Hexavalent chromium-induced congenital abnormalities in chick embryos.

The embryotoxic and teratogenic potential of hexavalent chromium was evaluated in chick embryos. Different concentrations of aqueous solution of potassium dichromate ranging from 1.00 to 100.00 microg per egg were injected into chick eggs before incubation. A dose-dependent embryonic mortality was observed in all the groups examined on days 7 and 14 of incubation. The following malformations were observed in survivors: reduced body size and organs; microphthalmia; micromelia; everted viscera; abnormal and twisted neck, beak and spinal cord; isolated epicarditis; club foot; haemorrhage; and pat

Morphological and biochemical effects of excessive amounts of biotin on embryonic development in mice.

Pregnant mice received excessive amounts of biotin either subcutaneously (sc) or orally during gestation. There were no differences in the successful pregnancy rates and number of dead or resorbed fetuses between the control and biotin-treated groups. In biotin-treated groups no increased incidence of fetuses with external malformations was clearly demonstrable. However, biotin accumulated in maternal and embryonic organs; especially, the serum biotin level in the biotin-treated dam was 200-fold higher than that in the control dam. There was a difference in biotinidase activity in maternal ser

Angiogenesis induction by tumors, embryonic tissues, and lymphocytes.

Although it is well established that tumors can induce endothelial cell mitosis and angiogenesis leading to extensive neovascularization, little is known concerning the spectrum of normal cells or tissues that may have similar inductive capabilities. A variety of developmentally active tissues were tested: mouse embryonic organ rudiments, mouse and rabbit trophoblast and placenta, and blastemal fragments obtained from regnerating deer antlers. Assays for angiogenesis included grafts made to the chorioallantoic membrane of chick embryos and grafts placed intracorneally in adult rabbit eyes. Vir

Spontaneous embryonic death in plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus - Rodentia), a species with unique reproductive characteristics.

Spontaneous embryonic death is a conserved reproductive event in Eutherians. The macro and microscopic characteristics of this type of death are similar between the different taxa. However, in the hystricomorphic rodent plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus) is exceptional in terms of massiveness (80% embryonic resorption). In this species, of the 10-12 implantation sites (IS) (half in each uterine horn), only the caudal embryos will survive, resorbing the cranial and intermediate IS. We hypothesize that uterine structural variations in L. maximus restrict growth and promote embryo death, with t

Case Report: A Unique Case of Pediatric Central Nervous System Embryonal Tumor Harboring the CIC-LEUTX Fusion, Germline NBN Variant and Somatic TSC2 Mutation: Expanding the Spectrum of CIC-Rearranged Neoplasia.

Central nervous system (CNS) embryonal tumors (WHO grade IV) are a heterogeneous group of rare, poorly differentiated neuroepithelial malignant neoplasms that commonly occur in children, and they have a poor prognosis. The 2016 WHO (World Health Organization) classification of CNS tumors created a major shift in paradigm of the classification of embryonal tumors. However, some cases were still difficult to classify. Further integrative genomic analysis is needed to improve the precise classification, diagnosis and treatment of CNS embryonal tumors. Herein, we firstly report a case of CNS embry

Mathematical modeling of human embryonic and fetal growth rates.

A mathematical model for human embryonic/fetal growth data from implantation to birth is developed. In previous work, it was shown that an unbiased estimate for human fetal growth data from about day 50 post-conception until term could be calculated from the Gompertz equation. This period represents a range of embryonic/fetal weights from one to 3500 g. When the Gompertz equation is extended, with no change of parameters, to the prenatal period before 50 days, the predicted weights have a consistent bias which might have a biological basis. Early embryonic growth immediately following fertiliz

Characterization of monoclonal antibodies against tenascin-C: no apparent effect on kidney development in vitro.

Tenascin-C is an extracellular matrix glycoprotein found in embryonic mesenchyme. The precise biological function of tenascin-C is unknown, but different parts of the molecule have effects on cell adhesion and other cellular activities. We studied the expression and role of tenascin-C in the embryonic mouse kidney. By Northern blots, no tenascin-C was detectable in uninduced mesenchyme from day 11 embryonic kidneys, but after 24 hours of in vitro culture both major splice variants of tenascin-C were detected. The larger variant was the predominant form. By in situ hybridization tenascin-C mRNA

Toxic effects of bisphenol AF on the embryonic development of marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma).

Bisphenol AF (BPAF), an emerging environmental endocrine disruptor, has been detected in surface waters worldwide and has adverse effects on aquatic organisms. The accumulation of BPAF in oceans and its potential toxic effect on marine organisms are important concerns. In this study, the effects of BPAF (10, 100, 1, and 5 mg/L) on marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) were evaluated, including effects on the survival rate, heart rate, hatchability, morphology, and gene expression in embryos. The survival rate of marine medaka embryos was significantly lower after treatment with 5 mg/L BPAF than i

Miscellaneous newly recognized types of CNS tumors in the WHO CNS5 classification (other than gliomas, glioneuronal and embryonal tumors).

In this review, we describe salient features of a few of the newer entities recognized in the fifth edition of World Health Organization (WHO) classification of central nervous system (CNS) tumors. While most of these have been offshoots of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) methylation profiling of CNS tumors with distinct profiling such as desmoplastic myxoid tumor (DMT) of the pineal region, SMARCB1-mutant, these also demonstrate subtle, distinct morphological features, which should be carefully searched for to diagnose them.

Ontogeny of the head of the Pacific hagfish (Eptatretus stouti, Myxinoidea): development of the lateral line system.

