BACKGROUND: Vast differences in barriers to care exist among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) groups and may manifest as disparities in stage at presentation and access to treatment. Thus, we characterized AANHPI patients with stage 0-IV colon cancer and examined differences in (1) stage at presentation and (2) time to surgery relative to white patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We assessed all patients in the National Cancer Database (NCDB) with stage 0-IV colon cancer from 2004 to 2016 who identified as white, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Native Hawaiian, Korean,

Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) is the most common sexually transmitted bacterium globally. Endocervical and vaginal microbiome interactions are rarely examined within the context of Ct or among vulnerable populations. We evaluated 258 vaginal and 92 paired endocervical samples from Fijian women using metagenomic shotgun sequencing. Over 37% of the microbiomes could not be classified into sub-community state types (subCSTs). We, therefore, developed subCSTs IV-D0, IV-D1, IV-D2, and IV-E-dominated primarily by Gardnerella vaginalis-to improve classification. Among paired microbiomes, the endocervix

UNLABELLED: The diverse geographic, demographic, and societal factors in the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) have contributed to unique epidemiological patterns of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B. Transmission can be during pregnancy, at the time of birth or via breastfeeding for HIV, and can have long-term adverse outcomes. Given the similarities in prevention of mother-to-child transmission of these infections, coordinated interventions for triple elimination are used. This systematic review has evaluated the peer-reviewed literature, grey literature, and global databases to

PURPOSE: Determine sociocultural influences on dietary behavior, body image, weight loss, and perceptions of the cultural appropriateness of a meal-timing intervention design and menu among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) women at risk of endometrial cancer.
METHODS: Six 90-min videoconference focus groups among NHPI women (n = 35) recruited by a community champion in Utah. Eligible women were aged ≥ 18 years at risk of endometrial cancer (i.e., BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, history of non-insulin-dependent diabetes or complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia) had a working cell phone capable o

Tobacco product use rates among Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NHPI), Asian American, and Filipino American young adults in Hawai'i have risen rapidly in recent years following the introduction of electronic nicotine delivery systems. Though some research has examined tobacco use correlates for these demographics of young adults, research examining protective factors, such as cultural connectedness, is lacking. Additionally, research that disaggregates Asian Americans from Pacific Islanders is scarce, despite the differing risk and protective factors that have been determined for each group

Although Asian/Pacific Islanders are considered a single ethnic/racial category in national studies, Native Hawaiians/other Pacific Islanders (NHOPIs) and Asians show marked disparities in health outcomes and risk behaviors, including substance use. Currently, knowledge regarding the psychosocial mechanisms by which NHOPI ethnicity is associated with increased substance use, compared with Asian or White, is limited, especially among emerging adults. The present study tested a model in which the relationship between NHOPI ethnicity and higher substance use (i.e., current tobacco, alcohol, marij

Congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) infection can cause lifelong medical and developmental conditions and management needs. There is limited information on the strengths and weaknesses of the systems of care for addressing ZIKV and other neurodevelopmental disabilities (NRD) in the United States (US) Affiliated Pacific Island Territories. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to assess the quality of the chronic illness systems of care for children with congenital ZIKV and other NRD in the US Pacific Island Territories. A cross-sectional study was conducted among health professionals from American

The association between heavy rainfall and an increased risk of diarrhea has been well established but less is known about the effect of drought on diarrhea transmission. In 2011, the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu experienced a concurrent severe La Niña-associated drought and large diarrhea outbreak. We conducted a field investigation in Tuvalu to identify factors that contributed to epidemic transmission in the context of a drought emergency. Peak case numbers coincided with the nadir of recorded monthly rainfall, the lowest recorded since 1930. Independent factors associated with increased

