Congenital cholesteatoma is a rare entity. It arises from aberrant epithelial remnants left at the time of closure of the neural groove, between the 3rd and 5th week of embryonic life. Otoscopy typically shows a pearly white mass, medial to the intact tympanic membrane, primarily in the anterosuperior quadrant, without a preceding history of otorrhoea, tympanic membrane perforation or surgery. It can present at any age from birth to early adulthood. The most common presenting symptom is hearing loss or facial nerve palsy. We present a non-classical presentation of congenital cholesteatoma with

This case report describes a lethal complication of retrograde air insufflation through the Eustachian tube after myringotomy. A 35-year-old woman presented with otalgia and hearing loss in her left ear, which had occurred after an upper respiratory infection. Otoscopy showed a middle ear effusion. A myringotomy was performed under mask anesthesia in a private clinic. During subsequent retrograde Eustachian tube insufflation, the patient experienced sudden convulsions, followed by cardiac and respiratory arrest. The patient then died some hours later from generalized cardiac and circulation br

To assess the prevalence of otitis media in Tanzania a study was made of 3772 patients attending for the first time the ENT out-patient department of Muhimbili Medical Centre, University Hospital of Dar es Salaam. Otitis media in one form or another was present in 524 patients (14 per cent). The majority reported a long history of ear discharge. Hearing loss was a major complaint and was often found to be between 40-60 dB. H.L. Most patients admitted previous treatment, but otoscopy had rarely been performed. The medical profession in Tanzania cannot possibly deal with the large number of case

Acute otitis media is the most common bacterial infection of childhood. The effectiveness of oral antihistamine-decongestant mixtures in the treatment of this illness remains controversial in clinical practice. In a double-blind randomized study, 82 children (aged under 15 years) with acute otitis media were treated with amoxicillin and either a decongestant-antihistamine mixture (Dimetapp) or placebo. All diagnoses required agreement between a family practice resident and the supervising family physician. Clinical course was assessed by symptom diaries completed by parents and by follow-up ex

INTRODUCTION: Facial nerve weakness is most commonly due to Bell's palsy or cerebrovascular accidents. Rarely, middle ear tumor presents with facial nerve dysfunction.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a very unusual case of middle ear osteoma in a 49-year-old Caucasian woman causing progressive facial nerve deficit. A subtle middle ear lesion was observed on otoscopy and computed tomographic images demonstrated an osseous middle ear tumor. Complete surgical excision resulted in the partial recovery of facial nerve function.
CONCLUSIONS: Facial nerve dysfunction is rarely caused by middle ear tum

MATERIAL AND METHODS: 361 children at age from 11 months to 18 years with otitis media with effusion (OME) were inspected after tympanostomy during 2013-2018 years. Treatment was carried out in accordance with the stages of OME: secretory, mucous, fibrous. The main diagnostic methods were: otoscopy, tympanometry, endoscopy, computed tomography. Surgical treatment may be required already at the secretory stage of the disease, as well as in all cases with mucous and fibrous stages of OME.
RESULTS: In children with recurrences of OME and in patients with congenital cleft lip and palate, it is pr

The round window serves to decompress acoustic energy that enters the cochlea via stapes movement against the oval window. Any inward motion of the oval window via stapes vibration leads to outward motion of the round window. Occlusion of the round window is a cause of conductive hearing loss because it increases the resistance to sound energy and consequently dampens energy propagation. Because the round window niche is not adequately evaluated by otoscopy and may be incompletely exposed during an operation, otologic surgeons may not always correctly identify associated pathology. Thus, radio

OBJECTIVE: Middle ear salivary gland choristoma are extremly rare. We report a case, describe the clinical management and review the literature.
CLINICAL CASE: A 12 year old boy presented with unilateral conductive hearing loss associated with a large inferior retraction pocket on otoscopy. CT scan demonstrated a large mass in the left middle ear cavity. The incus was absent and the stapes was partially eroded. Middle ear exploration demonstrated an 8 mm yellow/red mass in the region of the fallopian canal. This mass was comptly removed and histopathology confirmed salivary gland choristoma.

