Primary malignant melanoma of the parotid gland, a rare case arising from a duct: a case report and literature review.

Malignant melanoma of the parotid gland is an unusual tumor in the head and neck region, and most parotid melanoma is reported as a metastatic lesion of cutaneous malignant melanoma. We report a case of primary malignant melanoma arising in the parotid gland duct with diagnostic challenge. The patient was a 68-year-old man who complained of repeated right facial swelling that presented 3 months prior. Swelling was detected along the Stensen's duct of the cheek, and brown-colored saliva-like fluid was aspirated. On MR and CT images, a fluid-filled duct with small nodule and heterogeneously enha

Pneumoparotid: A Rare Consequence of Being a Saxophonist.

A teenage girl who had recently begun playing saxophone presented with recurrent painless right cheek swelling for six months. Despite several courses of antibiotics, the swelling continued to re-occur. On examination, enlargement of the right parotid gland and crepitus over the same region are noted, with no signs of acute inflammation. Ultrasound examination of the right parotid gland revealed linear areas of increased echogenicity with equivocal posterior shadowing. Computed tomography (CT) showed enlargement of the right parotid gland with numerous gas bubbles in Stensen's duct and their b

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland: Anastamosis of the facial nerve with the great auricular nerve after radical parotidectomy.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland is a rare and slowly growing, but highly malignant tumor. Surgical resection of a malignant parotid tumor should include resection of the facial nerve when the nerve is involved in the tumor. Facial nerve reconstruction is required after nerve resection. A 14 year-old female presented with complaints of painless enlargement of the right parotid gland and facial asymmetry. Physical examination revealed a firm mass in the region of the parotid gland as well as right facial paralysis. Biopsy obtained from the mass showed an adenoid cystic carcinoma of

Hybrid carcinoma of the parotid gland: ductal carcinoma and myoepithelial carcinoma.

Hybrid carcinomas are rare neoplasms which are characterized by two different types of tumors localized in a single topographic region of the lesion. Parotid gland is the most common involvement site of hybrid carcinomas among salivary glands. The aggressiveness of the hybrid tumor depends on its high-grade component. In this article, we present a 71-year-old male case with the left parotid gland hybrid carcinoma consisting of salivary duct carcinoma and myoepithelial carcinoma.

Non-tuberculous mycobacterial infection of the parotid gland in an immunosuppressed adult.

Infections of the parotid gland with non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are rarely described. Here, we report on an infection of the parotid gland caused by Mycobacterium avium and give a literature-based overview about this entity. In the light of a global increase of mycobacterial infections, unusual manifestations have to be considered and should be included in the differential diagnosis when dealing with solid lesions of uncertain aetiology in the head and neck region.

Secondary malignant tumors of the parotid gland: not a secondary problem!

PURPOSE: To present the clinical features of patients with parotid gland metastasis, and compare the results with previously published series. Most of the relevant literature arises from case reports, while there are only few series reported, as secondary neoplastic lesions of the parotid gland are uncommon. METHODS: The medical records of patients with parotid gland metastasis, treated at the ENT Department of the University Hospital of Ferrara, between January 1st 1965 and December 31th 2014, were retrospectively reviewed. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and biopsy results were compa

First bite syndrome: a complication of surgery involving the parapharyngeal space.

INTRODUCTION: First bite syndrome (FBS) is the development of pain in the parotid region after the first bite of each meal and can be seen after surgery of the parapharyngeal space. The cause is not clear but has been proposed to involve a loss of sympathetic nerve function to the parotid, causing a denervation supersensitivity of salivary gland myoepithelial cells. The purpose of this study was to review the records of 12 patients with FBS to determine any common features of the operations performed that would support this theory of parotid "sympathectomy" as an etiologic factor of FBS. METH…

A giant sarcoma of the parotid gland: a case report and review of the literature.

CASE REPORT: Primary low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is an extremely rare tumour of the salivary glands and arises from undifferentiated pluripotential mesenchymal cells. We report a case of a huge (17 x ll x 10 cm) primary LGFMS of the parotid gland of a 57-year-old woman. Clinically, a 12x8 cm firm, non-tender, left parotid mass was observed, facial nerve function was not impaired and no enlarged lymph nodules were palpated on the neck. A contrast axial CT scan showed intense enhancement of the enlarged left parotid gland. The fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) was compatible with sa

Peroxisomes Are Highly Abundant and Heterogeneous in Human Parotid Glands.

