A content analysis of online videos containing dietary recommendations for gout and their alignment with evidence-based dietary guidelines.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the alignment of YouTube® videos providing dietary recommendations for gout with evidence-based guidelines targeted at the United Kingdom (UK) population and to establish their quality. DESIGN: A content analysis of YouTube® videos providing dietary recommendations for gout was undertaken. Videos were categorised by video source. Each video's dietary recommendations for gout were compared with three evidence-based guidelines for gout, producing a compliance score. Presence of non-guideline advice was assessed. Understandability and actionability were evaluated using the P

Using national dietary intake data to evaluate and adapt the US Diet History Questionnaire: the stepwise tailoring of an FFQ for Canadian use.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the Canadian Diet History Questionnaire I (C-DHQ I) food list and to adapt the US DHQ II for Canada using Canadian dietary survey data. DESIGN: Twenty-four-hour dietary recalls reported by adults in a national Canadian survey were analysed to create a food list corresponding to C-DHQ I food questions. The percentage contribution of the food list to the total survey intake of seventeen nutrients was used as the criterion to evaluate the suitability of the C-DHQ I to capture food intake in Canadian populations. The data were also analysed to identify foods and to modify p

Vitamin D in health and disease.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Investigations have revealed that vitamin D plays an important role in many areas of health and disease. Questions over whether sun avoidance and sunscreen use will decrease vitamin D levels may concern clinicians when counseling patients at risk for vitamin D insufficiency. A review of the role of vitamin D in health and disease, the impact of photoprotection and skin type on vitamin D levels, and recommendations for adequate vitamin D intake is provided to aid clinicians in counseling patients regarding these issues. RESULTS: Review of the literature indicates that adequ

Increasing Access and Availability of Nutrient-Dense Foods at United States Marine Corps Food Venues Is Feasible and Profitable.

Background/Objectives: Military Service Members (SMs) require optimal nutrition to support health, readiness, and job performance. However, they often fall short of meeting nutrition guidelines. This study aimed to determine the impact and feasibility of implementing the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) "Fueled to Fight®" (F2F) nutrition program in non-appropriated fund (NAF) food venues. Objectives included evaluating changes in Military Nutrition Environment Assessment Tool (mNEAT) scores, feasibility of implementing and maintaining F2F strategies, and influence on customer purchasing patterns. The new nutrition science project.

OBJECTIVE: To show that nutrition science, with its application to food and nutrition policy, now needs a new conceptual framework. This will incorporate nutrition in its current definition as principally a biological science, now including nutritional aspects of genomics. It will also create new governing and guiding principles; specify a new definition; and add social and environmental dimensions and domains. METHOD: A narrative review of nutrition science, its successes and achievements, and its dilemmas, paradoxes, shortcomings, dissonances and challenges. Reference is made to 16 associat…

Vitamin C and human health--a review of recent data relevant to human requirements.

The recent scientific literature indicates that beyond merely protecting against scurvy vitamin C contributes to many aspects of human health. The main areas of research reviewed include: 1. Vitamin C requirements of smokers. The data indicate that the vitamin C requirement of smokers is higher by at least 60 mg per day (up to 140 mg per day) than that of nonsmokers. 2. Important functions of the body, such as immune response, pulmonary function, and iron absorption are related to vitamin C intakes. Daily vitamin C intake of at least 150-200 mg per day enhance these functions. 3. Vitamin C may

Views of people with disordered eating on current and alternative out-of-home calorie labelling policies in England: a mixed-methods survey.

INTRODUCTION: Out-of-home calorie labelling was introduced in England as part of public health policy to address obesity. We examined the acceptability and perceived impacts of the policy on individuals with disordered eating. Additionally, potential alternative nutritional label policies were explored. We hypothesised that individuals with binge eating would view the policy more favourably compared with individuals without binge eating. METHODS: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study was conducted from February 2024 to March 2025. Inclusion criteria were age ≥16 years, living in England and h

United Kingdom artificial nutrition database: The changing landscape of adult home parenteral support.

BACKGROUND: The United Kingdom nutrition database monitors the changing landscape of adult home parenteral nutrition support (HPS) to inform clinicians and policy makers of the need for this life-saving treatment. METHODS: The UK database is administered by the British Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. Data for home parenteral nutrition (HPN) has been collected since 2005 and home intravenous fluids (HIVFs) since 2011. During this study the reporting of data to the database by healthcare workers has been voluntary. Data were analyzed using linear regression. RESULTS: A threef

Epigenetics: Linking Early Postnatal Nutrition to Obesity Programming?

Despite constant research and public policy efforts, the obesity epidemic continues to be a major public health threat, and new approaches are urgently needed. It has been shown that nutrient imbalance in early life, from conception to infancy, influences later obesity risk, suggesting that obesity could result from "developmental programming". In this review, we evaluate the possibility that early postnatal nutrition programs obesity risk via epigenetic mechanisms, especially DNA methylation, focusing on four main topics: (1) the dynamics of epigenetic processes in key metabolic organs during

[Nutritional problems in old age].

