Dural melanoma associated with ocular melanosis and multiple blue nevi.

BACKGROUND: Primary meningeal melanomas of the central nervous system (CNS) are a rare malignant process with the majority originating from the leptomeninges. Primary dural melanomas have been reported to occur in isolation or in conjunction with Nevus of Ota. The association of primary dural melanoma with multiple cutaneous blue nevi has not been reported previously. OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of a 41-year-old Asian woman patient with a primary dural melanoma that arose in association with ocular melanosis and multiple cutaneous blue nevi. The patient is alive almost more than 8 years aft

Nevus with cyst. A report of 93 cases.

Nevus with cyst is characterized by a melanocytic nevus that is closely associated anatomically with an epidermoid cyst. We describe the clinicopathologic manifestations of 93 cases (from 92 individuals) observed during a 6-year period and review the features of the 69 previously reported nevi with cysts in the world literature. It is important for both clinicians and pathologists to recognize this common benign condition because growth of these lesions is frequently misinterpreted by the patient as representing either a new melanoma or malignant transformation of a preexisting lesion. Variant

Nevus of Ota associated with a primary uveal melanoma and intracranial melanoma metastasis.

Nevus of Ota is a blue, hyperpigmented, benign dermatosis of the skin and mucosae that most often occurs unilaterally in the distribution of the ophthalmic (V1) and maxillary (V2) branches of the trigeminal nerve. Although uncommon, association with malignant melanoma is a complication that must be considered in the evaluation of patients with nevus of Ota. Mutations in the GNAQ and BAP1 genes in patients with nevus of Ota place them at higher risk for malignant melanoma and metastasis. We report the case of a 29-year-old woman with a long-standing history of nevus of Ota who presented acutely

Agminated Halo Nevus: A Novel Presentation.

Halo nevus is a benign type of melanocytic nevi commonly found in children and manifests as a central pigmented part surrounded by a well-defined hypopigmented area. Halo nevi are commonly located on the trunk. The central nevus may show partial or complete regression, whereas the associated halo may persist or enlarge. The term 'agminated nevus' refers to a cluster of melanocytic nevi restricted to an area of the body and commonly reported with acquired melanocytic nevi, blue nevi, and Spitz nevi. To the best of our knowledge, agminated halo nevus has not been previously described. We hereby

Congenital Dermal Melanocytosis on the Foot: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Dermal melanocytosis is a common pigmented skin disease, characterized by an increased number of ectopic melanocytes in the dermis. Rare variants of dermal melanocytosis that do not belong to these four typical groups-nevus of Ota, nevus of Ito, blue nevus, and Mongolian spots-are called dermal melanocyte hamartoma, or congenital dermal melanocytosis (CDM) as it mostly appears from birth. We report a case of CDM on the foot of a young woman with a literature review of previously reported cases of CDM.

Clinically distinct form of acquired dermal melanocytosis with review of published work.

Dermal melanocytosis is most commonly found in the skin of Asians and other darkly pigmented people. It is histologically characterized by the presence of dermal melanocytes, with or without presence of dermal melanophages. Mongolian spot, nevus of Ito, nevus of Ota, nevus of Hori, and blue nevus are most common and represent distinct types of dermal melanocytosis. Other clinical patterns of acquired dermal melanocytosis have also been described. Herein, we report a unique case of acquired dermal melanocytosis diffusely affecting the entire back of a 50-year old African-American male and also

Combined nevi of the oral mucosa.

Pigmented nevi are uncommon oral lesions. We report the clinical and microscopic features of three cases of combined nevus, characterized by the association of an intramucosal nevus and a common blue nevus. Two cases were clinically suspected to be melanoma. The lesions were located on the maxillary gingiva, the mandibular gingiva, and the mucosa of the left posterior portion of the hard palate. Combined nevi of the skin vary considerably in histologic appearance. The microscopic findings demonstrated by oral combined nevi also appear to exhibit substantial histologic variation. The oral combi

Comprehensive Clinical, Histopathologic, and Molecular Analysis and Long-term Follow-up of Patients With Nodal Blue Nevi.

Blue nevi are benign, melanocytic neoplasms that show a range of clinical and morphologic patterns and include common/dendritic, cellular, and atypical cellular subtypes. Like other nevi, they most commonly occur in skin but can occasionally involve lymph nodes where they may be misinterpreted as representing metastatic melanoma. Moreover, whether benign blue nevi can metastasize to lymph nodes and their natural history and prognostic significance has been the subject of great controversy. To date, few cases of nodal blue nevi have been reported in the literature, and those reports have had li

Loss of dimethylated H3K27 (H3K27me2) expression is not a specific marker of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST): An immunohistochemical study of 137 cases, with emphasis on MPNST and melanocytic tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Loss-of-function mutations in EED and SUZ12, core components of the polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2), occur in >90% of sporadic and radiation-associated malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) and in roughly 70% of NF1-related tumors. PRC2 inactivation results in loss of H3K27me3 expression and aberrant downstream transcription. H3K27me3 expression is lost in 40-90% of spindle cell MPNST but is not specific. A single study has suggested that dimethylated H3K27 (H3K27me2) is a more specific marker of MPNST. METHODS: We compared the expression of H3K27me3 and H3K27me2

LEF1 expression in melanocytic tumors cannot accurately predict CTNNB1 mutational status acting as a potential pitfall in bi-phenotypic lesions.

