Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration: patient satisfaction under light conscious sedation.

BACKGROUND: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is an increasingly used mediastinal sampling technique. Many centres use conscious sedation in an ambulatory setting to optimise the flow of patients, save costs and shorten recovery time. The only EBUS-TBNA patient satisfaction study published so far used deep conscious sedation with propofol. To our knowledge, ours is the largest prospective study evaluating the experience of patients undergoing EBUS-TBNA using light conscious sedation without propofol. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the patient tolerability o…

Telephone follow-up for the management of thyrotoxicosis: a patient satisfaction survey.

We conducted a postal survey to assess patient satisfaction with our use of telephone follow-up for the management of thyrotoxicosis. Patients were asked to answer nine questions using the five-point Likert scale. They could also make comments and suggestions for improvement. Over a 17-month period, 135 patients with thyrotoxicosis were followed up by telephone (32 males and 103 females, aged 17-85 years). Eighty-two completed questionnaires were returned (61% response rate). More than 90% of responders strongly agreed or agreed that they were comfortable with telephone follow-up, that it save…

Satisfaction and performance in patient selected goals after grip reconstruction in tetraplegia.

Reconstruction of grip in tetraplegia aims to improve upper extremity performance and control in daily life. We evaluated the effects of surgery and rehabilitation on performance and satisfaction of patient identified activity goals in 20 patients (22 arms) who had grip reconstructions for both finger and thumb flexion. Patients assessed an improvement in both performance and satisfaction after surgery in all groups of activities assessed using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). The mean improvement at 6 and 12 months was 3.5 points better than the 2.5 points before surgery.

Pseudogynecomastia after massive weight loss: detectability of technique, patient satisfaction, and classification.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of male patients are presenting for treatment of male chest deformity after massive weight loss. The authors prefer to preserve the nipple-areola complex on a dermoglandular pedicle. They sought to identify detectability of technique, assess patient satisfaction, and outline a treatment algorithm for this population. METHODS: Ten male massive weight loss patients underwent chest-contouring procedures over a period of 6 years and were surveyed to identify satisfaction with reconstruction. Preoperative photographs were used to devise a classification system. Twe…

Patient satisfaction after carotid endarterectomy using a selective policy of local anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Patient satisfaction after carotid endarterectomy has not been specifically studied or reported. Results of carotid endarterectomy using either local or general anesthesia have been widely reported, and outcomes are not significantly different for either technique. Patient satisfaction data were obtained in order to determine whether patients preferred one method of anesthesia over another. Data regarding outcome may be added to the surgical literature as benchmark data when comparing operative carotid endarterectomy to newer techniques. METHODS: During a 30-month period, 186 cons…
