motor action potentials (CMAPs) and motor unit number

The two decades brainclinics research archive for insights in neurophysiology (TDBRAIN) database.

In neuroscience, electroencephalography (EEG) data is often used to extract features (biomarkers) to identify neurological or psychiatric dysfunction or to predict treatment response. At the same time neuroscience is becoming more data-driven, made possible by computational advances. In support of biomarker development and methodologies such as training Artificial Intelligent (AI) networks we present the extensive Two Decades-Brainclinics Research Archive for Insights in Neurophysiology (TDBRAIN) EEG database. This clinical lifespan database (5-89 years) contains resting-state, raw EEG-data co…

Peripheral polyneuropathy from electrodiagnostic tests: a 10-year etiology and neurophysiology overview.

BACKGROUND: Polyneuropathies are characterized by a symmetrical impairment of the peripheral nervous system, resulting in sensory, motor and/or autonomic deficits. Due to the heterogeneity of causes, an etiological diagnosis for polyneuropathy is challenging. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the main causes of polyneuropathy confirmed by electrodiagnostic (EDX) tests in a tertiary service and its neurophysiological aspects. METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study from a neuromuscular disorders center included individuals whose electrodiagnostic tests performed betw

Far lateral lumbar disc herniation part 1: Imaging, neurophysiology and clinical features.

Far lateral lumbar disc herniations (FLLDH) represent a separate category of disc pathology which includes both intraforaminal and extraforaminal lumbar disc herniations, that are characterized by a peculiar clinical presentation, diagnostic and treatment modalities as compared to the more frequent median and paramedian disc hernias. Surgical treatment often represents the only effective weapon for the cure of this disease and over the years different approaches have been developed that can reach the region of the foramen or external to it, with different degrees of invasiveness. The diagnosis

Pallidal deep brain stimulation and intraoperative neurophysiology for treatment of poststroke hemiballism.

Deep brain stimulation is a recognized and effective treatment for several movement disorders. Nevertheless, the efficacy of this intervention on abnormal movements secondary to structural brain pathologies is less consistent. In this report, we describe a case of hemiballism-hemichorea due to a peripartum ischemic stroke-treated with deep brain stimulation of the globus pallidus internus. Patient observed marked improvement in her symptoms at long-term follow-up. Neurophysiologic data revealed lower globus pallidus internus firing rates compared to other hyperkinetic disorders. Pallidal deep

Neurophysiology of the pelvic floor in clinical practice: a systematic literature review.

Neurophysiological testing of the pelvic floor is recognized as an essential tool to identify pathophysiological mechanisms of pelvic floor disorders, support clinical diagnosis, and aid in therapeutic decisions. Nevertheless, the diagnostic value of these tests in specific neurological diseases of the pelvic floor is not completely clarified. Seeking to fill this gap, the members of the Neurophysiology of the Pelvic Floor Study Group of the Italian Clinical Neurophysiology Society performed a systematic review of the literature to gather available evidence for and against the utility of neuro…

Targeting neuronal dysfunction in schizophrenia with nicotine: Evidence from neurophysiology to neuroimaging.

Patients with schizophrenia self-administer nicotine at rates higher than is self-administered for any other psychiatric illness. Although the reasons are unclear, one hypothesis suggests that nicotine is a form of 'self-medication' in order to restore normal levels of nicotinic signaling and target abnormalities in neuronal function associated with cognitive processes. This brief review discusses evidence from neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies in schizophrenia patients that nicotinic agonists may effectively target dysfunctional neuronal circuits in the illness. Evidence suggests th

American Clinical Neurophysiology Society Guideline 5: Minimum Technical Standards for Pediatric Electroencephalography.

This revision to the EEG Guidelines is an update incorporating the current electroencephalography technology and practice. It was previously published as Guideline 2. Similar to the prior guideline, it delineates the aspects of Guideline 1 that should be modified for neonates and young children. Recording conditions for photic stimulation and hyperventilation are revised to enhance the provocation of epileptiform discharges. Revisions recognize the difficulties involved in performing an EEG under sedation in young children. Recommended neonatal EEG montages are displayed for the reduced set of

Neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and dysfunction of the female lower urinary tract: a review.

