Extracardiac rhabdomyomas are very uncommon tumors comprising approximately 2% of the neoplasms of striated muscle origin. The adult extracardiac rhabdomyoma is generally characterized as a slowly growing, usually solitary lesion, which is nearly always found in the head and neck area of elderly persons. The most common reported head and neck subsites are the floor of the mouth, tongue, palate, lips, and cheeks. We report an unusual presentation of rhabdomyoma that should be included in the differential diagnosis of tumors presenting as a large tonsillar fossa mass. In our review of the almost

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is rare mesenchymal neoplasm that has been originally and most often documented in the pleura. Recently, the ubiquitous nature of the SFT has been recognized with reports of involvement of numerous sites all over the body, i.e, upper respiratory tract, breast, somatic tissue, mediastinum, head, and neck, etc. The diagnosis of SFT still remains an enigma in our field. Furthermore, malignant SFT is extremely rare and only two cases have been reported in the oral cavity till date. Here, we present a rare case report of an aggressive solitary fibrous tumor which presen

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the comparative incidence of obstructive sleep apnea following velopharyngeal insufficiency surgery in the United States.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of cleft and noncleft pediatric patients who underwent velopharyngeal insufficiency surgery was performed using the IBM MarketScan Commercial Database. Patients were tracked longitudinally from 2007 to 2016 to evaluate the incidence of obstructive sleep apnea. Multivariable regression was used to evaluate predictors of postoperative obstructive sleep apnea and surgical revision.

BACKGROUND: A traumatic neuroma is not a true neoplasm but a reactive proliferation of neural tissue that commonly occurs after the transection or damage of a nerve bundle. Traumatic neuromas are rare in the oral region and usually occur as a solitary nodule of the mental foramen, lower lip, or tongue. This is the first report of a diffuse traumatic neuroma of the palate.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old Japanese man was referred to our clinic complaining of painful swelling of the left side of his palate. The swelling was diffuse and his pain increased with palpation of his palate. He had no

BACKGROUND: The lack of certain essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) induces perturbation in cell proliferation, apoptosis and dedifferentiation that could be linked to an increased protumorigenic trend. Contrarily, n-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) arrest cell proliferation in several tumor models. According to the concept of field cancerization, multiple patches of abnormal epithelial proliferation may coexist in the vicinity of oropharyngeal neoplasms. The purpose of the present study is to determine whether certain dietary PUFAs differentially modulate the patterns of cell prolifer

Salivary gland tumours can arise in any location in the oral cavity but are rather rare in the retromolar region. The majority of the salivary neoplasms arising here are malignant in nature. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is more commonly seen in the palate. Tumours arising in the retromolar region tend to show symptoms late in onset and may be greater in extent than evident clinically. Imaging studies will help in understanding the full extent of these lesions. We report a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in a young female patient who reported for orthodontic correction. In the course of ex

Neoplasms of retromolar trigone have important peculiarities due to their spatial relationships with the surrounding structures. Tumours that involve this area can extend to nearby muscles; adipose spaces; and other anatomic structures, such as the soft palate, the tonsillar fossa, the parapharyngeal space, and the floor of the mouth. In spite of a relatively quick diagnosis, the real extent of these tumours is typically underestimated at clinical examination. Our purpose was to propose a systematic approach to the use of multiplanar computed tomography reconstructions to evaluate normal retro

A rare case of a 5-year-old female with schwannoma of the maxillary sinus is presented. She had complained of painless swelling of the left cheek and hard palate for a duration of one year. Preoperatively, a CT scan strongly suggested it to be a maxillary cyst with an erupted tooth rather than neoplasm. The tumour was completely removed after embolization of the left internal maxillary artery. The tumour was composed of spindle cells in a palisading pattern and intercellular collagenous fibres. Mitotic figures and atypical nuclei were not observed. Immunohistochemically, the majority of the ce

Review of the world literature revealed 16 cases of intraoral rhabdomyomas. Thirteen additional cases of intraoral rhabdomyomas from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology are reported. The neoplasm occurred principally in adults (mean age 56 years), and the male-female ratio was greater than 2:1. The majority of cases occurred in the floor of the mouth, followed by the soft palate, tongue, and buccal mucosa. Recurrences occurred in four (30 percent) cases, and there was one multiple recurrence. One residual tumor, the result of incomplete surgical removal was noted. Although the

Spindle cell mesenchymal neoplasms are a diverse and often challenging diagnostic group. While morphological impression is sufficient for some diagnoses, increasingly immunohistochemical and even molecular data is required to render an accurate diagnosis, which can lead to the characterization of new entities. We describe five cases of novel mesenchymal neoplasms with rearrangements in the NCOA2 and NCOA3 genes partnered with either CTCF or CRTC1. Three tumors occurred in the head and neck (palate, auditory canal), while the other two were in visceral organs (lung, urinary bladder). All cases
