[Distribution of myelinated fibers in the outer plexiform layer of the optic tectum in the frog, Rana temporaria].

Distribution of myelinated nervous fibers in the layer 9 of the optic tectum of the frog Rana temporaria has been investigated in normal animals as well as 6--9, 60 and 134 days after contralateral enucleation. Counts were made on long and oriented sections at the screen of electron microscope. Fields of myelinated fibers in the layer 9, visible under light microscopic, are not distinguished by higher density of these fibers and differ from the other parts of sections probably due to some qualitative differences, especially because of parallel orientation of these fibers within a field. Avoiding Clinical Misinterpretation and Artifacts of Optical Coherence Tomography Analysis of the Optic Nerve, Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer, and Ganglion Cell Layer.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become an important tool for diagnosing optic nerve disease. The structural details and reproducibility of OCT continues to improve with further advances in technology. However, artifacts and misinterpretation of OCT can lead to clinical misdiagnosis of diseases if they go unrecognized. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A literature review using PubMed combined with clinical and research experience. RESULTS: We describe the most common artifacts and errors in interpretation seen on OCT in both optic nerve and ganglion cell analyses. We provide examples

Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography in patients with no light perception secondary to optic atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides useful structural information that can augment functional data. Newer spectral-domain technology provides faster and higher resolution images than time-domain machines. Although each measures the same structures, the values systematically differ. We evaluated eyes with longstanding no light perception (NLP) visual acuity secondary to optic atrophy using spectral-domain OCT to determine minimum retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional chart review study to identify patient

WDM bi-directional transmission over 35 km amplified fiber-optic bus network using Raman amplification for optical sensors.

We demonstrate a novel distributed fiber Raman amplified bus topology used for WDM transmission over 35 km of single-mode fiber by use of a multiwavelength Raman pump laser and eight Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). This topology reduces the number of addressing wavelengths needed at the head of the bus. Furthermore, by relocating the FBGs' wavelengths of a first section, it is obtained power transparency at the end of the overall bus, without requiring any additional pump source. We show how the topology allows the received powers from the first section sensors to be equalized and partially ampli

Multiple access fiber-optic radio-frequency transfer, time, and phase synchronization using symmetric carrier configuration and passive optical coupling.

In this Letter, we propose a multiple access fiber-optic radio-frequency transfer, time, and phase synchronization scheme using passive optical coupling and symmetric carrier configuration. In the proposed scheme, the RF signal is distributed to distant nodes via a symmetric carrier configuration, which inherently suppresses link length-dependent phase difference. Access nodes are connected to the fiber link via passive optical coupling. Time signals are generated at each node by leveraging transferred frequency signals and synchronized by time-division multiplexing transmission and active del

Impulse blockade by intraocular tetrodotoxin during optic regeneration in goldfish: HRP-EM evidence that the formation of normal numbers of optic synapses and the elimination of exuberant optic fibers is activity independent.

Optic fibers and synapses labeled with HRP were counted in the primary optic innervation layer of tectum after continuously blocking visual impulse activity with TTX during regeneration. Normal numbers of optic and nonoptic fibers and synapses were found at both 30 and 60 d, and key ultrastructural features of optic afferents such as fiber fasciculation, myelination, terminal clustering, synaptogenesis onto different classes of postsynaptic targets and general morphology were not notably affected by impulse blockade. These findings indicate that during regeneration the normal proliferation and

Novel optical fiber Vernier immunosensor based on cascading Sagnac loops embedded with excessively tilted fiber grating for specific detection of canine distemper virus.

A novel optical fiber Vernier effect (VE) biosensor based on cascading Sagnac loops embedded with excessively tilted fiber grating (ExTFG) is proposed for the label free and specific detection of canine distemper virus (CDV). The VE was realized by cascading two different Sagnac loops with similar free spectrum range (FSR), one of which was integrated with panda-type polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) as the reference loop, and the other was embedded with ExTFG as the sensing loop. Owning to the amplified function of the VE, the refractive index (RI) sensitivity of the proposed sensing struc

Graphite Photoacoustic Detector Based Fiber-Optic Gas Sensing with 2f/1f Self-Calibration.

A high-precision fiber-optic gas sensing system integrating a graphite photoacoustic (PA) detector with 2f/1f self-calibration is presented to reduce the influence of laser power fluctuations while retaining noncontact detection. A graphite flake and a microcantilever are copackaged within a brass housing to form a solid-state PA detector. A modulated laser beam passes through the target gas in a Herriott multipass cell and strikes the graphite flake; the absorbed optical power is converted into a PA response, which is subsequently detected by a fiber-optic cantilever microphone. The multipass

Simplified fiber-optic integrated sensing and IM/DD communication enabled by a frequency-swept laser.

Intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical networks require fiber-optic integrated sensing and communication (F-ISAC) schemes with low hardware complexity and negligible communication penalty. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a simplified F-ISAC scheme enabled by a frequency-swept laser (FSL), which directly generates the periodically swept optical carrier and eliminates the external-modulation-based swept-carrier generation stage. With a single intensity modulator, the system supports 70-Gb/s six-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-6) signal transmission and distri

An automated fiber-optic SPR platform with a self-assembled peptide interface for sPD-L1 analysis.

An automated dip-probe fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (FO-SPR) method was developed for soluble programmed death-ligand 1 (sPD-L1) quantification. The system employs a one-step self-assembled epitope-mimicking peptide (EMP) as the capture element. Through a terminal cysteine, the EMP binds directly onto the gold probe to form a capture interface, eliminating the need for chemical cross-linking. Coupled with an antibody-conjugated gold nanoparticle (Ab-AuNP) sandwich assay, the FO-SPR platform achieved a limit of detection of 20.5 ng/mL in diluted human serum with recoveries ranging from