PURPOSE: The present study identifies risk factors for intimate partner violence (IPV) initiation and persistence over three years in a high psychosocial risk Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) sample of women with children living in Hawaii.
METHODS: We included 378 women in a 3-year relationship with the same partner who reported IPV experiences at baseline and 3 years later. Baseline risk factors included characteristics of each woman, her partner, and their relationship. Bivariate and multivariate regression models were conducted to assess the influence of risk factors on the likel

OBJECTIVE: There is little asthma research that compares ethnic differences in airway responsiveness and word descriptors among African Americans, Hispanic-Mexican Americans, Asian-Pacific Islanders, and Whites. Thus, identifying ethnic differences in symptom descriptors and airway responsiveness may improve health outcomes by educating health professionals about treatment decisions that are culturally and ethnically sensitive.

BACKGROUND: Extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounts for much of the increase in NHL incidence in the past three decades in the United States, but its descriptive epidemiology is scarce in the literature.
METHODS: Incidence data for the years 1999-2003 were from 38 population-based cancer registries, covering 82% of US population. We grouped anatomic sites of extranodal NHLs according to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) site recodes, and histology subtypes according to the nested classification of lymphoid neoplasms developed by the Pathology Working Group of the I

OBJECTIVE: To examine the role of genetic variation in the renal urate transporter SLC2A9 in gout in New Zealand sample sets of Māori, Pacific Island, and Caucasian ancestry and to determine if the Māori and Pacific Island samples could be useful for fine-mapping.
METHODS: Patients (n= 56 Māori, 69 Pacific Island, and 131 Caucasian) were recruited from rheumatology outpatient clinics and satisfied the American College of Rheumatology criteria for gout. The control samples comprised 125 Māori subjects, 41 Pacific Island subjects, and 568 Caucasian subjects without arthritis. SLC2A9 single-nucl

PURPOSE: We assessed the prevalence, incidence, and correlates of substance use among Asian American individuals transitioning from adolescence to young adulthood.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, Wave II (1996) and Wave III (2001). Information on substance use was abstracted from a nationally representative sample of 1108 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) from both Waves. Weighted prevalence, incidence, and patterns of smoking, binge drinking, marijuana use, and other drug use were analyzed by sexual orientation and gender. Mu

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies suggest that exposure to racist online interactions and content may be associated with depressive symptoms and suicide risk among racially minoritized individuals. Despite the hate and violence easily encountered online, individuals use social media platforms to engage with their mental health concerns and seek support. Hence, the current study aimed to explore whether online mental health engagement would buffer the depressive symptoms and suicide risk associated with online racism among Black and Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) emerging adults (18-29) who

OBJECTIVE: This study examined 1) longitudinal trajectories of depression and suicidal ideation (SI) trajectories over the first 10 years after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a sample of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) individuals; 2) demographic and injury-related predictors of these trajectories; and 3) time-varying depression symptoms as predictors of SI.
SETTING: Participants who completed inpatient rehabilitation at a TBI Model Systems (TBIMS) center.
PARTICIPANTS: Three hundred seven AAPI participants with moderate-to-severe TBI.
DESIGN: Multisite, longitudinal observation

BACKGROUND: Asian Pacific Islanders (APIs) represent one of the fastest-growing racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Yet, national data on temporal trends and in-hospital outcomes of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in this population remain limited.
METHODS: Using the National Inpatient Sample, we conducted a retrospective analysis of AMI hospitalizations from 2003 to 2022. Hospitalizations were stratified into two groups based on race/ethnicity: APIs and non-APIs. Propensity score matching was used to match both study groups, and in-hospital outcomes were then analyzed.
RESULTS:

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is one of the leading cancer sites diagnosed among Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians (AANHPI). To better understand the patterns of lung cancer incidence among AANHPIs, we examined the incidence trends of five histologic cell types of lung cancer across ten AANHPI populations in comparison with non-Hispanic Whites.
METHODS: Lung cancer incidence data from 1990 through 2010 were obtained from 13 U.S. population-based cancer registries. Age-adjusted histologic cell-type-specific incidence rates and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Joinpoin
