Deep sternal wound infections are a serious complication following sternotomy for cardiothoracic surgery. "Conventional" treatment provides debridement and secondary closure or closed catheter irrigation. The combination of the Negative Pressure Therapy with flap coverages is an accepted technique and one or both Pectoralis Major muscles could be chosen. A multistep protocol was adopted. One hundred and sixty seven patients were treated with the combination of Negative Pressure Therapy with the Pectoralis Major muscle flap: 86 monolateral flap and 81 bilateral flap reconstruction. The long thoracic nerve's (LTN) superficial location on the chest wall renders it vulnerable to iatrogenic injury. Plastic surgeons' gender-affirming mastectomy volumes are rapidly increasing. This operation involves lateral chest contouring placing the distal LTN at risk of injury along the chest wall. Although proximal LTN injury can cause debilitating shoulder dysfunction, more distal injury can cause chronic postoperative shoulder pain and dysfunction without frank scapular winging, making diagnosis and treatment difficult. Therefore, injury is best avoided. In this study, the course of th

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory sarcopenia, defined as reduced respiratory muscle mass and strength, and has been reported as a potential prognostic factor in lung cancer. In patients undergoing non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) surgery, preoperative chest computed tomography (CT) is routinely performed and offers an opportunity to assess respiratory muscle volume. However, the reliability of CT-based measurements for different respiratory muscles has not been established, and standardized protocols are lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the inter-rater reliability of respiratory muscle volume m

BACKGROUND: Natural minerals can be innovative feed additives in the waterfowl nutrition, affecting the production efficiency and the meat quality. The study assessed production results, carcass characteristics, meat quality, and strength of the jejunum and leg bones of male and female Cherry Valley ducks fed with 1% halloysite. The ducks were kept in control groups (males and females) and fed a commercial diet. In the experimental groups (males and females), 1% halloysite was added to the diet throughout the rearing period. 50 ducks in 5 repetitions were in each group. During 42 days of reari

BACKGROUND: The rupture of the pectoralis major muscle is rare, occurring typically in young male athletes. When the break is complete and the patient active, surgical treatment is the choice.
CLINICAL CASE: 48-year-old man with severe pain in left shoulder after lifting weights. He presents impotence to adduction and internal rotation of the shoulder with thinning of the axillary fold. MRI confirms the diagnosis of complete rupture of the pectoralis major. Surgical treatment was decided, performing a deltopectoral approach and reinserting the pectoralis major tendon with three cortical butto

OBJECTIVES: There are multiple treatment strategies and flap options to cover defects after deep sternal wound infections and other similar sternal defects. The choice of flap is made according to surgeons' preferences and the size and location of the defect. Our aim is to introduce a new option to cover these kinds of defects with an internal mammary artery perforator flap combined with a pectoralis major muscle flap mostly raised with a muscle-sparing technique.
DESIGN: We treated 13 patients with a sternal defect after cardiothoracic operations with this technique between 2010-2016. Ten pa

INTRODUCTION: Whether pre left ventricular assist device (LVAD) sarcopenia is associated with higher incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) on LVAD support remains unknown.
METHODS: To study the association between preoperative sarcopenia and post LVAD GIB events, we performed a retrospective, multi-centered study including patients with chest CTs performed ≤ 3 months prior to LVAD implantation at the University of Minnesota (n = 143) and Houston Methodist Hospital (n = 133). To quantify sarcopenia, unilateral pectoralis muscle mass indexed to body surface area (PMI) and attenuation (ap

Patients often need to use their arms to assist with functional activities, but after open heart surgery, pushing with the arms is limited to <10 lb (4.5 kg) to help minimize force across the healing sternum. The main purposes of this study were to determine if older patients (>60 years old) (1) accurately estimated upper extremity (UE) weight bearing force of 10 lb or less and (2) if feedback training improved their ability to limit UE force and pectoralis major muscle contraction during functional activities. An instrumented walker was used to measure UE weight bearing force, and electromyog

Air-breathing vertebrates face many physiological challenges while breath-hold diving. In particular, they must endure intermittent periods of declining oxygen (O2) stores, as well as the need to rapidly replenish depleted O2 at the surface prior to their next dive. While many species show adaptive increases in the O2 storage capacity of the blood or muscles, others increase the oxidative capacity of the muscles through changes in mitochondrial arrangement, abundance, or remodeling of key metabolic pathways. Here, we assess the diving phenotypes of two sympatric diving birds: the anhinga (Anhi

The goal of this project is to enhance the benefits of functional electrical stimulation (FES) for individuals with cervical mid-level spinal cord injury (C5-C6 SCI) by providing upper arm function that complements the hand function provided by current FES systems. As a result of stimulation to selected shoulder and elbow muscles, individuals are able to increase their range of motion, their reaching ability, and improve their overall shoulder stability. An approach that provides a natural way of controlling arm stimulation is proposed. The controller extracts information from recorded EMG act

OBJECTIVES: Although a relationship between short pectoralis minor and upper trapezius and scapular dyskinesis has been postulated, no studies have investigated this theory. Understanding the effect of these muscle lengths on observable scapular dyskinesis may aid in determining risks and therefore making treatment decisions. Being aware of the magnitude of this effect would help gauge the significance of risks involved. Our aim was to evaluate the influence of pectoralis minor and upper trapezius lengths on scapular dyskinesis.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.

