The discovery of H. pylori infection and the recognition of its effects on gastric physiology has significantly advanced our understanding of the pathophysiology of ulcer disease, In DU patients H. pylori gastritis is mainly confined to the antral mucosa. It stimulates increased release of gastrin by the antral mucosa and this is accompanied by high acid output by the oxyntic mucosa. This high acid response to gastrin stimulation by the oxyntic mucosa in DU patients is due to the combination of a high parietal cell mass and the fact that the function of these parietal cells is not impaired by

Visual hallucinations are prevalent, potentially disabling symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. Multiple impairments in bottom-up sensory processing and top-down perceptual modulation are implicated in the pathophysiology of these phenomena. In healthy individuals, visual illusions are elicited by illusory figures through parametric manipulations of geometrical configurations, contrast, color, or spatial relationships between stimuli. These illusory percepts provide insight on the physiologic processes subserving conscious and unconscious perception. In this exploratory, cross-sectional, controlle

The management of acute coronary syndromes remains largely grounded in the ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)/non-STEMI (NSTEMI) classification, a binary framework that assigns a central role to ST-segment elevation in guiding urgent revascularization. However, a substantial proportion of patients classified as NSTEMI may harbor an acute coronary occlusion, with consequent risk of delayed recognition and adverse clinical outcomes. This review focuses on how the suspicion of acute occlusive myocardial infarction (OMI) can be confirmed in the absence of traditional STEMI criteria. Emphas

BACKGROUND: Facial mimicry is crucial in the recognition of others' emotional state. Thus, the observation of others' facial expressions activates the same neural representation of that affective state in the observer, along with related autonomic and somatic responses. What happens, therefore, when someone cannot mimic others' facial expressions?
METHODS: We investigated whether psychophysiological emotional responses to others' facial expressions were impaired in 13 children (9 years) with Moebius syndrome (MBS), an extremely rare neurological disorder (1/250,000 live births) characterized

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were measured using sinusoidal amplitude modulation (AM) tones. When one of the primary stimuli (f(1) or f(2), f(1) < f(2)) was amplitude modulated, a series of changes in the cubic difference tone (CDT) were observed. In the frequency domain, multiple sidebands were present around the CDT and their sizes grew with the modulation depth of the AM stimulus. In the time domain, the CDT showed different modulation patterns between two major signal conditions: the AM tone was used as the f(1) or the f(2). The CDT amplitude followed the AM tone when

This brief review has attempted to portray the complex involvement of prolactin in pregnancy. Pituitary prolactin production and lactotroph proliferation are markedly affected by oestrogens and pregnancy. Enlargement of pre-existing prolactinomas may occur during pregnancy induced with dopamine agonist drugs, and this can be a major clinical problem with larger tumours. Prolactin is produced by late luteal and decidualized endometrium as well as by the pituitary gland, but much less is known about its secretory regulation or its function. The family of prolactin-related protein hormones is rap

When we direct attentional resources to a certain point in time, expectation and preparedness is heightened and behavior is, as a result, more efficient. This future-oriented attending can be guided either voluntarily, by externally defined cues, or implicitly, by perceived temporal regularities. Inspired by dynamic attending theory, our aim was to study the extent to which metrical structure, with its beats of greater or lesser relative strength, modulates attention implicitly over time and to uncover the neural circuits underlying this process of dynamic attending. We used fMRI to investigat

Olfactory dysfunction is common in subjects with Parkinson's disease. The pathophysiology of such dysfunction, however, remains poorly understood. Neurodegeneration within central regions involved in odour perception may contribute to olfactory dysfunction in Parkinson's disease. Central cholinergic deficits occur in Parkinson's disease and cholinergic neurons innervate regions, such as the limbic archicortex, involved in odour perception. We investigated the relationship between performance on an odour identification task and forebrain cholinergic denervation in Parkinson's disease subjects w

We aimed to assess whether speech recognition scores (SRS) are predictive of outcomes in patients with small vestibular schwannoma (VS) undergoing observation. Ninety-five patients with VS whose initial management was observation with serial imaging were retrospectively analysed. Patients were divided into groups according to their average hearing level and SRS at diagnosis. About 60% of patients had good initial SRS (GIS) and 40% had poor initial SRS (PIS). Mean follow-up was 44 months, during which time data were collected regarding hearing level, tumour growth and the eventual management op

The use of continuous intrapartum electronic fetal heart rate monitoring (EFM) using a cardiotocograph (CTG) was developed to enable obstetricians and midwives to analyse the changes of fetal heart rate during labour so as to institute timely intervention to avoid intrapartum hypoxic-ischaemic injury. Although CTG was initially developed as a screening tool to predict fetal hypoxia, its positive predictive value for intrapartum fetal hypoxia is approximately only 30%. Even though different international classifications have been developed with the aim of defining combinations of features that

