Sentinel lymph node mapping in endometrial and cervical cancer: a survey of practices and attitudes in gynecologic oncologists.

OBJECTIVE: To determine patterns among gynecologic oncologists in sentinel lymph node mapping (SLNM) for endometrial cancer (EC) and cervical cancer (CC). METHODS: A online survey assessing the practice of SLNM, including incidence, patterns of usage, and reasons for non-use was distributed to Society of Gynecologic Oncology candidate and full members in August 2017. Descriptive statistics and univariate analysis was performed. RESULTS: The 1,117 members were surveyed and 198 responses (17.7%) were received. Of the 70% (n=139) performing SLNM, the majority reported use for both CC and EC (64…

Expert radiation oncologist interpretations of involved-site radiation therapy guidelines in the management of Hodgkin lymphoma.

PURPOSE: Recently, involved-site radiation therapy (ISRT) guidelines have been developed and published to replace the previous concept of involved-field radiation therapy for patients with lymphoma. However, these ISRT guidelines may be interpreted in different ways, posing difficulties for prospective clinical trials. This study reports survey results regarding interpretation of the ISRT guidelines. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Forty-four expert lymphoma radiation oncologists were asked to participate in a survey that included 7 different cases associated with 9 questions. The questions pertained …

Microbiota and radiation-induced bowel toxicity: lessons from inflammatory bowel disease for the radiation oncologist.

New gastrointestinal symptoms are frequent after pelvic radiotherapy and can greatly affect the quality of life of cancer survivors. The effect of radiation on the intestinal microbiota, and the clinical implications of a modified microbial balance after radiotherapy are now beginning to emerge. In this Personal View, we show the importance of the microbiota for intestinal homoeostasis, and discuss the similarity between inflammatory bowel disease, which has been extensively researched, and radiation-induced gastrointestinal toxicity. By use of microbiota profiles for risk assessment and manip

The role of MR imaging in soft tissue tumor evaluation: perspective of the orthopedic oncologist and musculoskeletal pathologist.

Soft tissue masses are common in both children and adults. Clinicians must evaluate patients carefully to avoid management errors. The most effective management decisions are made when a working group composed of clinicians, radiologists, and pathologists participates in the interpretation of the imaging studies. Plain-film radiographs and MR imaging scans are the two main imaging modalities used in patients with soft tissue masses. The working group assimilates the clinical and radiographic data to determine if they can identify the nature of the soft tissue mass. When the group can assign a

Consistency in contouring of organs at risk by artificial intelligence vs oncologists in head and neck cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: In the Danish Head and Neck Cancer Group (DAHANCA) 35 trial, patients are selected for proton treatment based on simulated reduc … d dysphagia. RESULTS: The AI contours showed significantly better consistency than the contours by oncologists. The median and interquartile range of DSC was 0.85 [0.78 - 0.90] and 0.68 [0.51 - 0.80] for AI and oncologist contours, respectively. The median and interquartile range of MSD was 0.9 mm [0.7 - 1.1] mm and 1.9 mm [1.5 - 2.6] mm for AI and oncologis …

Italian oncologists and vaccinations against infectious diseases: Results of a survey of the Italian Association of Medical Oncology.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cancer present a higher risk of vaccine-preventable diseases. Recommended vaccinations are the most cost-effective measure to reduce the risk of transmission and related complications. Nevertheless, vaccination rates are inadequate. Oncologists have a central role in tailored vaccine communication to their patients. We present the results of a survey conducted by AIOM in 2022, focusing on the perception of the problem by oncologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An anonymous 31-item online questionnaire was shared on 15 September 2022 on the AIOM website. The objectives of…

Association between cystoscopy at the time of hysterectomy performed by a gynecologic oncologist and delayed urinary tract injury.

OBJECTIVE: Guidance regarding the use of cystoscopy at the time of hysterectomy is lacking in gynecologic oncology. We compare the rate of delayed urinary tract injury in women who underwent cystoscopy at the time of hysterectomy performed by a gynecologic oncologist for benign or malignant indication with those who did not. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients who had a hysterectomy performed by a gynecologic oncologist recorded in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program between January 2014 and December 2017. The primary outcome was delayed urinary tract inju

Patterns of practice in palliative radiotherapy for bleeding tumours in the Netherlands; a survey study among radiation oncologists.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Palliative radiotherapy (RT) is one of the treatment options for bleeding tumours; a frequent symptom in patients with advanced cancer. The optimal RT schedule is however unclear. This study explores the current pattern of practice of palliative RT for bleeding tumours in the Netherlands. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An internet-based questionnaire, including respondent characteristics, factors influencing the choice of RT schedules and five patient case scenarios, was sent to all members of the Dutch Society for Radiation Oncology. Descriptive statistics were used to evalua

How Does MR Imaging Help Care for the Breast Cancer Patient? Perspective of a Medical Oncologist.

Although traditional assessment with clinical examination, mammogram, and ultrasound is generally accepted for detection and staging of breast cancer, MR imaging is commonly used to detect occult cancers in the breast and regional nodes in the early stage and to determine the extent of disease in patients with metastatic disease. Several studies have shown a variety of uses for MR imaging in the staging of breast cancer and assessment of treatment response in the neoadjuvant (preoperative) setting. This article reviews the impact of MR imaging in different settings on medical oncology decision
