Multiple Orthokeratinized Odontogenic Cysts: A Report of Two Cases and Review of the Literature.

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts (OOC) are developmental odontogenic cysts characterised by an orthokeratinized stratified squamous epithelial lining. They were originally believed to be part of the spectrum of Odontogenic Keratocyst, but are now considered to be a distinct entity. They are rare, making up approximately 1% of all odontogenic cysts and they usually occur singly. In this paper we present two new cases of multiple OOCs, and compare them to previous case reports of multiple lesions. The clinical and pathological features are discussed, along with possible diagnostic pitfalls.

MR proton relaxivities of some ions, albumin, and cholesterol added to odontogenic jaw cysts.

The relaxation rates (1/T(1) and 1/T(2)) in cysts have already been analyzed in terms of materials such as albumin, cholesterol, manganese, iron, and copper. However, the relaxivities of these materials have not been determined yet. In this work, five sets containing the ions, albumin, and cholesterol were prepared by addition of increasing concentration of one material to each set. The relaxation times in these sets were measured by MRI, and the relaxation rates were fitted versus concentrations. The slopes of the fits were used as relaxivities. The (r(1), r(2)) values of manganese, iron, and

Relative incidence of odontogenic tumors and oral and jaw cysts in a Canadian population.

The diagnoses of 40,000 consecutively accessioned oral biopsies from the Oral Pathology Diagnostic Service, University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, were reviewed. All odontogenic neoplasm, neoplasm-like lesions (tumors), and true cysts of the oral tissues and jaws were listed. Clinical data were reviewed, and microscopic diagnoses were confirmed for cases in which diagnoses were ambiguous. Records of all cases were examined to identify distant referrals that were not representative of the study population. Of a total of 445 (1.11%) odontogenic tumors, 392 (0.98%) were lesions from patie

[Threedimensional reconstruction of odontogenic cysts and their relationship to teeth and bone (author's transl)].

This study reports on the first time three-dimensional presentation of odontogenic cysts demonstrated by means of a simple histological method. Histological sections of biopsy material having been embedded in paraffin were projected on cardboard. After the projections had been cut out, the single parts were arranged in a way to form a three-dimensional model. Radicular cysts are monolocular and exhibit a smooth surface. The individual cyst is surrounded unilaterally by epithelial cell remnants of Malassez opposite to the adhering tooth. The bone shows a reactive-inflammatory transformation. Ke…

Claudin expression and tight junction protein localization in the lining epithelium of the keratocystic odontogenic tumors, dentigerous cysts, and radicular cysts.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression and localization of tight junction proteins (TJPs) or claudins in the keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) and to correlate with its biological behavior. STUDY DESIGN: Five claudins (-1, -3, -4, -5, and 7) were examined immunohistochemically in 25 KCOTs and compared with 10 dentigerous cysts (DCs) and 10 radicular cysts (RCs). RESULTS: Marked claudin-3 loss of expression in KCOT basal layer (n=24/25; 96%) compared with DCs (n=1/10; 10%) and RCs (n=5/10; 50%) (P<.05) suggests that claudin-3 downregulation may indicate altered or

Immunohistochemical Comparison of Ki-67 and MCM-3 in Odontogenic Cysts: An Observational Study.

Odontogenic cysts are a diverse group of pathologic entities with different proliferation potential, leading to variations in their biological behavior. One of the most cited proliferation markers used in diagnostic histopathology is Ki-67. Another group of proteins recently investigated is minichromosome maintenance (MCM-3) and its expression has been evaluated in several odontogenic lesions but the results were controversial. Thus, the present study endeavored to compare the expression of MCM-3 and Ki-67 in odontogenic cysts. Furthermore, a pioneer attempt was made to evaluate the sensitivit…

Enucleation combined with guided bone regeneration in small and medium-sized odontogenic jaw cysts.

BACKGROUND: The odontogenic jaw cyst is a cavity containing liquid, semifluid or gaseous components, with the development of the disease. In recent years, with the rapid development of oral materials and the transformation of treatment of jaw cysts, more options are available for treatment of postoperative bone defect of jaw cysts. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) places biomaterials in the bone defect, and then uses biofilm to separate the proliferative soft tissue and the slow-growing bone tissue to maintain the space for bone regeneration, which is widely used in the field of implantology. Role of HIF-1α and CASPASE-3 in cystogenesis of odontogenic cysts and tumors.

OBJECTIVES: Odontogenic cysts and tumors are the most relevant lesions that affect the gnathic bones. These lesions have in common the formation of cystic areas and this common feature may suggest involvement of similar mechanisms. The hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α), a responsive protein to hypoxia and caspase-3, an irreversible apoptosis marker, may contribute to cyst formation. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the immunoexpression of these proteins in odontogenic cysts and tumors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty cases of ameloblastoma, keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KOT) (n = …

Differences in collagen fibres in the capsule walls of parakeratinized and orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts.

Epithelial-mesenchymal interactions are thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of odontogenic lesions. Keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) is a benign cystic neoplasm with a characteristic parakeratinized epithelial lining, which differs histologically and behaviourally from the so-called orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC). The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in collagen fibres within the fibrous tissue walls of KCOT and OOC. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples from 15 cases of KCOT and 15 cases of OOC were collected. Paraffin section

Spontaneous alignment of permanent successors after enucleation of odontogenic cysts associated with primary teeth.

Pulpotomy and pulpectomy occasionally lead to cyst formation in the primary dentition. They show specific clinical features of large size, rapid growth, buccal expansion and displacement of permanent teeth. Complete enucleation of the cyst with extraction of the associated primary teeth and preservation of the permanent teeth appeared to be the most suitable treatment option. Normal alignment of the permanent teeth occurred spontaneously even their initial positions were highly unfavourable.
