Borrelia spp. in ticks and birds from a protected urban area in Buenos Aires city, Argentina.

This study was aimed to know epidemiological aspects of Borrelia spp. in a protected urban area of Buenos Aires city, Argentina, where thousands of people visit this area for recreational purposes. Ticks were collected from vegetation, birds and dogs. Three hundred and forty birds belonging to 43 species, 41 genera, 18 families and six orders were captured (90.3% corresponded to the order Passeriformes). One hundred and twenty ticks were collected from 47 birds (13.8%) belonging to 10 species (23.2%), all of them from to the order Passeriformes (Emberizidae, Furnariidae, Parulidae, Thraupidae,

Facial and genital lesions in baboons (Papio anubis) of Kibale National Park, Uganda.

We describe and document with digital images two adult male baboons (Papio anubis) from the Kibale National Park, Uganda who were infected with some kind of disease having clinical signs suggestive of Treponema pallidum. One of these males was missing his premaxilla, part of the maxilla, upper incisors, canines, and possibly the first premolars. The condition of his scrotum was not seen. The other adult male had prominent inflammation of his scrotum and, to a lesser extent, his penis. Otherwise, both males appeared normal and healthy and were apparently well integrated into the same social gro

Hiker Fatality From Severe Hyponatremia in Grand Canyon National Park.

We present the case of a hiker who died of severe hyponatremia at Grand Canyon National Park. The woman collapsed on the rim shortly after finishing a 5-hour hike into the Canyon during which she was reported to have consumed large quantities of water. First responders transported her to the nearest hospital. En route, she became unresponsive, and subsequent treatment included intravenous normal saline. Imaging and laboratory data at the hospital confirmed hypervolemic hyponatremia with encephalopathy. She never regained consciousness and died of severe cerebral edema less than 24 hours later.

Public parks and physical activity among adolescent girls.

OBJECTIVES: Physical activity may be constrained or facilitated by local environments. The availability of neighborhood facilities for physical activity may be particularly relevant for youth, who are unable to drive and whose activity is often limited to the immediate distance they are able to walk or bicycle. Several studies have shown that proximity to recreational facilities and parks is one of the most important predictors of physical activity. Because the United States already has an extensive infrastructure of parks, with 70% of adults indicating that they live within walking distance o

[Alveolar echinococcosis in a cynomolgus monkey].

Cysts of Echinococcus multilocularis were found in the massively enlarged liver of an 18 month old Crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis) at post mortem examination. The infection was diagnosed by macroscopic inspection, histological examination and the shape of the hooks of the protoscolices. This is the first description of a fox tapeworm infection in an Old World monkey. The animal had lived in a recreational park situated in an E. multilocularis endemic region. The special epidemiology of this case is discussed.

Blue-green spaces, heat stress, and health-supportive public-space use under urban stress: machine learning and SEM evidence from jogging flow in Fuzhou, China.

Urban blue-green spaces (BGS) are increasingly discussed in relation to health-oriented and resilience-oriented urban planning, particularly in high-density cities exposed to heat-related environmental stress. However, empirical evidence remains limited on how BGS and heat stress are associated with everyday public-space use. Using Fuzhou, China, as a case study, we integrated crowdsourced jogging data, BGS indicators, land surface temperature (LST), and urban development variables to analyze jogging flow as a behavioral proxy for health-supportive public-space use. Machine learning (ML) and s

First clinical cases of leishmaniosis in meerkats (Suricata suricatta) housed in wildlife parks in Madrid, Spain.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, cases of leishmaniosis have been described in animals housed in captivity in zoos in Spain [Bennett's wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus rufogriseus), orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus pygameus), and European otter (Lutra lutra)]. Some of these zoological parks are in endemic areas for both human and animal leishmaniosis, thus it should be very important to include this zoonosis in the differential diagnosis. METHODS: The study was carried out in two zoological parks in Madrid, Madrid Zoo and Faunia, and analyzed seven meerkats. Serological tests [rK-39 and enzyme-linked immun

A microbial safari: finding evidence of Mycobacterium bovis DNA in soil from the Kruger National Park, South Africa.

UNLABELLED: The primary pathogen causing animal tuberculosis (TB), Mycobacterium bovis, can infect a wide range of mammals, including humans. This pathogen is considered endemic in the Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa, where it threatens the health and conservation of African wildlife, including endangered species. This mycobacterial pathogen is spread through close contact with an infected host by aerosols or ingestion but may also be transmitted indirectly through the environment. Detecting environmental M. bovis is challenging due to the complexity of the sample matrix and may requi

Evolution and genetic characterization of Seoul virus in wild rats Rattus norvegicus from an urban park in Lyon, France 2020-2022.

BACKGROUND: Seoul virus (SEOV) is an orthohantavirus primarily carried by rats. In humans, it may cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). Its incidence is likely underestimated and given the expansion of urban areas, a better knowledge of SEOV circulation in rat populations is called for. Beyond the need to improve human case detection, we need to deepen our comprehension of the ecological, epidemiological, and evolutionary processes involved in the transmission of SEOV. METHODOLOGY / PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We performed a comprehensive serological and molecular characterization of SE

A genome-based investigation of the Priestia species isolated from anthrax endemic regions in Kruger National Park.

Priestia is a genus that was renamed from the genus Bacillus based on the conserved signature indels (CSIs) in protein sequences that separate Priestia species from Bacillus, with the latter only including species closely related to B. subtilis and B. cereus. Diagnosis of anthrax, a zoonotic disease, is implicated by tripartite anthrax virulence genes (lef, pagA, and cya) and poly-γ-D-glutamic acid capsular genes cap-ABCDE of Bacillus anthracis. Due to the amplification of anthrax virulence genes in Priestia isolates, the search for homologous anthrax virulence genes within the Priestia genome

Seroprevalence and Factors Associated with Scrub Typhus Infection among Forestry Workers in National Park Offices in South Korea.