BACKGROUND: Impaired face emotion recognition (FER) and abnormal motion processing are core features in schizophrenia (SZ) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that have been linked to atypical activity within the visual cortex. Despite overlaps, only a few studies have directly explored convergent versus divergent neural mechanisms of altered visual processing in ASD and SZ. We employed a multimodal imaging approach to evaluate FER and motion perception in relation to functioning of subcortical and cortical visual regions.
METHODS: Subjects were 20 high-functioning adults with ASD, 19 patients

UNLABELLED: Hepatic innate immune cells, in particular, interstitial dendritic cells (DCs), regulate inflammatory responses and may promote inherent liver tolerogenicity. After tissue injury, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is released and acts as a damage-associated molecular pattern that activates innate immune cells by pattern recognition receptors. CD39 (ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase-1) rapidly hydrolyzes extracellular ATP to maintain physiological levels. We hypothesized that CD39 expression on liver DCs might contribute to regulation of their innate immune functions. Mouse

Post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) affect millions of people worldwide and are increasingly recognized as a disorder of failed innate immune resolution rather than a persistent viral infection. Emerging evidence shows that residual SARS-CoV-2 antigens, host-derived alarmins, reactivated latent viruses, and mucosal microbiome-derived products from oral-nasopharyngeal and gut reservoirs sustain the chronic activation of pattern-recognition receptors, inflammasomes, and complement pathways. In parallel, deficits in specialized pro-resolving mediators, impaired efferocytosis, and persistent ti

Traditionally recognized as "cellular powerhouses", mitochondria have gained relevance as pivotal nodes in the integration of metabolism, stress signaling, and innate immunity. In this context, the present work seeks to answer the following question: Does the continuous, exercise-induced mitochondrial stress contribute towards training of innate immune cells by promoting the generation of DAMPs such as mtDNA and succinate? Exercise can be considered as a form of controllable mitochondrial stressor. Mechanistically, the temporary release of mtDAMPs through exercise results in activation of patt

The small intestinal epithelial barrier inputs signals from the gut microbiota in order to balance physiological inflammation and tolerance, and to promote homeostasis. Understanding the dynamic relationship between microbes and intestinal epithelial cells has been a challenge given the cellular heterogeneity associated with the epithelium and the inherent difficulty of isolating and identifying individual cell types. Here, we used single-cell RNA sequencing of small intestinal epithelial cells from germ-free and specific pathogen-free mice to study microbe-epithelium crosstalk at the single-c

The retinoic acid-inducible gene-I (RIG-I)-like helicases (RLH)s are cytoplasmic pattern recognition receptors expressed in both immune and non-immune cells that are essential for detection of intracellular RNA products, primarily of viral origin. Upon binding to viral RNA, RLHs interact with mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein (MAVS) to activate interferon (IFN)-mediated antiviral responses. The RLH/MAVS signaling pathway is regulated by ubiquitination/deubiquitination, in which several ubiquitin-editing proteins play critical roles. The really interesting new gene (RING) finger protein

The identification of protective helminth antigens remains the most important challenge in the development of parasitic vaccines. To identify protective antigens of Ostertagia ostertagi, an important abomasal parasite of cattle, parasite-specific local antibodies from the abomasal mucus and from the draining lymph nodes were collected from calves immunized with multiple infections and from 'primary infected' animals. With these probes, Western blots of extracts and excretion/ secretion (E/S) material from L3, L4 and adult life-stages as well as cDNA expression libraries were screened to identi

Diazepam binding inhibitor (DBI), an endogenous 10-kDa polypeptide was isolated from rat and human brain by monitoring displacement of radioactive diazepam bound to specific recognition sites in brain synaptic and mitochondrial membranes. The cellular location of DBI mRNA was studied in rat brain and selected peripheral tissues by in situ hybridization histochemistry with a 35S-labeled single-stranded complementary RNA probe. DBI mRNA was heterogeneously distributed in rat brain, with particularly high levels in the area postrema, the cerebellar cortex, and ependyma of the third ventricle. Int

BACKGROUND: The Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv and BCG effects on the host cell transcriptional profile consider a main research point. In the present study the transcriptome profiling analysis of RAW264.7 either infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv or BCG have been reported using Solexa/Illumina digital gene expression (DGE).
RESULTS: The DGE analysis showed 1,917 different expressed genes between the BCG and H37Rv group. In addition, approximately 5% of the transcripts appeared to be predicted genes that have never been described before. KEGG Orthology (KO) annotations showed mo

Chronic pain is highly prevalent in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) and further degrades the quality of life in individuals already struggling with somatic, motor, and autonomic deficits. The management of SCI pain is challenging, mainly due to the lack of reliable, FDA-approved diagnostics, effective therapies, and incomplete understanding of the underlying mechanisms. These limitations have led to increased efforts dedicated to the identification of objective pain biomarkers. However, the FDA has yet to approve a physiologically relevant biomarker for the assessment of pain in populat
