Periodontal status of buccally and palatally impacted maxillary canines after surgical-orthodontic treatment with open technique.

This study investigated differences in periodontal health variables between buccally impacted maxillary canines (BIMC) and palatally impacted maxillary canines (PIMC) after surgical-orthodontic treatment with open technique. Nineteen patients were enrolled: 10 with unilateral BIMC (5 men, 5 women; mean age 18.50 ± 1.96 years) and 9 with unilateral PIMC (4 men, 5 women; mean age 19.44 ± 2.40 years). Probing depth and keratinized tissue were recorded 12 months after surgical-orthodontic treatment, and the differences between the 2 sides were analyzed as primary outcomes. In addition, data for BI

Compressive stress in periodontal ligament under orthodontic movements during periodontal breakdown.

INTRODUCTION: This analysis aimed to assess quantitatively and qualitatively the compressive stress (S3) in periodontal ligament in a gradual periodontal breakdown (0-8 mm) under orthodontic movements. Correlations between the applied forces, the level of bone resorption, the decrease of force magnitude, and S3 increase were also conducted. METHODS: On the basis of cone-beam computed tomography examinations (voxel size, 0.075 mm), nine 3-dimensional models of the second mandibular premolar with intact periodontium were created and then individually subjected to various levels of horizontal bo

Class III correction and enhanced periodontal health with aligner treatment in a 53-year-old patient.

In this case report, we describe the successful camouflage treatment of a 53-year-old female with dental and skeletal Class III malocclusion combined with anterior crossbite, gingival recession, and mobility of the lower incisors, using clear aligners. The treatment involved periodontal debridement followed by orthodontic treatment. The mandibular posterior teeth were distalized to correct the anterior crossbite and to establish Class I molar relationships. During treatment, the mandibular incisors were intruded, and the mandibular occlusal plane underwent a clockwise rotation due to slight ex

CLINICAL AND RADIOGRAPHIC CHANGES FOLLOWING ORTHODONTIC INTRUSION OF OVERERUPTED MAXILLARY MOLARS WITH TWO MINI-IMPLANTS.

Objective - to evaluate clinical and radiographic changes of orthodontic intrusion of upper first molars with two mini-implants, using light intrusion forces, to create the space for prosthetic rehabilitation on the lower jaw. In 20 patients (aged between 26.8 and 45) with secondary deformities in the lateral region in the vertical direction, associated with partial absence of teeth in the lower jaw, and orthodontic preparation for subsequent prosthetics was performed. Each subject was missing 1-2 teeth in the lateral segment. All patients were divided into two groups: with intrusion mechanics

Regenerative periodontal surgery and orthodontic therapy in the treatment of patients with stage IV periodontitis and pathologic tooth migration.

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from stage IV periodontitis are often characterized by pathologic tooth migration, drifting, flaring, posterior bite collapse, and secondary occlusal trauma (case type 2). Many times, these patients seek treatment because of functional and esthetic demands. The majority of these patients could benefit from an integrated, interdisciplinary approach combining periodontal therapy and orthodontics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This narrative review aimed to update the scientific evidence on current treatment approaches for patients with stage IV case type 2, presenting wi

Interdisciplinary Orthodontic-Endodontic Management of Complex Dental Trauma Involving Three Permanent Anterior Teeth: A Clinical Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Dental trauma presents a considerable challenge for clinicians due to the diverse and complex effects on teeth. Effective management often requires the collaboration of multiple specialists, including endodontists and orthodontists. Case Presentation: This case report presents the interdisciplinary management of a complex dental trauma case involving three permanent maxillary anterior teeth. Unlike most reports of dental trauma, this case includes complete pre-trauma diagnostic records, providing valuable baseline information for treatment planning and out

Combined Surgical and Orthodontic Treatment of Complex Odontoma in Growing Patients: Presentation of Two Cases.

Background/Objectives: Odontomas are the most common mixed odontogenic tumors and may cause impaction of adjacent teeth and masticatory diso … d if the tumor is diagnosed and removed early before its root formation is completed; otherwise, an orthodontic extrusion is needed. Interdisciplinary cooperation is important to diagnose and plan the dental treatment in young patients with odontomas.

Impacted Mandibular First Molar: A Rare Riddle.

Tooth impaction incidence is in the range of 5.6 to 18.8% of the population. Eruption failure of the first permanent molar is very rare; the prevalence is 0.01% of the population. The permanent molars are of particular importance in providing adequate occlusal support as well as coordinating facial growth. Failure of the eruption of permanent molars might lead to an array of complications like a reduction in the vertical dimension, extrusion of the antagonist teeth, a posterior open bite, inclination and resorption of adjacent teeth, and cyst formation. Various treatment modalities for impacte

Morpho-functional restoration of an element in esthetic area through modified intentional replantation: A case report with 16 months follow-up.