We report a rare case of incus dislocation to the external auditory canal after a mountain-biking accident. Otoscopy showed ossicular protrusion in the upper part of the left external auditory canal. CT indicated the disappearance of the incus, and an incus-like bone was found in the left external auditory canal. There was another bony and board-like structure in the attic. During the surgery, a square-shaped bony plate (1 x 1 cm) was found in the attic. It was determined that the bony plate had fallen from the tegmen of the attic. The fracture line in the posterosuperior auditory canal extend

Hearing screening is well established in most developed countries, and the data extensively published. However, little information has been presented by the developing, nonwhite populations. A screening study was carried out on 2202 Jamaican children aged 5 to 7 years. This involved tympanometry and pure-tone audiometry (frequencies of 0.5, 1, and 2 kHz.) Failure was considered to have occurred if a type B or C curve was obtained or if the threshold of hearing was greater than 20 dB. These children were further evaluated by a full ear, nose, and throat examination, inclusive of pneumatic otosc

On the basis of our own experiences and the current literature, the following guidelines were established for the evaluation of scubadivers: 1. The ENT physical examination must include otoscopy and the valsalva manoeuver. The scubadiver should be able to promptly and symmetrically inflate his middle ear spaces. A central perforation is a relative contraindication, while a marginal ear drum perforation is an absolute contraindication for scubadiving. 2. Recommendations to the diver: Ear pressure equalibration should be performed continuously with increasing and decreasing water depth. Ear plug

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with disabilities are often reported to have a high prevalence of undetected hearing disorders/loss, but there is no standardized hearing test protocol for this population. The purposes of this study were (1) to examine the hearing status of students with special needs in Taiwan, and (2) to investigate the use of an on-site hearing test protocol that would adequately detect hearing problems in this population and reduce unnecessary referrals for off-site follow-up services.
METHODS: A total of 238 students enrolled in two schools for special education and one habilitat

BACKGROUND: Congenital cholesteatoma (CC) of middle ear is a rare entity that may go undiagnosed for years. Patients with CC who are diagnosed at a later stage of disease have poor outcome. There is controversy regarding the best way to delineate CC preoperatively. More specifically, the need to obtain preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan in all cases of CC is debated.
OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to determine factors that may influence the outcome of surgery in CC as well as the value of obtaining preoperative CT scan in CC.
METHOD: A retrospective chart review of all patients

BACKGROUND: Eustachian tube dysfunction is common and implicated in persistent middle ear disease. Recent studies suggest the promise of balloon dilatation of the Eustachian tube to modify local anatomy and physiology, restoring normal function.
OBJECTIVES: A literature review of the outcomes of balloon dilatation of the Eustachian tube was conducted, assessing four criteria (tympanometry, otoscopy findings, Valsalva and subjective symptoms). Outcomes were divided into short term (≤ 6 months) and long term (>6 months). Rates and severity of complications were documented. We also assessed cost

INTRODUCTION: Giant arachnoid granulation can induce lateral sinus stenosis with sigmoid sinus dehiscence, causing pulsatile tinnitus with pulsatile tympanic membrane without retrotympanic mass.
CASE REPORT: A 78 year-old man presented unilateral left pulsatile tinnitus since 2009, with recent aggravation. Otoendoscopy showed a pulsatile tympanic membrane, in which movement was halted by jugular compression or Valsalva maneuver. CT angiography and MRI found large arachnoid granulation causing left lateral sinus stenosis and eroding the sigmoid sinus wall. Stenting resolved the tinnitus, while

A study of 112 referred children with acute otalgia labeled 'acute otitis media' by the referring physicians was carried out at the E.N.T. clinic of Lagos University Teaching Hospital in 1981-1982. Only 11% of these were actually due to acute otitis media, reflecting poor technique at otoscopy. Of the acute otalgia cases 56% were due to ear pathology while 44% resulted from referred pain. Otological causes included foreign body in the ear (23%), acute otitis media (11%), otitis externa (10%), secretory otitis media (6%) and myringitis bullosa haemorrhagica (4%). Cases due to referred otalgia w

Sixty-three children from 2 to 12 years of age were studied by means of brain stem evoked potentials (BEP) and otoscopic evaluation in a preliminary assessment of the sensitivity of BEP latency measures to middle ear abnormality. Wave I proved to be the most sensitive component; 81.25% of subjects with acute suppurative otitis media and 62.50% of subjects with secretory otitis media demonstrated latencies prolonged by more than 1 SD beyond the values observed in normal control subjects. Of the same subject groups, 86.21% and 93.31% demonstrated wave I latencies within normal limits upon retest
