Haemodynamic changes with the administration of nitrous oxide during coronary artery surgery.

Haemodynamic responses to 50% nitrous oxide in oxygen during coronary artery surgery were investigated in 10 patients. Morphine, diazepam and pancuronium were given intravenously as both induction and maintenance anaesthesia. A significant decrease was seen in heart rate, arterial pressure, pulmonary artery pressure, heart rate-systolic arterial pressure product, peripheral vascular resistance, left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, dP/dT of the left ventricle and resistance as measured in the graft to the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD). No variations occurred in cardiac outp…

Effect of the chronic administration of nitrous oxide 0.5% to gravid rats.

Twenty-four gravid Wistar rats (12 experimental and 12 control) were studied. From day 1 to day 19 of gestation the experimental group was exposed day and night to nitrous oxide 0.5%, while the control group was exposed to air. On day 19 the rats were killed and a detailed examination of the uterus, ovaries and fetuses was undertaken. The fetuses were fixed, cleared and stained with alizarin red, examined for skeletal anomalies and their crown-rump lengths measured. There was a significant decrease in litter size of the dams exposed to nitrous oxide as compared with control (P less than 0.001)…

Hemodynamic responses to low doses of naloxone after narcotic-nitrous oxide anesthesia.

Hemodynamic responses to reversal of phenoperidine-nitrous oxide anesthesia were studied in 14 adult patients before and after naloxone administration (1.5 +/- 0.25 microgram/kg), and, at comparable intervals, in 11 control patients who were permitted to resume respiration spontaneously. Naloxone reversal resulted in significant increases in heart rate (31%), cardiac index (50%), left ventricular stroke work index (53%), and systemic blood pressure (21%), compared with initial values. The heart rate-systolic arterial pressure product, an indirect index of myocardial oxygen consumption, increas…

[Comparative evaluation of mask and intratracheal anesthesia with fluothane and nitrous oxide].

Under examination were 119 patients with mitral stenosis, stage III, in whom mask and endotracheal narcosis with 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 volume per cent of fluothane in combination with 50% nitrogen monoxide was accomplished. As a result of studies, it was found that with the same concentrations of anesthetics in the inhaled mixture the depth of anesthesia according to EEG findings was greater in endotracheal than in mask anesthesia. Mask anesthesia was associated with more pronounced pathophysiological shifts than endotracheal one. In endotracheal narcosis with an artificial ventilation of the lung

[Changes in cerebrospinal fluid pressure in nitrous oxide anesthesia in neurosurgical patients].

By employing continual electromamometry of the cerebrospinal fluid and central venous pressures the influence of nitrous oxide on the CSE pressure was studied in neurosurgical patients operated upon following pneumoencephalography. In patients treated surgically without any preliminary pneumoencephalographic investigation the normo- and hypocapnic artificial ventilation of the lungs with a N2O and O2 mixture produced a significant drop of the CSF pressure. A nitrous oxide anesthesia applied to the patients operated on after pneumoencephalography was accompanied by a marked rise of the cerebros…

Optic Neuropathy Associated with Recreational Abuse of Nitrous Oxide: A Retrospective Case Series.

Background/Objectives: Nitrous oxide is known to cause neurological damage. We investigated the potential effects of nitrous oxide (N2O) abuse on the optic nerve through comprehensive ophthalmological evaluation of patients diagnosed with N2O-related neurological disorders. Methods: This retrospective, monocentric case series included patients hospitalized for N2O-related neurological manifestations in the neurology department of a French tertiary care center. Suspected optic neuropathy was defined as abnormal retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness according t…

Nitrous Oxide for Pain Management in Office Hysteroscopy: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To assess pain during office operative hysteroscopy with or without inhaled nitrous oxide (N 2 O). METHODS: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted at a single university-affiliated tertiary care hospital. Women undergoing office operative hysteroscopy were randomized in 1:1 ratio to receive either inhaled N 2 O or ambient air through a self-administered face mask. Pain was assessed using a 10-point visual analog scale at three timepoints: uterine entry, during the procedure, and postprocedure. RESULTS: Between July and November 2025, a tota…

Arterial and Venous Thrombotic Complications Following Recreational Nitrous Oxide Misuse: A Comprehensive Review.

