Clear cell tumors of parotid gland encompass a wide spectrum of neoplasms, including benign and malignant epithelial neoplasms. Additionally, tumors from adjacent structures such as paraganglioma, and metastatic neoplasms may also show clear cells. Overlapping cytological features may cause difficulty in diagnosis. This 50-year-old female presented with inability to close the right eye for 4 years, and with an infra-auricular swelling. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) done outside was submitted for review with a diagnosis of neuroendocrine tumor. Smears showed clusters of tumor cells wit

Benign tumours account for approximately 60-80% of parotid neoplasms and among these, Warthin's tumour is the second most common benign neoplasm accounting for approximately 15% of all parotid epithelial tumours. The medical records of 100 consecutive patients with Warthin's tumour of the parotid gland admitted for treatment at the Department of Head and Neck Surgery and Otorhinolaryngology, Hospital A.C. Camargo, São Paulo, Brazil, between 1983 and 2011 were retrospectively analyzed. The surgical procedures included 104 (96%) subtotal parotidectomies and 4 (3.7%) total parotidectomies. One hu…

This case report details the findings of a metastatic adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland, a rare neoplasm in horses with limited treatment options. A 12-year-old, Criollo breed, gelding was presented with an enlarged left parotid gland that had been previously treated for 6 months without response to treatment. Based on the results of the diagnostic procedures performed, the horse underwent a total sialadenectomy and died of hypovolemic shock in the recovery room. Post-mortem examination revealed metastatic neoplastic infiltration of the submandibular lymph nodes and the lymphatic network at

Lipomas are common soft tissue neoplasms; however, they are found rarely in the parotid gland region. The purpose of this study was to analyze the diagnostic challenges of this rare condition. We performed a retrospective analysis of 11 patients with parotid lipomas, treated from November 2009 to February 2014. The mean age at diagnosis was 46.6 ± 2.9 years, and the study population included 8 males and 3 females. Computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed in radiological diagnosis. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) was performed in all cases (including two time

BACKGROUND/AIM: The parotid is the largest salivary gland and is located anteriorly to the sternocleidomastoid muscle and laterally to the ramus of the mandible. Neoplasms in this gland are relatively rare, with 80% being benign and 20% malignant, primarily represented by mucoepidermoid carcinoma. In the head and neck region, lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) accounts for 0.4% of malignant salivary gland tumors.
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old man with no previous comorbidities was admitted to a Head and Neck Surgery Specialty Service for a painless right cervical mass of uncertain growth. Extensiv

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Salivary gland neoplasms, comprising 2-6.5% of head and neck tumors, primarily arise in the parotid and submandibular glands. Salivary gland cystic lesions can be either neoplastic or non-neoplastic.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: This is a 50-year-old male with a cystic adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) in the parotid gland, presenting with a right infraauricular swelling that had progressively enlarged over three years. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) indicated a benign cystic neoplasm. Histological examination, however, confirmed ACC with cystic changes.

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland agenesis is a rare, congenital, usually asymptomatic disorder. Until now, only 24 cases with unilateral, incidentally found, parotid gland agenesis have been described. Here, we present the first reported case of an ipsilateral preauricular neoplasm in a patient with unilateral parotid gland agenesis. During surgery, the position of the greater auricular- and facial nerves was documented. Furthermore, we performed the first sialendoscopy for this rare disorder to assess the number of duct branches, which might be indicative of the abundance of parotid tissue. Moreover

A parotid neoplasm is an uncommon condition that only accounts for less than 3% of all head and neck cancers, and they make up less than 0.3% of all new cancers diagnosed annually. Due to their nonspecific imaging features and heterogeneous nature, accurate preoperative diagnosis remains a challenge. Automatic parotid tumor segmentation may help physicians evaluate these tumors. Two hundred eighty-five patients diagnosed with benign or malignant parotid tumors were enrolled in this study. Parotid and tumor tissues were segmented by 3 radiologists on T1-weighted (T1w), T2-weighted (T2w) and T1-

Since lipomas are common soft-tissue neoplasms in other regions of the body, they are found only rarely in the parotid gland and are, therefore, often not considered in the initial differential diagnosis of parotid gland tumours. Even rarer are lipomas arising in the deep lobe of the parotid gland with only 6 cases presented in the literature. Lipomas originating in the parapharyngeal space are also extremely rare. When there is any suspicion, computed tomography and especially magnetic resonance imaging are of high diagnostic value. Fine-needle aspiration cytology seems not to contribute much

The parapharyngeal space is a complex anatomical area, which can give rise to a variety of both primary and metastatic neoplasms. We present an unusual case of metastatic adenocarcinoma of the breast, masquerading as a deep lobe parotid neoplasm, 15 years after the primary presentation. Metastatic breast carcinoma has been previously reported at other sites in the head and neck but this is the first report of metastases in the parapharyngeal space with an oropharyngeal presentation.