Nutritional problems in the elderly are complex and individually diverse, and therefore a differentiated approach ist mandatory. Interactions of social, psychological and biological factors in the nutrition of the elderly are discussed in four clinical cases: problems of procurement and preparation of food in a patient with sensory aphasia and mild organic brain syndrome; problems of food intake and mastication in a patient with stroke; problems surrounding nutritional requirements and absorption of nutrients in a patient with osteoporosis, and problems relating to nutritional components in a

Tackling the social determinants of childhood obesity in the United States: policy brief and lessons for developed and emerging economies.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity has surged dramatically in the United States over the past three decades, with over 30% of children now classified as overweight or obese. This rising trend presents a major public health and economic challenge, with obesity-related costs rising from just over 1% of United States gross domestic product in 2005 to 3.3% in 2019 and projected to reach 4.6% by 2060 if left unaddressed. ANALYSIS: While conventional narratives often attribute obesity to poor individual choices, this policy brief highlights the broader social determinants that shape childhood obesity ac

[Scientific production in nutrition and the public perception of hunger and eating in Brazil].

There is a contradiction between the perceptions held by different sectors of the Establishment with regard to the questions of hunger and nutrition in Brazil. On the one hand, the flagship of the present Brazilian government's social policy is the "Fome Zero" program. This program is based on the notion that the condition of hunger is socially relevant in this country. On the other hand, the scientific community in the field of nutrition has, through epidemiological studies, highlighted obesity as one of the most serious public health problems in Brazil. The reason why the public perception i

Inventory on the dietary assessment tools available and needed in africa: a prerequisite for setting up a common methodological research infrastructure for nutritional surveillance, research, and prevention of diet-related non-communicable diseases.

OBJECTIVE: To carry out an inventory on the availability, challenges, and needs of dietary assessment (DA) methods in Africa as a pre-requisite to provide evidence, and set directions (strategies) for implementing common dietary methods and support web-research infrastructure across countries. METHODS: The inventory was performed within the framework of the "Africa's Study on Physical Activity and Dietary Assessment Methods" (AS-PADAM) project. It involves international institutional and African networks. An inventory questionnaire was developed and disseminated through the networks. Eighteen

From Policy to Plate: Implications of 2025 U.S. Federal Policy Changes on School Meals.

School meals are a cornerstone of the United States' nutrition safety net for children from low-income families, providing nearly 30 million lunches daily. However, recent U.S. policy actions may limit access to school meals for children who need them most. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act changed eligibility requirements to limit participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid. School-age children enrolled in SNAP and Medicaid are automatically enrolled in school meal programs. Limiting participation in SNAP and Medicaid has the potential to significantly impa

Eating behaviours, prevalence of obesity & health policies.

Obesity prevalence is increasing, particularly in developing nations. To contain these trends, several countries implemented preventive measures such as taxation of food items and/or front-of-pack labels. An ecological cross-country observational study was conducted, using publicly available data (GBD, WHO-GHO) on 20 European and Latin American countries, to explore changes around the year of policy in the consumption of foods/nutrients considered "Работает" or "Требует внимания" and in the obesity prevalence across age groups. Food/nutrient consumption trends did not show a consistent pattern accordi

Recommendations for fluoride limits in drinking water based on estimated daily fluoride intake in the Upper East Region, Ghana.

Both dental and skeletal fluorosis caused by high fluoride intake are serious public health concerns around the world. Fluorosis is particularly pronounced in developing countries where elevated concentrations of naturally occurring fluoride are present in the drinking water, which is the primary route of exposure. The World Health Organization recommended limit of fluoride in drinking water is 1.5 mg F(-) L(-1), which is also the upper limit for fluoride in drinking water for several other countries such as Canada, China, India, Australia, and the European Union. In the United States the enfo

Diet quality of Japanese preschool children assessed by the Healthy Eating Index-2020: Nutrient and food group intake, as well as weekday-weekend differences.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In Japan, there are no official dietary guidelines for young children and nutrients may be insufficient on weekends, compared to weekdays at nursery schools. To ensure adequate nutrition, an appropriate dietary evaluation method is required. This study used the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2020, which is based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, to evaluate the diet quality of Japanese children, examine its validity through associations with nutrient and food group intake, and compare dietary characteristics on weekdays and weekends. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: The

Repositioning oral health within DOHaD: linking early childhood caries to life-course NCD prevention.

The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) paradigm has transformed our understanding of how early-life biological and social environments shape lifelong health trajectories. While DOHaD research across Oceania has focused primarily on metabolic, cardiovascular, and nutritional outcomes, oral health, particularly early childhood caries (ECC), remains largely absent from life course research and policy despite its early onset, shared risk factors with childhood obesity and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), and strong social and intergenerational patterning. This conceptual pap