The head of adult hagfishes (jawless craniates, Myxinoidea) of the family Eptatretidae displays a number of skin grooves of uncertain origin. These grooves have been homologized to the neuromast lines of other craniates, and they are innervated by two ganglionated cranial nerves that have been interpreted as lateral line nerves. The grooves do not, however, contain the compound receptors that are typical of a lateral line (i.e. neuromasts or electroreceptors), and both their development and function have remained enigmatic. To elucidate the embryonic origin of the grooves (which should develop

Pathology of the pleura.

The pleura and lung are intimately associated and share many pathologic conditions. Nevertheless, they represent two separate organs of different embryonic derivation and with different yet often symbiotic functions. In this article, the authors explore the pathologic manifestations of the many conditions that primarily or secondarily affect the pleura.

LGL-1 and the RhoGAP protein PAC-1 redundantly polarize the Caenorhabditis elegans embryonic epidermis.

Apical-basal polarity is essential for epithelial organization and function and is established by conserved cortical polarity proteins. However, the requirements for canonical polarity factors vary between tissues and organisms. For example, the basolateral protein lethal giant larvae is essential for epithelial polarity in Drosophila but dispensable in Caenorhabditis elegans. To better define the epithelial polarity program in C. elegans, we performed a genome-wide RNAi screen for synthetic lethality with lgl-1. Combined loss of LGL-1 and the RhoGAP PAC-1 caused embryonic lethality due to elo

Imaging Worm Early Development: A Practical Manual for New Researchers.

According to the strain distribution record from the Caenorhabditis Genetics Center (CGC) presented at the 25th International Worm Meeting in 2025, approximately 8,000 laboratories across 80 countries use these animals in their research. Establishing a sustainable culture and maintenance platform is essential for generating first-hand data on worm behaviors, particularly in laboratories with limited experience or resources. Here, using Caenorhabditis elegans as an example, we present a practical protocol for new researchers to establish basic worm-handling and -imaging workflows. We then descr

Approaches for immunological tolerance induction to stem cell-derived cell replacement therapies.

The shortage of donors for organ transplantation and also to treat degenerative diseases has led to the development of the new field of regenerative medicine. One aim of this field, in addition to in vivo induction of endogenous tissue regeneration, is to utilize stem cells as a supplementary source of cells to repair or replace tissues or organs that have ceased to function owing to ageing or autoimmunity. Embryonic stem cells hold promise in this respect because of their developmental capacity to generate all tissues within the body. More recently, the discovery of induced pluripotent stem c

Cell cycle proteins in normal and chemically induced abnormal secondary palate development: a review.

Cell cycle progression and thus proper cell number is essential for normal development of organs and organisms. Craniofacial tissues including the secondary palate are vulnerable to disruption of cell cycle progression and proliferation by many chemicals including mycotoxin, secalonic acid D (SAD), glucocorticoids, retinoic acid and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin. Induction of cleft palate (CP) by SAD in mice occurs from a reduction in the size of developing palatal shelves. This is associated with an inhibition of proliferation of murine and human embryonic palatal mesenchymal (MEPM and HEP

Early commitment of embryonic neocortical cells to develop area-specific thalamic connections.

In this study we examined the thalamic connectivity developed by grafts of embryonic (E16) parietal or occipital cortex placed homo- or heterotopically into the neocortex of newborn rats. We also examined the cytoarchitectonic organization developed by the grafts. Our findings indicate that E16 parietal cortex grafted into the parietal cortex of newborn recipients develops reciprocal connections with the host thalamic ventrobasal complex (VB) but does not establish connections with the host dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (DLG). When implanted into the occipital cortex, these grafts are stil

Fibroblast growth factor 8: Multifaceted role in development and developmental disorder.

Fibroblast growth factor 8 (FGF8), a secreted signaling molecule, involves in regulating cell survival, proliferation, migration, and differentiation. It exhibits a highly dynamic gene expression pattern throughout embryonic development, participates in craniofacial structures, limbs, internal organs, brain development, and is crucial during organogenesis. The dysregulation of precise localization and dosage of FGF8 at distinct embryonic stages can lead to developmental multiorgan abnormalities. This comprehensive review explores the FGF8 expression in humans and mice, summarizes the involveme

Notch signaling in the immune system.

The Notch signaling pathway regulates many aspects of embryonic development, as well as differentiation processes and tissue homeostasis in multiple adult organ systems. Disregulation of Notch signaling is associated with several human disorders, including cancer. In the last decade, it became evident that Notch signaling plays important roles within the hematopoietic and immune systems. Notch plays an essential role in the development of embryonic hematopoietic stem cells and influences multiple lineage decisions of developing lymphoid and myeloid cells. Moreover, recent evidence suggests tha

Left-right symmetry breaking in mice by left-right dynein may occur via a biased chromatid segregation mechanism, without directly involving the Nodal gene.

Ever since cloning the classic iv (inversedviscerum) mutation identified the "left-right dynein" (lrd) gene in mice, most research on body laterality determination has focused on its function in motile cilia at the node embryonic organizer. This model is attractive, as it links chirality of cilia architecture to asymmetry development. However, lrd is also expressed in blastocysts and embryonic stem cells, where it was shown to bias the segregation of recombined sister chromatids away from each other in mitosis. These data suggested that lrd is part of a cellular mechanism that recognizes and s

Development of the facial midline.

"Intellectual excellence lies in having faith in the observation of apparently nontranscendental and unimportant facts. To observe an anatomic element calmly, with an open, analytical spirit, and with spiritual freedom, can lead to an explosive vortex of new knowledge."-Miguel Orticochea, M.D.(1) Traditional descriptive embryology based upon the interaction of frontonasal, lateral nasal, and medial nasal prominences is incapable of explaining the three-dimensional development of the facial midline. The internal structure of the nose and that of the oronasal midline can best be explained by the