Recreational nitrous oxide (N2O) misuse has increased markedly over the past decade, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Although neurological toxicity is well established, venous and arterial thrombotic events remain underrecognized in cardiovascular practice. A comprehensive review of the literature was performed by searching PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Google Scholar from inception to January 2026, using combinations of "nitrous oxide," "thrombosis," "pulmonary embolism," "deep vein thrombosis," "stroke," "myocardial infarction," "aortic thrombus," and "homocysteine." All case …

Neurotoxicity Linked to Nitrous Oxide (Galaxy Gas) Recreation: An Overview of Clinical Evidence.

Nitrous oxide (N2O), known as laughing gas, is a colorless, low-volume gas that has become commonly used in busy maternity wards, emergency rooms, and dental offices. It provides an introduction to the principles and practices of anesthesia, sedation, and analgesia. This review examines the recreational use and prolonged exposure to nitrous oxide (N2O), both of which are associated with neurological, psychiatric, and cardiovascular complications. A comprehensive search was conducted in databases including Medline, PubMed, PMC, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus, with additional referen…

Chronic Nitrous Oxide Exposure Disrupts Metabolism in Mice: A Plasma Untargeted Metabolomics Study.

BACKGROUND: Nitrous oxide (N2O) is increasingly used as a recreational drug, leading to neurological and systemic toxicities. However, due to the rapid elimination and minimal alteration of nitrogen oxides, the short direct detection window complicates the assessment of N2O exposure. METHOD: In this study, we investigated the effects of chronic N2O exposure on plasma metabolites using an untargeted metabolomics approach in a mouse model. C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 90,000 ppm N2O (1 h, twice daily for 28 days) or room air. Plasma samples were analyzed via UHPLC -Triple TOF -MS. Orthogonal pa…

pH-dependent microbial responses drive nitrous oxide mitigation by the nitrification inhibitor DMPP.

Nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from agricultural soils are a major environmental concern, largely driven by microbial nitrogen (N) transformations following fertilizer application. Nitrification inhibitors such as 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) offer a promising strategy to mitigate these emissions, though their effectiveness is highly context-dependent. We conducted a laboratory microcosm experiment using four Cypriot soils spanning acidic to near-neutral pH to compare N₂O emissions, inorganic N dynamics, and N-cycling microbial communities under three treatments: (i) untreated soil (co…

Nitrous oxide induced subacute combined degeneration of the spine cord: A case report.

RATIONALE: In recent years, recreational use of inhaled nitrous oxide (N2O) is on the increase among young people, accompanied by a corresponding rise in reports about its toxicity. Subacute combined degeneration of the spine cord (SCD) is the typical clinical picture of the nervous system disorder caused by N2O intoxication, as a result of metabolic disturbance of vitamin B12. PATIENT CONCERNS, DIAGNOSES, INTERVENTIONS AND OUTCOMES: We report a 28-year-old female of SCD due to prolonged use of N2O, presented with paresthesia and unsteady in walking progressing within 1 month. Symptoms gradua…

Clinical signs of nitrous oxide use: case report and review of the literature.

Nitrous oxide is used medically as an anesthetic agent; in the food industry as a propellant for condiments; and recreationally for its euphoric and dissociative effects. We report three cases of nitrous oxide misuse causing severe, symptomatic cobalamin (vitamin B12) deficiency in which signs of nitrous oxide use per se, as well as signs of toxicity, were observed, including characteristic palmar calluses over the metacarpal heads, and frostbite. These signs may assist clinicians in the recognition of nitrous oxide use and the timely diagnosis of nitrous oxide toxicity.
