BACKGROUND: This study aimed at identifying genomic regions that underlie genetic variation of worm egg count, as an indicator trait for parasite resistance in a large population of Australian sheep, which was genotyped with the high-density 600 K Ovine single nucleotide polymorphism array. This study included 7539 sheep from different locations across Australia that underwent a field challenge with mixed gastrointestinal parasite species. Faecal samples were collected and worm egg counts for three strongyle species, i.e. Teladorsagia circumcincta, Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus col

An experiment was conducted in calves to investigate the efficacy of a morantel sustained release trilaminate bolus (MSRT) to control gastrointestinal parasitism and to assess the development of immunity during the use of MSRT. Two groups (M and U) of four calves each were infected three times a week with a mixed Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora infection for 12 weeks. Calves of Group M received an MSRT at the start of the experiment. Twenty weeks after the start of the experiment, all animals, including a previously uninfected control group (C), received a challenge with 100,000 Os

The Green iguana (Iguana iguana) is a popular wildlife species in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region, that has been recognized as being host to various parasites and diseases. Despite this significance, few studies address the parasite epidemiology of these species in the Caribbean region and particularly in the island of Trinidad and Tobago where the iguana is recognized as a popular 'wild' meat animal. This study investigates the presence of gastrointestinal (GI) parasites in both captive and wild Green iguana populations in Trinidad and Tobago. A total of 52 faecal samples were o

The examination of feces for stages of parasitic helminths is the most widely used methodology for the intravital diagnosis in domestic animals of patent endoparasitism including pulmonary nematode infections. Although there is only little information on the relationship of lungworm larval excretion and corresponding parasite burdens, fecal larval counts are used as indirect measure ("biomarker") for the intensity of infection, for instance in anthelmintic efficacy studies. To assess the relationship between fecal larval and Protostrongylus rufescens parasite counts in sheep, log-transformed d

Faecal egg counting techniques (ECTs) are useful tools for assessing anthelmintic efficacy and selecting hosts resistant to parasite infection. McMaster (MM) is one of the most commonly used ECTs, but it suffers from low sensitivity and precision. Mini-FLOTAC (MF) has been proposed to replace MM, but so far has not been evaluated for gastro-intestinal nematode infections in chickens. This study compared sensitivity, precision, and accuracy of MM and MF with two trials using egg-spiked faecal samples ranging from 50-1250 eggs per gram of faeces (EPG). In addition, effects of two flotation fluid

An animal trial was conducted to measure the concentrations of ivermectin occurring in abomasal and small intestinal contents and mucosa, and in the target parasites (Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora) following administration by subcutaneous, oral and pour-on routes. Twenty-five steers were infected with ivermectin-resistant isolates of O. ostertagi and C. oncophora and following patency randomly allocated to 3 treatment groups of 7 and 1 untreated control group of four. On day 0, animals in the treatment groups were administered ivermectin via the oral, injectable or pour-on routes

In this review, the main gastrointestinal nematodes infecting cattle in Zimbabwe and the epidemiological factors influencing their occurrence are reviewed and discussed. Nineteen gastrointestinal nematode species that belong to seven families have been found to occur in cattle in Zimbabwe. The main genera reported to date are Cooperia, Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus and Oesophagostomum and the dominant species are Cooperia pectinata, Cooperia punctata, Haemonchus placei and Trichostrongylus axei. The mixed infection by several species from the genera is the cause of parasitic gastroenteritis in

The distribution of intestinal capillariasis has been extended continuously through Asian countries. The first case in Korea was reported in 1993, and here we add 2 more cases. One case is a 41-year old man who was diagnosed by both eggs in the feces and worms in the biopsy specimen of the ileum. This case was supposedly infected in Indonesia. The other is a 78-year old man, who has not been abroad, and suffered from intractable diarrhea. He was diagnosed by eggs in the feces, and several juvenile worms were collected after anthelmintic treatment. In both cases the treatment was successful by

The effect of albendazole therapy was studied in 6 cats with pulmonary paragonimiasis induced by experimental inoculation of metacercariae (25/cat) of Paragonimus kellicotti. At 76 to 101 days after they were inoculated, 5 cats were administered an oral aqueous suspension of albendazole in 2 divided doses totaling 20 mg (2 cats), 50 mg (1 cat), or 100 mg (2 cats)/kg of body weight each day for 14 to 21 days. The 6th cat (control) was not administered albendazole. Nine days after cats were given the 50- and 100-mg/kg dosages, Paragonimus ova were not seen in the feces of 3 cats. There was marke