The 2 major functions of the lower urinary tract are the storage and emptying of urine. These processes are controlled by complex neurophysiologic mechanisms and are subject to injury and disease. When there is disruption of the neurologic control centers, dysfunction of the lower urinary tract may occur. This is sometimes referred to as the "neurogenic bladder." The manifestation of dysfunction depends on the level of injury and severity of disruption. Patients with lesions above the spinal cord often have detrusor overactivity with no disruption in detrusor-sphincter coordination. Patients w

Neurophysiology and neuroanatomy of reflexive and voluntary saccades in non-human primates.

A multitude of cognitive functions can easily be tested by a number of relatively simple saccadic eye movement tasks. This approach has been employed extensively with patient populations to investigate the functional deficits associated with psychiatric disorders. Neurophysiological studies in non-human primates performing the same tasks have begun to provide us with insights into the neural mechanisms underlying many cognitive functions. Here, we review studies that have investigated single neuron activity in the superior colliculus (see glossary), frontal eye field, supplementary eye field,

Functional MRI, DTI and neurophysiology in horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis.

INTRODUCTION: Horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis (HGPPS) is an autosomal recessive disease due to a mutation in the ROBO3 gene … in the eye-movement network. CONCLUSION: Motor fMRI confirmed the established findings of DTI and neurophysiology in the same patient. In suspected HGPPS, any technique appears appropriate for further investigation. Auditory fMRI suggests that a monaural auditory system with bilateral auditory activations might be a physiological advantage as compared to a bina …

Botulinum toxin in motor disorders: practical considerations with emphasis on interventional neurophysiology.

After a brief review of the pharmacological properties of the botulinum toxin (BT), its mechanism of action on the nerve endings of the neuromuscular junctions, and the general therapeutic principles and adverse side effects, we discuss the advantages of interventional neurophysiology for the treatment of focal motor disorders by means of botulinum toxin A (BTA) muscle infiltration. Electromyography (EMG) provides a valuable objective information in the diagnosis of many motor disturbances and enables the precise identification of the muscles that contribute to the abnormal movement or posture…

[Preliminary treatment of congenital hip dislocation using physical therapy based on neurophysiology].

Adductor tightness is a typical symptom in CDH. In cases of subluxation and complete dislocation even a rigid abduction contracture can occur, preventing reduction and favouring redislocation. The contracture of the hip joint is the result of neurophysiological disorders, which can be treated by an exercise program on a neurophysiological basis. 62 children with 73 severely contracted and 5 hypotonic hip dislocations have been treated by the so-called "Vojta-program" before reduction. In a prospective study over 5 years this kind of treatment has been very successful: the incidence of necrosis

Neurophysiology and pharmacology of long-term potentiation in the rat sympathetic ganglion.

Brief tetanic stimulation of the preganglionic nerve induced a persistent potentiation of nicotinic synaptic transmission in the rat superior cervical sympathetic ganglion. Quantitative measurements of the post-tetanic increase in synaptic efficacy revealed two distinct time courses. The early, rapidly decaying component, termed post-tetanic potentiation (p.t.p.), had a decay time constant of 2-3 min, as reported elsewhere. The duration of the more persistent component, called long-term potentiation (l.t.p.), was extremely temperature dependent, lasting much longer at 32 degrees C than at 22 d

Psychophysics and neurophysiology of repetition noise processing in a vertebrate auditory system.

The psychophysics and neurophysiology of repetition noise (RN) processing was studied in the goldfish. RN is the sum of a noise waveform with its delayed (by T s) repetition, which may be attenuated (by A dB), and inverted relative to the undelayed signal. Such a signal has a periodic spectrum with peaks separated by 1/T Hz, and a prominence in its autocorrelation function at T s. In usual environments, RN contains information about sound-reflecting surfaces. Delays in the range of 0.5-20 ms create pitch sensations in man. Psychophysical experiments using classical respiratory conditioning inv…

Neurophysiological trajectories in Alzheimer's disease progression.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β and misfolded tau proteins causing synaptic dysfunction, and progressive neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. Altered neural oscillations have been consistently demonstrated in AD. However, the trajectories of abnormal neural oscillations in AD progression and their relationship to neurodegeneration and cognitive decline are unknown. Here, we deployed robust event-based sequencing models (EBMs) to investigate the trajectories of long-range and local neural synchrony across AD stages, estimated from resting-state mag
