Interplay Between Peripheral and Central Inflammation in Autism Spectrum Disorders: Possible Nutritional and Therapeutic Strategies.

Pre- and post-natal factors can affect brain development and function, impacting health outcomes with particular relevance to neurodevelopmental diseases, such as autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Maternal obesity and its associated complications have been related to the increased risk of ASDs in offspring. Indeed, animals exposed to maternal obesity or high fat diets are prone to social communication impairment and repetitive behavior, the hallmarks of autism. During development, fatty acids and sugars, as well as satiety hormones, like insulin and leptin, and inflammatory factors related to

Evaluation of the mRNA and Protein Expressions of Nutritional Biomarkers in the Gastrointestinal Mucosa of Patients with Small Intestinal Disorders.

Objective The objectives of this study were to investigate the mRNA and protein expression of biomarkers related to absorption in the small intestinal mucosa of humans and determine the relationships between small intestinal diseases and nutrition. Methods The study subjects consisted of patients scheduled to undergo double-balloon endoscopy (DBE) or total colonoscopy for suspected gastrointestinal disorder in a clinical practice. Biopsies were taken from apparently normal mucosa in the visible areas of 6 parts of the intestines from the duodenum to the colon. The mRNA expression of specific b

The plausibility of maternal toxicant exposure and nutritional status as contributing factors to the risk of autism spectrum disorders.

UNLABELLED: Recent research suggests the maternal environment may be especially important for the risk of developing autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In particular maternal infections, micronutrient deficiencies, obesity, and toxicant exposures are likely to interact with genetic risk factors to disrupt fetal brain development. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this paper is to investigate the plausibility of maternal toxicant exposure and nutritional status as causal factors in the development of ASD. METHODS: This paper reviews current research investigating the hypothesis that maternal toxicant exp

Diet choice in weight-restored patients with eating disorders; progressive autonomy process by nutritional education.

INTRODUCTION: Human eating behaviour is regulated by multiple factors. Anorexia nervosa patients show a restrictive eating pattern while bulimia nervosa patients present bingeing-purging episodes. Although treatments are specially successful in the normalization of body composition, maladaptive eating behaviours tend to persist being a risk factor for relapse and recurrence. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to assess the quality of the nutritional choice of eating disorders patients after a year of nutritional education and to assess improvements in choice capacity. METHODS: Thirty-one o

The interrelationship of thyroid hormones with vitamin A and zinc nutritional status in patients with chronic hepatic and gastrointestinal disorders.

To define the role of vitamin A, retinol binding protein, and zinc deficiency in producing the thyroid hormone abnormalities found in chronic illness, we studied 62 clinically stable patients with hepatic and gastrointestinal disorders. Serum triiodothyronine (T3) and free T3 index (FT3I) were depressed compared to controls (p less than 0.05) in the patients. Retinol binding protein and prealbumin levels correlated with both T3 and FT3I (p less than 0.01), whereas vitamin A levels did not. Vitamin A therapy in patients with documented vitamin A deficiency produced an increase in T3, thyroxine

Diet and nutrition in patients with neuromuscular disorders, as lifestyle factors affecting clinical parameters and quality of life: a narrative systematic review.

Neuromuscular disorders (NMDs) are a heterogeneous group of conditions characterised by progressive muscle weakness, motor impairment, and risk of malnutrition, affecting the quality of life (QoL) of patients. While pharmacological treatments are essential for the management of symptoms, the role of diet, nutrition, and other lifestyle factors remains underexplored. This narrative systematic review, performed on PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus following PRISMA guidelines, aimed to investigate the relationship between lifestyle, the progression of NMDs, and the QoL. A total of 30 studies (n

Sleep-related disorders and thyroid gland: Results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007 to 2012 and Mendelian randomization analyses.

Common sleep problems reduce quality of life and increase chronic disease risk. The relationship between sleep-related disorders and thyroid function is unclear. This study examines the relationship between sleep-related disorders and thyroid disease using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data and Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Data from NHANES 2007 to 2012 were used to assess the relationship between sleep-related disorders and thyroid function using weighted multivariable-adjusted logistic regression. A two-sample MR study was conducted using genome-wide

Research priorities to reduce the impact of musculoskeletal disorders: a priority setting exercise with the child health and nutrition research initiative method.

