It is widely assumed that attention for peripheral visual information is reduced, especially when such information competes with information closer to the fovea. However, existing evidence for such a peripheral attention deficit has suffered from several confounds. Here we reinvestigated how stimuli presented at different eccentricities compete for attention. Human observers saw two equally relevant orientations (Experiment 1) or colors (Experiment 2), presented at close and far eccentricities. The two patterns were presented sequentially (thus competing little for attention), or simultaneousl

Naturalistic scenes are of key interest for visual perception, but controlling their perceptual and semantic properties is challenging. Previous work on naturalistic scenes has frequently focused on collections of discrete images with considerable physical differences between stimuli. However, it is often desirable to assess representations of naturalistic images that vary along a continuum. Traditionally, perceptually continuous variations of naturalistic stimuli have been obtained by morphing a source image into a target image. This produces transitions driven mainly by low-level physical fe

Object recognition and object identification are multifaceted cognitive operations that require various brain regions to synthesize and process information. Prior research has evidenced the activity of both visual and temporal cortices during these tasks. Notwithstanding their similarities, object recognition and identification are recognized as separate brain functions. Drawing from the two-stream hypothesis, our investigation aims to understand whether the channels within the ventral and dorsal streams contain pertinent information for effective model learning regarding object recognition an

Radial frequency (RF) patterns, created by sinusoidal modulations of a circle's radius, are processed globally when RF is low. These closed shapes therefore offer a useful way to interrogate the human visual system for global processing of curvature. RF patterns elicit greater responses than those to radial gratings in V4 and more anterior face-selective regions of the ventral visual pathway. This is largely consistent with work on nonhuman primates showing curvature processing emerges in V4, but is evident also higher up the ventral visual stream. Rather than contrasting RF patterns with othe

INTRODUCTION: The object recognition system involves both selectivity to specific object category and invariance to changes in low-level visual features. Mounting neuroimaging evidence supports that brain areas in the ventral temporal cortex, such as the FFA and PPA, respond preferentially to faces and houses, respectively. However, how regions in human ventral temporal cortex partitioned and functionally organized to selectively and invariantly respond to different object categories remains unclear. What are the changes of response properties at the intersection of adjacent but distinctively-

Previous studies demonstrated that a region in the left fusiform gyrus, often referred to as the 'visual word form area' (VWFA), is responsive to written words, but the precise functional role of VWFA remains unclear. In the present study, we investigated the influence of orthographic similarity, and lexical factors on the multivoxel response patterns to written stimuli. Using high-resolution fMRI at 7 T, we compared the organization of visual word representations in VWFA to the organization in early visual cortex and a language region in the superior temporal gyrus. Sets of four letter words

We reported double-dissociation between the visual processing of the edges and the surfaces of objects. Patients with lateral occipital damage showed selective impairment in the perception of edges whereas those with medial ventral occipital damage showed selective impairment in the perception of the 3D structure of the surface. Patients with medial ventral occipital damage also exhibited impaired perception of color, which is also a surface property. Those results were consistent with those from neuroimaging studies. Taken together, those studies suggest that objects may be processed in two s

This study was concerned with what stimulus information observers use to judge the shape of simple objects. We used a string of four Gabor patches to define a contour. A fifth, center patch served as a test pattern. The observers' task was to judge the location of the test pattern relative to the contour. The contour was either a straight line, or an arc with positive or negative curvature (the radius of curvature was either 2 or 6 deg). We asked whether phase shifts in the inner or outer pairs of patches distributed along the contour influence the perceived shape. That is, we measured the pha

In two studies, we compared the size of the spatial discrepancies made by young, good and poor readers when locating patterns in space. In the first study, each child was asked to point to the location of a briefly displayed pattern in a 7 x 7 matrix, and the discrepancy between the target's location and the child's response was recorded. The pattern was either a shape or a letter, and the target appeared at nine distances from the middle of the display. The discrepancies made by both groups of children increased with eccentricity, but the rate of increase was significantly greater for the poo

Extracellular recordings were made in area V2 of behaving macaque monkeys. Neurons were classified into three groups: non-oriented cells, oriented cells with antagonistic areas and oriented cells without antagonistic areas in their receptive field. All neurons were tested with standard visual stimulations in order to assess whether they gave different responses to the movement of a stimulus and to the movement of its retinal image alone, when the stimulus was motionless and the animal voluntarily moved its eyes. To do this, neuronal responses obtained when a moving stimulus swept a stationary

