Description of a return-to-work occupational therapy programme for stroke rehabilitation in Singapore.

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and the major cause of disability in Singapore. The number of stroke survivors is expected to rise with the increase in the ageing population. This paper describes how occupational therapists are involved in stroke and work rehabilitation in Singapore. A retrospective study of stroke clients referred to a vocational assessment unit in 2004 showed that 55% of the clients were able to return to work. The majority of the clients changed their job positions from blue-collar workers to clerical workers. On the other hand, the main reasons for poor outcome

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one residents, 44 women and 17 men, with an average age of 85.7 +/- 6.6 years (range 72-97 years) living in a Long-Term Care home (LTC) in Geneva were enrolled in a randomised controlled trial. They were divided at random into experimental (EG) and control groups (CG) with matched age and sex distribution. Two subjects passed away during the 3-month experimental period. Following medical history, plaque scores and t…

Development of a standardized occupational therapy screening tool for visual perception in adults.

Occupational therapy assessment and treatment of visual perceptual impairments are integral to the rehabilitation of clients following stroke and other acquired brain injuries. Occupational therapists need to identify the nature of visual perceptual performance impairments in order to choose rehabilitation intervention strategies appropriate for remediation of specific problems or to compensate for limitations in daily function. This paper describes the variations in visual perception terminology and occupational therapy approaches to visual perceptual assessment. Limitations of existing asses…

[Splints in occupational therapy of the hand in an Austrian central hospital--current status].

Ergotherapeutic splinting is essential in the treatment of diseases, injuries and innate deformities of the hand. However due to its high material and staff costs, a definitely diagnosed indication is a prequisite for prescription. A retrospective study was performed using the Krankenhausinformationssystem (KIS) to establish the total number of hand splints prescribed by the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the General Hospital of Vienna from 1/1992 until 8/1998, as well as referring doctors/departments and diagnoses leading to referral were recorded and descriptively eval

The role of occupational therapy in dementia-C.O.P.E. (Caregiver options for practical experiences).

Occupational therapy is a profession that enables individuals to regain, maintain or promote function after an illness, injury or disability occurs. The basis of the profession's philosophy derives from a recognition of the importance of meaningful activity (occupation) in people's lives to support function, quality of life and the debilitating effects of inactivity. Occupational therapy enhances the abilities of individuals to engage in the following performance areas: (1) activities of daily living (eg eating, bathing, toileting, functional mobility) and instrumental activities of daily livi…

A cross-cultural test of the validity of occupational therapy assessments with patients with schizophrenia.

The validity and use of psychosocial assessments in occupational therapy are ongoing concerns (Moyer, 1984) and were the focus of this study. Fifty African patients with schizophrenia and 10 nondysfunctional African volunteers took an an assessment battery that included the Schroeder, Block, Campbell Adult Psychiatric Sensory Integration Evaluation (SBC) (Schroeder, Block, Trottier, & Stowell, 1978), a daily activity, work, and leisure activity interview based on the Model of Human Occupation (Kielhofner, 1985), and a culture-specific test of functional performance. Data on subjects' psychiatr…

The therapeutic use of computers in occupational therapy with patients with closed head injuries.

Occupational therapists in various settings were surveyed to obtain information on their use of computers with closed head injured patients. The majority of therapists use micro-computers for cognitive rehabilitation followed by vocational rehabilitation. Respondents indicated that an efficient means of distributing information does not yet exist resulting in a high incidence of trial and error learning on the part of the therapist.

Experiences and perceptions of occupational therapy and physiotherapy practice education in research settings.

INTRODUCTION: Practice education is an essential component of occupational therapy programmes in Australia, providing supervised opportunities for students to develop skills across diverse practice settings. Rising student enrolments have intensified pressure on universities to secure sufficient practice education opportunities, prompting exploration of alternative models and emerging settings. The research setting, with supervision provided by occupational therapists working in research roles, presents a promising but under-utilised option for practice education. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed …

Occupational Therapy in the Treatment of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema: A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema (BCRL) is one of the most prevalent complications among patients, causing physical l … mphedema. Conclusions: The therapeutic approach to BCRL must be multidisciplinary and personalized. Occupational Therapy (OT) provides a person-centered approach that contributes to improving occupational performance and patient well-being. More studies with greater methodological rigor and sample size are needed to unify clinical criteria.

Occupational Therapy at the First Visit: A Case for Joint Consultation in Hand Care.

For many common hand conditions, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, and thumb base arthritis, both surgery and nonsurgical care can lead to good outcomes. The best choice depends on the patient's occupations and goals, so the patient should help make it. This is what shared decision-making, choosing together after weighing the options, is meant to do. In practice, though, patients often meet an occupational therapist only after deciding on surgery, so the nonsurgical option gets little attention when the choice is made. We argue that the occupational therapist belongs at the first

Effects of an mHealth Occupational Therapy Intervention on Functional Performance: A Pilot Study.

UNLABELLED: Neurodevelopmental disorders are one of the most prevalent conditions today, and among the limitations in activity and restrictions in the participation of children and their families, we find intervention in activities of daily living; therefore, research focused on outcome measurement is one of the most active lines, and after COVID-19, telerehabilitation has garnered special interest. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The study objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile health (mHealth) application in improving the performance of activities of daily living in children with ne

The Conceptual Analysis of Collaboration in the Occupational Therapy by Combining the Scoping Review Methodology.

BACKGROUND: Collaboration is an important concept in goal-setting in occupational therapy. However, this concept is not stable due to various definitions. The purpose of this study was to clarify the concept of collaboration in occupational therapy. METHOD: A scoping review was used to search for all articles related to occupational therapy and collaboration. PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and OT Seeker searches were conducted using predetermined keywords. Three examiners independently reviewed and assessed the quality of each study using Walker and Avant's concept analysis method. RESULTS:…

Use of the AusTOMs-OT to record outcomes in an occupational therapy homeless service.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational therapists provide services to homeless people internationally, yet relatively little research evidence underpins this practice. This study aimed to describe the process of selecting an outcome measure for use in a homeless occupational therapy service and demonstrate the changes experienced in the occupational performance of individuals participating in this service. METHOD: The Glasgow homeless occupational therapy service staff reviewed eight outcome measures against six pre-determined criteria. The selected tool was then used to collect data pre and post an occu…

Occupational Therapy for Reducing Disabilities in Persons with Disabilities in India: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The current evidence for occupational therapy practice, teaching, and research is replicated and implemented significantly from high-income countries in India.