This study aims to evaluate the success of the morpho-functional restoration of a tooth with subgingival carious lesion using the modified r … l replantation can be a valid alternative to the surgical lengthening of the clinical crown, to the orthodontic extrusion or to the surgical extrusion. This variation allows obtaining an apical stop during the replanting phase, which contributes to the stabilization of the element. Due to the short follow-up examination from us, further studies are necessary.

The finite element analysis of stress in the periodontal ligament when subject to vertical orthodontic forces.

In the past, vertical intrusive movement of teeth has been considered difficult and most routine clinical vertical movement of teeth has been confined to extrusion. It has been suggested that attempts at intrusion may result in an increased incidence of root resorption and also in occasional devitalization. The displacement and resulting stress fields associated with such treatment can be successfully studied using the finite element method. In the case being considered initial movements are known to be small; therefore, the assumption in the study that the material behaves linear-elastically

Orthodontic treatment with clear aligners for a patient with chronic periodontitis.

This case report describes the treatment of an adult female patient with a history of periodontal disease, Class I malocclusion with extrusion, dental spaces, and pathologic tooth migration. The patient was treated with clear aligners, which effectively controlled the strength and direction of orthodontic forces after 3 months of systematic periodontal treatment. The Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) index was calculated from study models before and after treatment. The pretreatment PAR score was 24, and the posttreatment PAR score was 4. The PAR score for this patient changed by 83%. Satisfactory

Orthodontic reconstruction with autotransplantation and bone grafting after a traffic accident.

This case report describes the orthodontic treatment with autotransplantation and bone grafting of the lost maxillary alveolus for a patient injured in a traffic accident. This patient had a severe skeletal Class III relationship because of the loss of 6 maxillary teeth and the adjacent alveolar bone. Autotransplantation of mandibular first premolars and bone grafting of the deficient alveolus were carried out to improve the occlusion and the profile. After orthodontic treatment, the transplanted premolars were reshaped and restored with composite as central incisors. Good occlusion and cosmet

Crown lengthening with removable orthodontics: a combined approach for ideal esthetics.

Cases in which a single tooth is in need of crown lengthening while remaining esthetically pleasing represent a unique challenge. A case is presented here in which crown lengthening in a challenging esthetic situation on a canine was achieved through forced eruption with a removable orthodontic appliance. The case was considered a success by both the clinician and the patient. Fabrication of the acrylic stent is a simple procedure that can be completed chairside, and the patient's acceptance of the appliance as well as the overall cost and time invested made this a very convenient alternative.

[Apical root resorption during orthodontic treatment].

Pre- and posttreatment radiographs of 2050 orthodontically treated patients were examined and apical root resorptions of more than 2 mm were identified. 30 patients (211 teeth) were affected. Treatment characteristics and objectives of this group (with severe apical root resorption) were compared to a treated group of 30 patients (with no resorption) to determine clinical risk factors. Extrusion, but especially jiggling and a long treatment period were found to be significantly more frequent in the group exhibiting resorption than in the control group. Pathogenesis of treatment-induced root re

Early orthodontic traction does not compromise root development in inversely impacted maxillary central incisors: a three-year cone-beam computed tomography evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether early orthodontic traction of inversely impacted maxillary central incisors with curved roots affects subsequent root development and labial/palatal alveolar bone support. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-based study was conducted in 42 children (7-9 years) with unilateral inversely impacted maxillary central incisors at Nolla stages 6-7 who underwent early orthodontic traction after space creation with a 2 × 4 appliance. Contralateral erupted incisors served as intra-individual controls. CBCT was performed pre-operati

Periodontal status after surgical-orthodontic treatment of labially impacted canines with different surgical techniques: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Good periodontal status is essential for a successful treatment outcome of impacted maxillary canines. Whereas the surgical technique used for tooth uncovering has been shown not to affect the final periodontal status of palatally impacted canines, its effect on labially impacted canines is still unclear. METHODS: Searches of electronic databases through January 2015 and reference lists of relevant publications were used to identify studies evaluating the periodontal status of labially impacted canines after combined surgical-orthodontic treatment. Two reviewers independently sc

Orthodontic approach to dilacerated central incisor localized horizontally on the anterior nasal spine: a case report.

The purpose of this paper was to present a case of surgical exposure of a horizontally impacted permanent maxillary left central incisor followed by fixed orthodontic treatment to eruption in a 9-year-old boy with a 2-mm overjet and 2-mm overbite who had sustained a traumatic injury to his primary maxillary central incisors when he was 6-years-old. Panoramic, occlusal, and cepholometric radiographs showed the affected tooth's crown to be positioned horizontally, and a CT scan showed the impacted central incisor's crown to be located below the anterior nasal spine and its apex to be located par