Functional magnetic resonance imaging indicates that observation of the human body induces a selective activation of a lateral occipitotemporal cortical area called extrastriate body area (EBA). This area is responsive to static and moving images of the human body and parts of it, but it is insensitive to faces and stimulus categories unrelated to the human body. With event-related repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, we tested the possible causal relation between neural activity in EBA and visual processing of body-related, nonfacial stimuli. Facial and noncorporeal stimuli were used

Human visual experience of objects comprises a combination of visual features, such as color, position, and shape. Spatial attention is thought to play a role in creating a coherent perceptual experience, integrating visual information coming from a given location, but the mechanisms underlying this process are not fully understood. Deficits of spatial attention in which this integration process does not occur normally, such as neglect, can provide insights regarding the mechanisms of spatial attention in visual object recognition. In this study, we describe a series of experiments conducted w

Neuroimaging and neuropsychological studies have identified the involvement of the right posterior region in the processing of visual words. Interestingly, in contrast, ERP studies of the N170 typically demonstrate selectivity for words more strikingly over the left hemisphere. Why is right hemisphere selectivity for words during the N170 epoch typically not observed, despite the clear involvement of this region in word processing? One possibility is that amplitude differences measured on averaged ERPs in previous studies may have been obscured by variation in peak latency across trials. This

In the current study we describe J.M., a 15-year-old boy with a history of congenital brain abnormalities and concomitant visual-processing impairments. J.M.'s most prominent deficit is his impaired face recognition, but formal testing also revealed deficits in other domains of visual processing. One aspect that emerged from J.M.'s visual-processing assessment was a tendency to focus on local features and to rely on them for the encoding and identification of visual stimuli including geometric figures, objects, words, and inverted faces. In spite of this general tendency, he was impaired on ta

This study examines visual processing in dyslexia using a psychophysical measure linked to reading speed, the visual span, defined as the number of letters reliably identified within a single fixation. We asked whether reduced visual span is associated with slower reading in dyslexia. In a laboratory study, adults with dyslexia and typical readers completed standardized assessments, reading speed, and visual span measurements. Individuals with dyslexia showed significantly slower reading speeds and narrower visual span profiles than typical readers. Visual span size was positively correlated w

We show a 90° shift in the perceived direction of a well-known motion illusion, based on the dot-pair separation in dynamic Glass patterns. The change can be explained with a cortical model incorporating extra-classical receptive fields. We employed dynamic Glass patterns: a sequence of patterns of randomly positioned, but consistently oriented dot-pairs, presented in rapid succession. Although dynamic Glass patterns contain no coherent motion, observers perceive strong motion in either direction parallel to the dot-pair orientation for small dot-pair separations (< 30 arc min). This has been

Shape processing, whether by seeing or touching, is pivotal to object recognition and manipulation. Although the low-level signals are initially processed by different modality-specific neural circuits, multimodal responses to object shapes have been reported along both ventral and dorsal visual pathways. To understand this transitional process, we conducted visual and haptic shape perception fMRI experiments to test basic shape features (i.e. curvature and rectilinear) across the visual pathways. Using a combination of region-of-interest-based support vector machine decoding analysis and voxe

The left ventral occipito-temporal cortex (vOTC) supports extraction and processing of visual features. However, it has remained unclear whether left vOTC-based functional connectivity (FC) differs according to task-relevant representations (e.g., lexical, visual) and control demands imposed by the task, even when similar visual-semantic processing is required for object identification. Here, neural responses to the same set of pictures of meaningful objects were measured, while the type of task that participants had to perform (picture naming versus size-judgment task), and the level of cogni

Object constancy is one of the most crucial mechanisms of the human visual system enabling viewpoint invariant object recognition. However, the neuronal foundations of object constancy are widely unknown. Research has shown that the ventral visual stream is involved in processing of various kinds of object stimuli and that several regions along the ventral stream are possibly sensitive to the orientation of an object in space. To systematically address the question of viewpoint sensitive object perception, we conducted a study with stroke patients as well as an fMRI experiment with healthy par

Gist perception refers to perceiving the substance or general meaning of a scene. To investigate its neuronal mechanisms, we used the steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP) method-an evoked oscillatory cortical response at the same frequency as a visual stimulus flickered at this frequency. Two neighboring stimuli were flickered at different frequencies f1 and f2, for example, a drawing of a sun on the left side of the screen flickering at 8.6 Hz and the drawing of a parasol on the right side of the screen flickering at 12 Hz. SSVEPs enabled us to separate the responses to the two dist
