Correlations between unit firing and EEG in the rat olfactory system.

The olfactory EEG of awake animals displays oscillatory bursts of activity in the gamma- (30-100 Hz) range. The bursts are correlated with inflow of air over the receptor layer in the nose. None of the inputs to the cortices that display these oscillations carries periodic signals in the gamma-range. Thus these bursts are generated locally, either by neuronal feedback interactions or by coupling of oscillatory neurons. In the first case if the oscillations are generated by negative feedback, then two classes of cells must exist: excitatory neurons and inhibitory neurons with the same frequency

Electron microscopic study of the termination of the centrifugal fibers in the goldfish olfactory bulb.

The terminals of centrifugal fibers to the olfactory bulbs of goldfish were studied by electron microscopy after transection of the medial, lateral or entire olfactory tract. The centrifugal fibers originate in the telencephalic hemisphere, pass through both the medial and the lateral olfactory tract, and form synaptic contacts with dendrites in the granule cell layer.

Unilaterally disrupted structural and functional connectivity of the fronto-limbic system in idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

OBJECTIVE: Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) is rare and can either be associated with normal or defective olfactory sensation, classified as normosmic IHH (nIHH) or Kallmann syndrome (KS). We do not yet understand the central processing pathways in the olfactory system. We aimed to compare the resting-state structural and functional connectivity (FC) of olfactory neural pathways in patients with IHH. We hypotheses that alterations of structural connectivity and FC may exist in the olfactory cortex pathways in IHH patients. DESIGN: STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL CONNECTIVITY DATA RESU

Axonal growth by newly-formed vomeronasal neurosensory cells in the normal adult mouse.

Vomeronasal neurosensory cells which are continuously formed in adult mice have been shown to possess axons running in the vomeronasal nerves, since they undergo a reaction of retrograde cell death after vomeronasal nerve transection. Retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase has been combined with [3H]thymidine labelling of dividing cells to show that the axons of the newly-formed neurosensory cells reach their appropriate target, the accessory olfactory bulb.

Multiple axon guidance cues establish the olfactory topographic map: how do these cues interact?

Each primary olfactory neuron stochastically expresses one of approximately 1000 odorant receptors. The total population of these neurons therefore consists of approximately 1,000 distinct subpopulations, each of which are mosaically dispersed throughout one of four semi-annular zones in the nasal cavity. The axons of these different subpopulations are initially intermingled within the olfactory nerve. However, upon reaching the olfactory bulb, they sort out and converge so that axons expressing the same odorant receptor typically target one or two glomeruli. The spatial location of each of th

NADPH-diaphorase localization in the olfactory system.

NADPH-diaphorase staining was studied in the intact olfactory system and following transections of the olfactory nerve. Intense staining was found in the olfactory epithelia of rat and salamander, especially at the mucosal surface. The olfactory bulb nerve and glomerular layers were also stained. Transection of the olfactory nerve in salamander, or bulbectomy in rat, resulted in decreased staining at the mucosal surface, although staining increased in cells deeper in the epithelium. Deafferentation also caused the disappearance of staining in the olfactory nerve and glomerular layers of the bu

Pattern of rat olfactory bulb mitral and tufted cell connections to the anterior olfactory nucleus pars externa.

The pattern of output of mitral and tufted cells of the rat olfactory bulb (OB) to layer Ia overlying the pars externa (pE) of the anterior olfactory nucleus (AON) has been studied in the rat by iontophoresis of horseradish peroxidase and Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin. These agents labeled mitral and tufted cells and at least the proximal portion of their axons. In most cases we observed small branches from axons of the lateral olfactory tract that appear to terminate in the region of the pE AON, while the main axon could often be traced for considerable distances past these branches. The

Transection of the lateral olfactory tract does not produce anosmia.

Rats trained in an olfactometer were tested for retention of an odor detection and odor discrimination task after lesions of the olfactory peduncle. Large lesions of the peduncle, including transection of the lateral olfactory tract and anterior commissure resulted in severe deficits in retention and relearning but did not produce anosmia. Discrete lesions of the lateral olfactory tract had little or no effect on retention. The results indicate that the lateral and intermediate olfactory pathways are not essential for smell and suggest that significant olfactory function may be mediated by med…

Transmission and integration of biologically meaningful olfactory information after bilateral transection of the lateral olfactory tract in the rat.

The contribution of the olfactory inputs conveyed by the lateral olfactory tract (LOT) to the central olfactory areas in the onset of behavi … oted in rats with a unilateral transection of LOT. The results are discussed in relation to the two olfactory pathways (lateral and medial). During wakefulness, LOT seems essential to the olfactory information processing; in slow wave sleep, the medial olfactory pathways appear to mediate olfactory discrimination and to elicit adapted arousal.

Differential expression of two cell surface proteins, neuropilin and plexin, in Xenopus olfactory axon subclasses.

Immunohistochemistry by using monoclonal antibodies named A5 and B2, which specifically recognize cell surface proteins the neuropilin and the plexin, respectively, revealed that olfactory axons in Xenopus tadpoles were classified into several subgroups by virtue of the expression levels of these two cell surface molecules. The vomeronasal axons expressed the plexin but not the neuropilin. The plexin-positive and neuropilin-negative vomeronasal axons form a discrete fiber bundle, even after they joined with the principal olfactory axons. However, the principal olfactory axons were divided into

Olfaction and Pheromones: Uncanonical Sensory Influences and Bulbar Interactions.

The rodent main and accessory olfactory systems (AOS) are considered functionally and anatomically segregated information-processing pathways. Each system is devoted to the detection of volatile odorants and pheromones, respectively. However, a growing number of evidences supports a cooperative interaction between them. For instance, at least four non-canonical receptor families (i.e., different from olfactory and vomeronasal receptor families) have been recently discovered. These atypical receptor families are expressed in the sensory organs of the nasal cavity and furnish parallel processing

Modelling Olfactory Dysfunction in Rodents Through Intranasal Vanadium Exposure.

Olfactory dysfunction is increasingly recognized as an important consequence of exposure to environmental toxicants, owing to the anatomical and functional characteristics of the olfactory system, which allow inhaled toxicants to reach the central nervous system via the olfactory pathway. Experimental rodent models provide valuable tools for investigating the mechanisms underlying toxicant-induced olfactory injury under controlled conditions. In particular, intranasal vanadium exposure has emerged as a relevant experimental approach because it reproduces an environmentally relevant route of ex

Differential adhesion and the initial assembly of the mammalian olfactory nerve.

During the initial assembly of the olfactory pathway, the behavior of olfactory axons changes as they grow from the olfactory epithelium toward the telencephalic vesicle. The axons exit the epithelium singly or in small fascicles, and their growth cones are simple and bullet-shaped. Outside the epithelium, they make a sharp dorsal turn and fasciculate into a single nerve; the growth cones remain simple. Upon entering the ventromedial telencephalon, the axons defasciculate, branch extensively, and end in complex, lamellate growth cones which extend toward the ventrolateral aspect of the telence