Solitary fibrous tumors are benign spindle-cell neoplasms, mostly originating from the visceral pleura. They are common in individuals aged 20-70 with no sex predilection. To our knowledge, this is the unique case of the solitary fibrous tumor originating from the accessory parotid gland in the literature.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) arising in the salivary glands is a rare tumor. It is a low-grade malignant salivary gland tumor. It is predominantly seen in females and occurs in the fifth and sixth decades of life. It is mostly located in the parotid gland. ACC has a significant potential for recurrence and metastasis. Therefore, long-term follow-up is necessary after treatment. Here, a 28-year-old male presented with right preauricular swelling for 9 months. Ultrasound of the head-and-neck region and fine-needle aspiration cytology of preauricular swelling suggest the diagnosis of neoplasm in t

OBJECTIVE: The current study presents our experience with accessory parotid gland masses and reviews the literature on accessory parotid tumor incidence and surgical management. Based on our results, we advocate a standard parotidectomy approach with routine facial nerve dissection at the time of excision.
STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective chart review and comprehensive literature review on incidence of accessory parotid gland neoplasms.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all patients with mid-cheek masses treated by the senior author was conducted from January 2003 to January

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm arising from follicular dendritic cells (FDC) of lymphoid follicles. While the majority of FDC sarcoma cases arise within lymph nodes, approximately 30% manifest in extranodal sites. Only 4 prior occurrences of intra-parotid FDC sarcomas have been documented. We are reporting a rare case of FDC of the parotid gland in a 65-year-old male with a questionable history of B-cell lymphoma. The patient underwent a right total parotidectomy and bilateral neck dissection. A diagnosis of follicular dendritic cell (FDC) sarcoma was made, wi

The authors investigated the clinicopathological characteristics of keratocystoma of the parotid gland. Two cases of parotid gland keratocystoma in the files of Nanjing Stomatological Hospital were analysed. These slowly growing parotid gland tumours occurred in two women aged 29 and 49 years. The cut surface showed multilocular cystic lesions filled with keratin materials. Histologically, there were multi-cystic spaces and solid epithelium islands, containing keratinized lamellae. Without cytological atypia, the lining stratified squamous epithelium showed apparent keratinization through an o

Patients with either benign or malignant parotid neoplasm are candidates for surgery, but patients with benign lymphoepithelial lesions of the parotid gland or Sjögren's syndrome do not necessarily require surgical treatment. However, the diagnosis of benign lymphoepithelial lesion of the parotid prior to surgery is challenging. In this case series, we retrospectively analyzed the records of 11 patients presented between January 2006 and August 2007, with a solitary parotid mass diagnosed post-operatively as benign lymphoepithelial lesion or Sjögren's syndrome. Our analysis suggested that find

Basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCA) is an uncommon salivary gland neoplasm. The majority of salivary gland tumors are located in the parotid gland, while only a few involves the minor salivary gland of the oral cavity. Pathological diagnosis is important to differentiate BCA from other neoplasms, as the prognosis of the diseases is significantly different. In this article, we present a 41-year-old-male with BCA involving the upper labial mucosa.

Parotid malignancy may occur as a primary neoplasm of the salivary tissue or as metastatic involvement of the parotid lymph nodes. Primary tumors of squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma involving the skin of the head and neck have the potential to spread to lymph nodes of the parotid gland. Metastatic malignant melanoma to the back was exceptionally rare and no such reports have been noted in the literature. We reported an exceptional case of intraparotid lymph nodes metastasis of the right scalp junctional nevus with malignant transformation to malignant melanoma in a 48-year-old ma

OBJECTIVES: As an uncommon neoplasm, parotid non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) comprises mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) and non-MALT lymphomas. Both types of lymphoma vary in prognosis and treatment. The aim of this study was to explore CT and MRI characteristics of these two types of lymphoma.
METHODS: 61 cases of parotid NHL, 34 MALT and 27 non-MALT lymphomas with histopathological confirmation were examined with routine CT and MR scans prior to treatment, and retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: On CT and MRI, 34 MALT lymphomas presented with 11 solid and 23 solid-cystic forms, whereas 2