Schistosoma mansoni was first reported in the area of Richard Toll (Senegal) in 1988 and spread rapidly in the community, after a series of human-engineered ecologic changes. A random population sample (n = 422) from Ndombo, a village near Richard-Toll, was studied in 1991 by stool examination (four Kato slides from two stool samples) and antigen detection in urine and blood. Stool-positive individuals were treated with 40 mg/kg of praziquantel. A house-to-house interview regarding side effects was conducted 24 hr after treatment. Two hundred ninety-eight subjects were re-examined 10 days (ant

INTRODUCTION: Mammomonogamus ierei is a parasitic nematode that infects the nasal cavities and nasopharynx of cats in limited geographic areas. Despite reports of prevalence reaching up to 45% in cats in some regions, no studies have evaluated effective treatment options, highlighting the need for a validated therapeutic approach.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of eprinomectin, as part of the topical combination product NexGard® Combo (esafoxolaner-eprinomectin-praziquantel), in treating naturally acquired M. ierei infections in cats. Efficacy against other

BACKGROUND: Analyses of environmental correlates of the composition of gastrointestinal parasite communities in black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra) have been hindered by inadequate calibration techniques of detection and quantification methods of the parasites. Here we calibrate samples and compare the likelihood of parasite detection using two flotation techniques, FLOTAC and Mini-FLOTAC, and compare flotation solution, preservation method and dilution ratio for egg detection and counts of the most common parasites (Controrchis spp. and Trypanoxyuris spp.) in howler monkeys.
RESULTS: For s

Parascaris spp. infects foals worldwide and may cause airway inflammation in addition to small intestinal impaction and rupture. It is observed that acquired immunity eliminates ascarid burdens beginning at about 6 months of age, and current evidence suggests that a single parasite generation propagates in each foal crop. The purpose of this study was to monitor natural parasitic infections in untreated mixed breed horse foals over the course of 0-300 days of age. Fecal samples were collected monthly from all foals born in 2014 (n=13), beginning July 2014 through February 2015. Fecal egg count

This study aimed to assess soil contamination with Ancylostoma spp. eggs in public parks and playgrounds in Hue City. A total of 240 soil samples were collected from 60 public parks and playgrounds located in two urban zones (central urban and peri-urban areas) during both the rainy and dry seasons. Ancylostoma spp. eggs were detected at 48 of 60 sampling sites (80%). The proportion of contaminated sites was significantly higher in central urban areas compared with peri-urban areas and during the rainy season compared with the dry season. In contrast, no significant differences were observed b

Human strongyloidiasis, caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, is a neglected disease of high worldwide prevalence, with considerable potential for severe, fatal outcomes in complicated cases. Studies using the rodent parasite Strongyloides venezuelensis as a model have provided valuable insights into strongyloidiasis, yet efficient, standardised methods for isolating large quantities of viable parasite eggs for biomedical research remain scarce. This study revisits and modernises the classical flotation principle, presenting a saturated-solution centrifugation protocol for egg recovery from inf

Nematodes of the superfamily Trichostrongyloidea, particularly abomasal species, have severe clinical implications associated with high morbidity and potential mortality of exotic ruminants housed in zoological institutions. The life cycle and ecology of Trichostrongyloid gastrointestinal nematodes (TGN) present challenges in their control including development of anthelmintic resistance and reinfection in high-density managed herds. Copper oxide wire particles (COWP) are used to help control TGN infections in ruminants, administered as a bolus or a feed additive. This study investigated the e

The intensive use of anthelmintics has resulted in resistant parasite populations in horses. The objective of this trial was to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacies of the anthelmintics fenbendazole, ivermectin and abamectin in 24 horse farms in Northern Minas Gerais. Egg counts per gram of faeces (EPG) were performed individually in 619 animals. Animals presenting EPG counts greater than or equal to 150 were used in the tests on faecal egg count reduction (FECR), totalling 436 equines. These animals received the anthelmintics, fenbendazole, ivermectin, and abamectin. Faeces were collected 14
