PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between gluteal adipose tissue fatty acids and sleep quality parameters in obese patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS).
METHODS: Fatty acids were measured by gas chromatography in 63 OSAS patients, and sleep was assessed by polysomnography.
RESULTS: Significant positive correlations were found between total sleep time, sleep efficiency, slow-wave sleep, and fatty acid concentrations (myristic, palmitic, stearic, saturated fatty acids, oleic acid, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and n - 6 fatty acids).
CONCLUSIONS:

Oleic and palmitic acids at concentrations above 1.1 mg percent (40 micrometer) are capable of displacing bilirubin from the serum albumin-bilirubin conjugates. The release of bilirubin is also demonstrated by thin layer gel chromatography. Since both oleate and palmitate constitute the major fatty acids in breast milk, the results may indicate that the development of jaundice in breast-fed infants could result at least in part from elevated levels of free fatty acids present in the blood serum of these neonates.

Fatty acids of the phospholipid fraction of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from patients with bacterial pneumonia or with the adult respiratory distress syndrome were chromatographed and the patterns compared with those for a control group. In the control group, palmitic acid (16:0) was the predominant fatty acid, accounting for 58.0% (SD 8.25%) of the total fatty acid, a proportion significantly higher (p less than 0.001) than in the distress-syndrome group (42.1%, SD 4.88%) or the acute pneumonia group (32.1%, SD 1.73%). There was a greater proportion of oleic acid (18:1) in the disease groups

BACKGROUND: Post hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) is associated with high mortality. However, its pathophysiology remains unclear. This study explores the interactions among inflammation, fatty acids, and lipid peroxidation in the development of PHLF.
METHODS: Using mouse models of 70% (regeneration) and 86% (failure) partial hepatectomy, we examined neutrophil activity, TNF-α signaling, CD36-mediated palmitic acid transport, and ACSL4-dependent lipid peroxidation. Neutrophils were depleted via anti-Ly6G antibodies, and TNF-α, CD36 and ACSL4 were inhibited by etanercept, sulfosuccinimidyl ole

The mechanisms by which noradrenaline, lipolytic agents and long-chain fatty acids stimulate glucose transport were investigated in rat brown adipocytes. Glucose transport was evaluated with tracer D-[U-14C]glucose and cell respiration was measured polarographically. Noradrenaline increased basal oxygen consumption (8-10-fold) and glucose transport (4-5-fold) in a dose-dependent manner, with a maximal stimulation at 100 nM. The stimulatory effects of noradrenaline on respiration and glucose transport were selectively mimicked by dibutyryl cyclic AMP (DBcAMP), 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine, chole

In order to determine the in vivo activity against the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, two doses (50 and 75 mg/kg) of a chloroform extract of Carica papaya seeds were evaluated compared with a control group of allopurinol. The activity of a mixture of the three main compounds (oleic, palmitic and stearic acids in a proportion of 45.9% of oleic acid, 24.1% of palmitic and 8.52% of stearic acid previously identified in the crude extract of C. papaya was evaluated at doses of 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg. Both doses of the extracts were orally administered for 28 days. A significant reduction (p < 0.05) i

Among the preventative and protective strategies against the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation to the skin is the application of antioxidants. Ascorbic acid has been shown to protect against sunburn, delay the onset of skin tumors, and reduce ultraviolet-B-radiation-induced skin wrinkling. In this work, we sought to determine the antioxidative properties of a lipid-soluble derivative of ascorbic acid, ascorbic acid-6-palmitate. We found that ascorbic acid-6-palmitate reduced cellular levels of reactive oxygen species following ultraviolet B irradiation. Treatment of keratinocytes with a

A fractionation methodology of fat, oil and grease (FOG) deposits was developed based on the insolubility of fatty acid salts in dichloromethane (DCM) and the relatively high solubility of fatty acids and triglycerides in DCM. Using this method, coupled with spectral analysis, it was shown that fatty acids rather than fatty acid salts were the predominant species in FOG deposits obtained from three metropolitan locations in the United States and that fatty acid triglycerides were either not detected or were present in very small concentrations. This solubility-based fractionation approach also

Primary hyperaldosteronism is a major cause of secondary hypertension and carries additional cardiovascular risks beyond that of the elevated blood pressure. Primary hyperaldosteronism is more prevalent in obese people, and weight loss reduces aldosterone levels. It needs to be determined whether obesity related factors directly contribute to the pathogenesis of primary hyperaldosteronism. Here we show that the non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) palmitic acid, and to a lesser extent, linoleic acid significantly stimulated aldosterone production and steroid enzyme induction in adrenocortical HAC

