Improving the quality of workers' compensation health care delivery: the Washington State Occupational Health Services Project.

This article has summarized research and policy activities undertaken in Washington State over the past several years to identify the key problems that result in poor quality and excessive disability among injured workers, and the types of system and delivery changes that could best address these problems in order to improve the quality of occupational health care provided through the workers' compensation system. Our investigations have consistently pointed to the lack of coordination and integration of occupational health services as having major adverse effects on quality and health outcome…

Hepatitis A among health workers in Paris hospitals. Occupational Health Physicians of Paris Hospital (AP-HP).

To design a vaccination strategy against hepatitis A among hospital employees, we carried out a serological survey of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection in 10 university hospitals in the Paris area. Subjects under 60 years of age were consecutively enrolled by occupational health services and tested for IgG to HAV by ELISA. Of the 1,516 subjects recruited, 926 were health workers (HW), 322 clerks, and 268 cooks or kitchen employees. Among HW and clerks the HAV seroprevalence was 53.8% (95% CI: 44.0-65.6), increasing with age and being higher among employees of African or Caribbean origin than t…

Exploratory study of the occupational health and health-seeking of migrant and seasonal farmworkers on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The U.S. migrant and seasonal farmworker (MSFW) workforce is aging. Aging causes functional changes that can affect work performance and increase injury/accident risk. It also has been linked with deferred health-seeking. The exploratory study was conducted to investigate occupational injuries and health-seeking in Hispanic MSFW on the U.S.-Mexico border. Data were collected using an abbreviated Spanish-version of the California Agricultural Worker Health Survey. Nearly 60% of the 141 participants were middle-aged or older. Musculoskeletal injuries and those consistent with agrochemical and en

Does organisational myopia mediate the effect of occupational health and safety practices on the risk of occupational accidents in Turkish healthcare institutions?

Occupational health and safety (OHS) policies in healthcare institutions must be well managed, because healthcare practice involves many physical, biological, ergonomic, chemical, and psychosocial hazards that can affect the health of healthcare workers. In addition, their work performance may be affected by the so-called organisational myopia. In this context, the aim of our study was to determine how organisational myopia affects OHS practices in healthcare institutions and whether it increases the risk of occupational accidents. The study population consisted of a convenience sample of 420 …

Health Policy Perspectives-Realizing the Potential of Occupational Therapy in Supporting Postsecondary Student Mental Health and Success.

Postsecondary institutions around the world are grappling with how best to respond to what is described as a crisis in student mental health, with urgent calls for evidence-based advocacy, campaigning, and global action. In response to this call to action, in this article we advocate for a stronger role for occupational therapy in supporting student mental health in postsecondary settings through the enactment of the Okanagan Charter: An International Charter for Health Promoting University and Colleges, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2025. We share examples of innovative occupation

Implementation of Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy for Occupational Therapy (MERIT-OT) to Support Veterans Receiving Occupational Therapy Mental Health Services.

ImportanceMetacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy for Occupational Therapy (MERIT-OT) is a novel adaptation of an evidence-based psychotherapy model designed to enhance metacognitive capacity and support recovery. Its philosophical alignment with occupational therapy-particularly the emphasis on meaning-making and life participation-makes it a promising intervention for Veterans with serious mental illness. However, to date no implementation studies of MERIT-OT have been conducted.ObjectiveTo evaluate the implementation of MERIT-OT within a Veterans Affairs (VA) occupational therapy setti

Health conditions in aircrew - Association with neurotoxic substances and other occupational factors.

Aircrew are exposed to in-cabin engine oil and hydraulic fumes during work. A wide spectrum of symptoms, referred to as Aerotoxic Syndrome (AS), has been described in case series and health surveys. In addition, epidemiological studies have consistently shown elevated risks for breast cancer in females and for melanoma in both male and female aircrew members. The concentrations of neurotoxic, endocrine-disrupting, and carcinogenic components of fumes have been too low to explain chronic health effects. Instead, ionizing radiation, elevated ozone levels, and disruption of circadian rhythms have

Occupational exposure to antimony from cement additives: Speciation and health risk insights.

Antimony (Sb) is an emerging environmental contaminant of concern due to its persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity. Its trivalent form [Sb(III)] is of particular relevance, as it is classified as a suspected human carcinogen. In the cement industry, Sb-based additives are increasingly used to mitigate water-soluble hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], a highly toxic and allergenic compound. However, the environmental fate, chemical speciation, and occupational exposure to Sb during cement handling are still poorly characterized. This study developed and validated a robust analytical wo

Human-centered digital ecosystem: safeguarding healthcare workers' sleep, ergonomics, and occupational health.

Using Healthcare-Associated Infection (HCAI) surveillance as a representative model for high-burden administrative tasks, this Perspective argues that healthcare worker fatigue, sleep disruption, and poorly integrated digital systems threaten both occupational health and health-system resilience. Crucially, these problems should be addressed as failures of work-system design rather than deficits in individual resilience. We propose a Human-Centered Digital Ecosystem that places adequate staffing, circadian-aligned scheduling, protected recovery, and supportive organizational conditions before …

Health risks associated with occupational contaminants of heavy metals across different professions.

People in various occupations are chronically exposed to a wide range of workplace pollutants that affect overall health. Among these, certain heavy metals pose a risk even at low concentrations over prolonged exposure. This study aims to examine the health effects of specific heavy metals with chronic exposure in different occupational groups within the Pakistani population. A case-control approach was used, comprising 404 individuals with chronic exposure and 170 age- and gender-matched controls. Volunteers from seven different occupational groups participated in the study, including pump at