Involving research users in setting priorities for research is essential to ensure the outcomes are patient-centred and maximise its value and impact. The Musculoskeletal Disorders Research Advisory Group Versus Arthritis led a research priority setting exercise across musculoskeletal disorders. The Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative (CHNRI) method of setting research priorities with a range of stakeholders was used, involving four stages and two surveys, to: (1) gather research uncertainties, (2) consolidate these, (3) score uncertainties against importance and impact, and (4) ana

[Polyunsaturated phosphatidylcholine combined with vitamin B complex in the treatment of patients with disorders of the hepatobiliary function caused by unbalanced nutrition].

The above study was undertaken in order to assess the therapeutic activity of polyunsaturated phosphatidylcholine combined with vitamin B complex in 20 patients suffering from hepatobiliary disorders related to unbalanced diets with inappropriate caloric and/or macronutrient intake (another group of 20 subjects served as controls). The results obtained show that the combination used is apt to bring about desirable changes in the liver function parameters studied. These favorable changes are likely to be attributable to a reduction of damage to membranes and of changes in liver phospholipid syn

Altered host-gut microbes symbiosis in severely malnourished anorexia nervosa (AN) patients undergoing enteral nutrition: An explicative factor of functional intestinal disorders?

BACKGROUND: Functional intestinal disorders (FIDs) are frequently observed in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). Relationship between FIDs and a potential gut microbiota dysbiosis has been poorly explored. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine an association between FIDs severity and dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiota in a severely malnourished patient population with AN undergoing enteral nutrition. DESIGN: Faecal microbiota of AN (DSM IVr criteria) female inpatients were collected and compared to healthy controls based on 16S rRNA profiling. The severity of FIDs was evaluated in patients

[MedPlate Method™ ‒ A visual approach to nutritional education in eating disorders based on the mediterranean dietary pattern].

Family-based therapy is the main evidence-based outpatient treatment for children and adolescents with eating disorders. In this context, nutritional education and family guidance can be carried out using different strategies, including calorie counting, exchange lists, and visual models and resources such as the Plate-by-Plate Approach®. The objectives of this study were to develop a visual resource adapted to the Mediterranean diet pattern and the eating and gastronomic habits of Spain, and to evaluate the energy and macro- and micronutrient contribution, as well as the methodology's nutriti

Association between the prognostic nutritional index and impulse control disorders in patients with early-stage Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) and associated with significant psychiatric morbidity and reduced quality of life. The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) reflects both nutritional and immune status. However, the relationship between PNI and ICDs in early-stage PD remains unknown. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1,302 early-stage PD patients (Hoehn and Yahr stages 1-3) from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) database. Logistic regression models were constructed with sequential adjustment for

Philippine Clinical Practice Guidelines for Periodic Health Examination: Screening for Renal, Metabolic, Nutritional, and Endocrine Disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Renal, metabolic, nutritional, and endocrine disorders significantly affect Filipinos due to the resulting mortality, cardiovascular outcomes, and negative impact on quality of life. Screening for these disorders may lead to earlier detection and management of the disease, with subsequent improvement of clinical outcomes if early therapeutic options are available. This must be balanced with potential harms resulting from mislabeling and the adverse effects of treatment. The objective of this clinical practice guideline (CPG) is to provide recommendations to optimize p

[Benefits of using a recommended testing algorithm for the diagnosis and dietary-nutritional management of patients with chronic gastrointestinal disorders].

Introduction and objective: chronic gastrointestinal disorders such as celiac disease and lactose or fructose intolerance in adulthood are becoming more frequent and are usually accompanied by symptoms that affect daily activities and greatly limit diet. The spectrum of symptoms manifested by those affected is heterogeneous and not very specific; in addition, there is no standardized and agreed protocol for dietary management, which makes a correct diagnosis and effective treatment difficult. Disorders related to malabsorption/food intolerance can originate from primary (genetic) or secondary