Synaptosomes were incubated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) to examine whether the presynaptic action of snake venom phospholipase A2 (PLA2) toxins is due either to the release of fatty acids resistant to extraction by BSA or to the liberation of a specific fatty acid type. In the presence of BSA (0.5% or 1.0%) two PLA2 enzymes from Naja naja atra and Naja naja kaouthia snake venoms that do not have a predominant presynaptic action at the neuromuscular junction (PS-) did not stimulate acetylcholine (ACh) release from synaptosomes. In contrast, two PLA2 enzymes (beta-bungarotoxin, scutoxin) tha

Ultra-high-field 7-T 1H-MRS resolves the bis-allylic resonance at 2.8 ppm, a marker present only in fatty acids (FAs) with two or more double bonds, enabling distinction between monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in IMCL that is not achievable at 3 T. The objective of this study was to determine the relative proportions of saturated (SFA), MUFA, and PUFA in IMCL in vivo using 7-T 1H-MRS. To further improve the precision of this fitting, we acquired high-resolution 600-MHz 1H-NMR spectra of representative FA species and incorporated their chemical shifts as prior kno

Pre-pregnancy obesity is increasingly common and predisposes pregnant women and offspring to gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, fetal growth abnormalities and stillbirth. Obese women exhibit elevated levels of the two most common dietary fatty acids, palmitate and oleate, and the maternal blood containing these nutrients bathes the surface of trophoblasts of placental villi in vivo We test the hypothesis that the composition and concentration of free fatty acids modulate viability and function of primary human villous trophoblasts in culture. We found that palmitate increases syncytiotrophob

The study explores the formulation of triptorelin, a therapeutic peptide used in prostate cancer treatment, within an emulsion-based delivery system to address challenges associated with rapid clearance and limited stability in aqueous environments. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were integrated with formulation design to provide molecular-level insight into the encapsulation process, interfacial organization, and hydration behavior of triptorelin in systems comprising palmitic acid, Tween 80, and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400). Four distinct systems were analyzed: triptorelin–water, t

We investigated palmitate uptake and utilization by contracting cardiac myocytes in suspension to explore the link between long-chain fatty acid (FA) uptake and cellular metabolism, in particular the role of fatty acid translocase (FAT)/CD36-mediated transsarcolemmal FA transport. For this, an experimental setup was developed to electrically stimulate cardiomyocytes in multiple parallel incubations. Electrostimulation at voltages > or =170 V resulted in cellular contraction with no detrimental effect on cellular integrity. At 200 V and 4 Hz, palmitate uptake (measured after 3-min incubation) w

Erythrocyte-membrane fatty acid composition and cholesterol content were evaluated along with serum selenium in 33 patients with liver cirrhosis and in 40 normal subjects. Thirteen patients were suffering from post-viral (group V) and 20 from alcoholic (group A) cirrhosis. The aim of the study was to elucidate whether membrane lipid abnormalities in cirrhosis were linked to the aetiology of the disease or whether they were the results of the cirrhotic process itself. The patients presented a significant increase in membrane cholesterol, palmitic acid (C16:0) and saturated fatty acids (SFA), an

INTRODUCTION: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common chronic liver disease, is characterized by lipid droplet (LD) accumulation in more than 5% of hepatocytes. This study aimed to investigate apoptosis in HepG2 cells exposed to palmitate, oleate, and a combination of palmitate and oleate.
METHODS: The effective concentrations of palmitic and oleic acids were determined using the MTT assay. Subsequently, an optimal combined dose of these fatty acids was selected to induce LD formation. Intracellular LD accumulation following treatment with different concentrations of palmit

BACKGROUND: Saturated fatty acids are toxic to liver cells and are believed to play a central role in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. In experimental steatohepatitis induced by feeding mice a methionine-choline-deficient (MCD) diet, the degree of liver damage is related to dietary sugar content, which drives de novo lipogenesis and promotes the hepatic accumulation of saturated fatty acids. The objective of this study was to determine whether dietary palmitate exerts the same toxicity as carbohydrate-derived palmitate in the MCD model of fatty liver disease.
METHODS: We fed

Hepatosteatosis is a common metabolic disorder of dairy cows, especially during early lactation. Currently, there are a few models of bovine hepatic steatosis available, including primary hepatocytes, liver slices, and animal models. Studies that elucidate the influence of single fatty acids on lipid classes, fatty acid pattern, gene expression, and phenotypic changes are still limited. Hence, we investigated the suitability of the fetal bovine hepatocyte-derived cell line BFH12 as a model for hepatosteatosis. To create a steatotic environment, we treated BFH12 with stearic acid, palmitic acid