Pectoralis major injuries are uncommon, typically affecting young male athletes engaging in high-intensity activities like weightlifting. A 62-yr-old man, who previously suffered a stroke leading to left hemiparesis, hemisensory loss, and spasticity, exhibited a left chest swelling during a rehabilitation clinic visit. Subsequent inquiries revealed his recent incorporation of a home-based pulley system for stretching exercises. On examination, the swelling was diffuse, firm, and nontender, located at the midclavicular line of his left chest, with a positive dropped nipple sign and loss of the

Sarcopenia is a contributing factor in the development of long-COVID syndrome. We aimed to investigate how intercostal muscle mass changes over 3 months compared to other chest wall muscles following COVID-19 infection, along with identifying factors contributing to intercostal muscle loss during follow-up. We retrospectively studied 110 COVID-19 patients, analyzing muscle masses in the intercostal, pectoralis, and thoracic 12th vertebra level (T12) on initial and follow-up CT scans. Muscle mass was quantitatively assessed using density histogram analysis. We calculated the muscle difference r

Absence of the right pectoralis major muscle and hypoplasia of the ipsilateral breast was observed in 3 females and hypoplasia or agenesis of the right pectoralis major muscle in 2 males of the same family. One member of this family, a 17-year-old girl, underwent a right latissimus dorsi muscle flap, placement of silicone-gel breast implant, and a right infraclavicular natural Y prosthesis. Although none of our 5 patients from this family had congenital upper limb abnormalities, we believe that they still qualify as having Poland's syndrome. This would distinguish them as being the fourteenth

1. Musculo-skeletal development was measured in males and females of two genetic lines of turkey breeding stock: one line had been selected mainly for egg production (E-line) while the other had been selected for meat production as well as egg production (M-line). 2. The M-line had a more rapid growth of body weight and breast muscle weight than the E-line but breast muscle yield (breast muscle weight/body weight) did not differ between lines. 3. From an early age, breast length and keel length were longer in the M-line than in the E-line. 4. In older birds, keel depth was greater in the M-lin

BACKGROUND: Using the subpectoral approach, animation deformity or breast distortion due to pectoralis muscle contraction is common. Although the anatomy of the pectoral nerves has been extensively studied, only few studies have related the location of these nerves to bony landmarks.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim is to clarify the anatomy and possible variations of the innervation of the pectoralis major in relation to bony landmarks useful for surgery and to identify the preferred level for (selective) denervation by 1) transecting the nerves and 2) splitting the muscle in subpectoral breast implant su

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is an uncommon congenital condition marked by the absence of major chest muscles, typically on one side. Individuals with congenital abnormalities such as Poland syndrome are at increased risk for cancer.
CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old male with undiagnosed Poland syndrome initially presented with dysphagia. The patient had a 20 pack-year smoking history but had quit smoking at the time of presentation. Endoscopic ultrasound showed a large obstructing mass in the distal third of the esophagus, and computed tomography (CT) scan showed an esophageal mass and congenital a

Ultrasound-guided botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injections play a critical role in the management of upper limb spasticity. This is the second part of 'The Elias University Hospital Approach: A Visual Guide to Ultrasound-Guided Botulinum Toxin Injection in Spasticity' and it focuses on the proximal upper limb muscles, complementing the first part, which addressed the distal upper limb muscles. This guide provides a detailed analysis of ultrasound anatomy, clinical relevance, and injection strategies for the latissimus dorsi, teres major, subscapularis, pectoralis major, pectoralis minor, del

Poland syndrome is characterized by congenital and unilateral absence of the pectoralis major muscle and ipsilateral upper limb anomalies. Identified patients also may include other disorders. We report a 15-year-old Caucasian woman with a unilateral hypoplasia of the breast and nipple, ipsilateral chest wall depression deformity, pectoralis major muscle agenesis, and severe hirsutism (Ferriman-Gallwey score: 21) without extremity anomaly. She had regular menses, and no hormonal abnormality and family history of hirsutism. Therefore, she was considered as a case of idiopathic hirsutism. This i