BACKGROUND: Most melanocytic lesions develop along a genetic continuum progressing from a nevus to melanoma. Melanocytomas represent an intermediate category of tumors that lie within that spectrum harboring additional genetic alterations that may affect their phenotype. WHO currently recognizes three melanocytoma categories: Pigmented Epithelioid Melanocytomas (PEMs), BAP1-inactivated Melanocytomas (BIMs) and WNT-activated deep penetrating/plexiform melanocytomas (naevus) (WNT-activated DPMNs). Among them, WNT-activated DPMNs represent an underrecognized entity often misinterpreted as other b

Nodal melanocytic nevus with balloon-cell change (nodal balloon-cell nevus).

Most nodal nevi are intracapsular and present the morphology of conventional nevi; less frequently, they show the appearance of common and cellular blue nevi. We report a case of an nodal capsular, trabecular and intraparenchymal melanocytic nevus with balloon-cell change in a patient with a malignant melanoma which arose in a pre-existing cutaneous giant congenital nevus, showing balloon-cell degeneration.

Integrated Genomic Classification of Melanocytic Tumors of the Central Nervous System Using Mutation Analysis, Copy Number Alterations, and DNA Methylation Profiling.

Purpose: In the central nervous system, distinguishing primary leptomeningeal melanocytic tumors from melanoma metastases and predicting their biological behavior solely using histopathologic criteria may be challenging. We aimed to assess the diagnostic and prognostic value of integrated molecular analysis.Experimental Design: Targeted next-generation sequencing, array-based genome-wide methylation analysis, and BAP1 IHC were performed on the largest cohort of central nervous system melanocytic tumors analyzed to date, including 47 primary tumors of the central nervous system, 16 uveal melano

Co-occurrence of posterior chest wall pilonidal sinus with melanocytic nevus: a challenging presentation: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: To date, only a limited number of case reports have documented the co-occurrence of PNS and melanocytic nevus in the medical literature. This study aims to report an exceptionally rare case of posterior chest wall PNS in conjunction with a melanocytic nevus. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old female presented with a long-standing black lesion on her left upper posterior chest wall, that had become painful in the two months prior to presentation. There was a painful, dark blue, non-erythematous, and non-tender nodule on the left upper posterior chest wall. Based on the patient's de

Intracranial meningeal melanocytoma associated with ipsilateral nevus of Ota. Case report.

In this report, the authors review the case of a man with a neurocutaneous syndrome. He presented with an intracerebral melanocytoma associated with a blue nevus of the scalp; its location and its appearance during childhood supported the diagnosis of a nevus of Ota. Meningeal melanocytomas are increasingly being diagnosed, but remain rare. Primary meningeal malignant melanoma is the first differential diagnosis to eliminate. Despite their common embryonic origin. the association of a melanocytoma with a nevus of Ota is rare. A nevus of Ota exhibits the same melanocytic proliferation and affec

Unilateral open-angle glaucoma associated with the ipsilateral nevus of ota.

The nevus of Ota also known as "congenital melanosis bulbi" and "oculodermal melanocytosis" is a blue-gray hyperpigmentation that occurs on the face and eyes. The sclera is involved in two-thirds of cases (causing an increased risk of glaucoma). Women are nearly five times more likely to be affected than men. It is rare among Caucasian people. The nevus of Ota is congenital or acquired. Most cases of the nevus of Ota are unilateral (90%), although pigmentation is present bilaterally in 5%-10%. Ocular abnormalities included pigmentation of the sclera, cornea, retina, and optic disc and cavernou

Nevus of Ota and leptomeningeal melanocytic lesions.

Two patients with congenital nevus of Ota developed intracranial malignant melanocytic tumors. One had a localized tumor that resembled a melanocytoma, but the other had a more highly malignant tumor that diffusely seeded the leptomeninges. There are 10 prior cases in the world literature. These cases are contrasted with the other disorders in which melanotic skin lesions are associated with CNS melanocytic tumors, including neurocutaneous melanosis, cellular blue nevus, and metastatic malignant melanoma. Each disorder tends to involve particular sites of the CNS. The nevus of Ota can be consi

Improved discrimination of melanotic schwannoma from melanocytic lesions by combined morphological and GNAQ mutational analysis.

The histological differential diagnosis between melanotic schwannoma, primary leptomeningeal melanocytic lesions and cellular blue nevus can be challenging. Correct diagnosis of melanotic schwannoma is important to select patients who need clinical evaluation for possible association with Carney complex. Recently, we described the presence of activating codon 209 mutations in the GNAQ gene in primary leptomeningeal melanocytic lesions. Identical codon 209 mutations have been described in blue nevi. The aims of the present study were to (1) perform a histological review of a series of lesions (

Congenital combined melanocytic nevus of the scalp with associated alopecia areata.

We report a case of a 20-year-old Chinese man with an alopecic congenital combined compound and blue melanocytic nevus of the scalp, associated with alopecia areata. The diagnosis of a combined melanocytic nevus was confirmed by histopathological examination and immunohistochemical stains, with exclusion of neurocristic hamartoma, which can have a similar clinical and histopathological appearance but different prognosis. In addition, we explore the association of this large melanocytic lesion with alopecia areata.