The parotid gland is one of the major salivary glands producing a serous secretion, and it plays an essential role in the digestive and immune systems. Knowledge of peroxisomes in the human parotid gland is minimal; furthermore, the peroxisomal compartment and its enzyme composition in the different cell types of the human parotid gland have never been subjected to a detailed investigation. Therefore, we performed a comprehensive analysis of peroxisomes in the human parotid gland's striated duct and acinar cells. We combined biochemical techniques with various light and electron microscopy tec

Infantile Parotid Hemangioma With Diagnostic Dilemma: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland tumors are uncommon in children; hemangiomas are one of them. We report a case of infantile hemangioma of the parotid gland which posed a diagnostic dilemma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four-month-old infant presented with swelling at the parotid gland region, which was progressively increasing. There was a diagnostic dilemma with initial misdiagnosis as acute parotitis. Imaging studies with ultrasonography and CT with contrast were requested. RESULTS: Imaging studies revealed hyperintense lobulated mass suggestive of parotid hemangioma. Vascular consultation recommend

Giant sialocele following facial trauma.

Injuries in the parotid and masseter region can cause serious impairment secondary to damage of important anatomical structures. Sialocele is observed as facial swelling associated with parotid duct rupture due to trauma. The aim of this paper is to report a case of a giant traumatic sialocele in the parotid gland, secondary to a knife lesion in a 40-year-old woman. Conservative measures could not promote clinical resolution and a surgical intervention for the placement of a vacuum drain was selected. Under local anesthesia, a small incision was performed adjacent to parotid duct papilla, foll

Videoendoscopic rehabilitation of iatrogenous Stensen-duct-acquired atresia in a patient with ring chromosome 21 syndrome and drooling.

Drooling generally arises as a result of neurologic or muscular impairments, especially in subjects affected by cerebral palsies. It has never previously been described in patients with ring chromosome 21 syndrome. We describe the video-assisted surgical rehabilitation of the left parotid duct in a child with ring chromosome 21 syndrome and a persistent and painful swelling of the left parotid region after the surgical ligation of the Stensen ducts because of drooling. The diagnosis of Stensen duct dilatation as a result of iatrogenous complete distal acquired atresia was made by means of clin…

Anatomical Landmarks of the Facial Artery and Vein for Intraoral Anastomosis: A Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: Intraoral anastomosis is a widely used technique for microvascular alveolar ridge augmentation and midface reconstruction. However, the predictable anatomical positioning of facial structures, such as the vessels, parotid duct, and facial nerve in the buccal region, has remained unclear. Therefore, we aimed to obtain the anatomical characteristics of these locations to establish surgical landmarks for the intraoral anastomosis of facial vessels. METHODS: A total of 26 sides from 13 formaldehyde-fixed cadavers approximately a month after fixation with a mean age at death of 86.6 ±

A Model of Ca 2 + Dynamics in an Accurate Reconstruction of Parotid Acinar Cells.

We have constructed a spatiotemporal model of Ca 2 + dynamics in parotid acinar cells, based on new data about the distribution of inositol trisphophate receptors (IPR). The model is solved numerically on a mesh reconstructed from images of a cluster of parotid acinar cells. In contrast to our earlier model (Sneyd et al. in J Theor Biol 419:383-393. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jtbi.2016.04.030 , 2017b), which cannot generate realistic Ca 2 + oscillations with the new data on IPR distribution, our new model reproduces the Ca 2 + dynamics observed in parotid acinar cells. Solitary fibrous tumor of the parotid gland: Case report.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle cell neoplasm that usually develops in the pleura and peritoneum. The head and neck region is involved in only 6% of the cases. Involvement of the parotid gland is a rare phenomenon, with only 24 cases reported in the literature. The aim of this study is to report an additional case of SFT affecting the parotid gland, and to review the literature on previously reported cases. The patient was a 42-year-old male with a 4-cm, fibro-elastic, movable, painless nodule in the inferior lobe of the parotid gland. The lesion was surgically excised and, foll

Elective parotidectomy and neck dissection are not beneficial in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head.

OBJECTIVE: Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma (cSCC), a tumor with a significantly increasing incidence, is mostly diagnosed in the head region, where tumors have a worse prognosis and a higher risk of metastases. The presence of metastases reduces specific five-year survival from 99% to 50%. As the risk of occult metastases does not exceed 10%, elective dissection of the tributary parotid and neck lymph nodes is not recommended. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a group of 12 patients with cSCC of the head after elective dissections of regional (parotid and cervical) nodes by means of supe