Scrub typhus is caused by the arthropod-borne bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi and is an endemic infectious disease in the Asia-Pacific area. This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of scrub typhus and identify associated risk and protective factors among forestry workers, a neglected risk group for scrub typhus, in National Park Offices in South Korea. A nationwide cross-sectional serosurvey was carried out on 1945 National Park Office forestry workers (NPOFWs) in South Korea during December 2016. We visited 29 main offices and used a structured questionnaire to collect data regard

Plasmodium knowlesi and other malaria parasites in long-tailed macaques from the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Macaca fascicularis (long-tailed macaque) is the most widespread species of macaque in Southeast Asia and the only species of monkey found naturally in the Philippines. The species is the natural host for the zoonotic malaria species, Plasmodium knowlesi and Plasmodium cynomolgi and for the potentially zoonotic species, Plasmodium inui. Moreover, other Plasmodium species such as Plasmodium coatneyi and Plasmodium fieldi are also natural parasites of M. fascicularis. The aims of this study were to identify and determine the prevalence of Plasmodium species infecting wild and captive

Enhancement of Risk for Lyme Disease by Landscape Connectivity, New York, New York, USA.

Most tickborne disease studies in the United States are conducted in low-intensity residential development and forested areas, leaving much unknown about urban infection risks. To understand Lyme disease risk in New York, New York, USA, we conducted tick surveys in 24 parks throughout all 5 boroughs and assessed how park connectivity and landscape composition contribute to Ixodes scapularis tick nymphal densities and Borrelia burgdorferi infection. We used circuit theory models to determine how parks differentially maintain landscape connectivity for white-tailed deer, the reproductive host fo

Outbreak of gastroenteritis associated with an interactive water fountain at a beachside park--Florida, 1999.

Since 1989, approximately 170 outbreaks associated with recreational water venues (e.g., swimming pools, waterparks, fountains, hot tubs and spas, lakes, rivers, and oceans) have been reported, with almost half resulting in gastrointestinal illness (1-5). This report summarizes the investigation of an outbreak of gastroenteritis in Florida during 1999. The findings indicated that Shigella sonnei and Cryptosporidium parvum infections caused illness in persons exposed to an "interactive" water fountain at a beachside park.

Emerging Human Babesiosis with "Ground Zero" in North America.

The first case of human babesiosis was reported in the literature in 1957. The clinical disease has sporadically occurred as rare case reports in North America and Europe in the subsequent decades. Since the new millennium, especially in the last decade, many more cases have apparently appeared not only in these regions but also in Asia, South America, and Africa. More than 20,000 cases of human babesiosis have been reported in North America alone. In several cross-sectional surveys, exposure to Babesia spp. has been demonstrated within urban and rural human populations with clinical babesiosi

Streetview greenspace types and dementia risk in older adults: the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.

Greenspace has been associated with lower dementia risk, but most studies have used satellite-derived measures that cannot distinguish vegetation types. We used streetview (SV)-based metrics of greenspace from an on-the-ground perspective to examine greenspace types that may be relevant for dementia risk. We followed 6761 participants from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, 2000-2018. Using deep learning algorithms applied to SV images, we measured %trees, %grass, %other green (plants/flowers/fields) in the 500 m area around participants' residences. We examined the controlled direct e

Attaining neurodevelopmental milestones and exposures to fine particulate matter and environmental green spaces.

BACKGROUND: Early-life environmental exposures may influence infant neurodevelopment. We examined associations between perinatal air pollution, green space exposure, and milestone attainment during the first two years. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal population study of Flemish children born in 2018, using well-baby clinic data (n = 46,584). Outcomes were delay of six milestones within predefined windows assessed using the Dutch version of the Denver Developmental Screener, and the exact age at two milestones. Municipality-level PM2.5, PM10, and green space were assigned. Associations per

Seasonal green space, air pollution, and temperature in the United States: Spatial disparities among people with disabilities.

This paper advances research on environmental justice through analysis of multiple concurrent environmental exposures (green space, air pollution, temperature) among overlooked marginalized populations (people with disabilities) during both summer and winter seasons in the year 2021. To date, environmental justice research and policy in the United States and other parts of the world have traditionally focused on how low-income communities and racialized minorities navigate higher levels of environmental hazards, and the adverse consequences to health and quality of life. Much less attention ha

Citywide park renovations and changes in perceived stress: a quasi-experimental study among low-income communities in New York City.

BACKGROUND: Quality parks have the potential to promote well-being and health equity in urban communities through reduced stress, yet high-quality epidemiological evidence is limited. This quasi-experimental study measured associations between park renovation and changes in perceived stress among low-income adults in New York City. METHODS: Pre- and post-renovation data on the Perceived Stress Scale and park use from 162 adults living near (< 0.3 miles) 31 renovated parks and 151 adults living near 21 sociodemographically matched control parks were analyzed. Exposure-response functions of the correlated environmental exposures green space, noise, and air pollution for quantifying mortality burden in health impact assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Environmental health impact assessments (HIA)on green space, air pollution (fine particulate matter (PM2.5) or nitrogen dioxide (NO2)), and noise use exposure-response functions (ERF) based on single-exposure models from epidemiological studies, not accounting for potential confounding by other commonly correlated exposures. We assessed differences in ERFs between single- and multi-exposure models for calculation of joint health impacts in HIA. METHODS: We systematically searched cohort studies that reported both single- and multi-exposure models for associations of long-term expos
