Associations between frequency of exposure to peer-generated alcohol-related posts and alcohol use within a social network of college students.

Peer alcohol use, commonly assessed via perceptions of how many drinks peers consume, is a robust predictor of college drinking. These perce … nterventions to college students may wish to discuss exposure to ARC as another important source of peer influence and how media literacy may help reduce the effects.

From parents to peers! Social support and peer attachment as mediators of parental attachment and depression: A Chinese perspective.

BACKGROUND: Secure attachment has been associated with a lower incidence of depressive symptoms in adolescents. Adolescence is an important period for attachment development as it shapes future attachment patterns. This study adopts a social support perspective to explore the transition from parental attachment to peer attachment, and its impact on reducing depression. METHODS: A sample of 7792 students from China, aged 11 to 19 years (mean = 15.19, SD = 2.564), completed three questionnaires: the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, the Social Support Scale, and the Self-Depression Scale

Peer Social Genetic Effects and the Etiology of Substance Use Disorders, Major Depression, and Anxiety Disorder in a Swedish National Sample.

OBJECTIVE: There is growing interest in how peers' genotypes may influence health (i.e., peer social genetic effects). The authors sought to clarify the nature of peer social genetic effects on risk for drug use disorder, alcohol use disorder (AUD), major depression, and anxiety disorder. METHOD: Cox models were used with data from a population-based Swedish cohort (N=655,327). Outcomes were drug use disorder, AUD, major depression, and anxiety disorder registrations between ages 17 and 30 from medical, criminal, and pharmacy registries. The authors indexed peer social genetic effects with pe

The impact of "nurse-led education" vs. "nurse-led education plus peer support" on patients' decision for peritoneal dialysis treatment in chronic kidney disease patients.

INTRODUCTION: End-stage kidney disease patients face a critical decision regarding kidney replacement therapy options, which include kidney transplantation, hemodialysis, or peritoneal dialysis (PD). This study aims to evaluate the impact of nurse-led education (NE) alone vs. NE combined with peer support on the patients' decision over PD treatment in chronic kidney disease patients. METHODS: The study was conducted between 2018 and 2020, and patients were prospectively followed for the years 2018-2020. A total of 238 patients were selected from 500 outpatient clinic patients based on inclusi

Individual, study, and neighborhood level characteristics associated with peer recruitment of young illicit drug users in New York City: optimizing respondent driven sampling.

Recruiting a representative sample using respondent driven sampling (RDS) relies on successful peer recruitment. While prior studies have identified individual-level characteristics associated with peer recruitment, study- and neighborhood-level factors may also influence peer recruitment. This analysis aimed to identify individual-, study-, and neighborhood-level factors associated with RDS peer recruitment. 390 young adult (18-40 years) heroin, crack and/or cocaine users in New York City (NYC) were recruited via RDS into a cohort study aiming to identify social risk factors for transitioning

Pressured to climb the social ladder: the role of popularity, social preference, and parents and friends in adolescents' popularity-motivated aggression.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines how perceived pressure from parents and friends to attain social status moderates the relationship between peer status (popularity, social preference) and popularity-motivated aggression (relational aggression, cyber aggression) over 1 year. METHODS: A sample of 767 eighth-grade students completed self-reported measures of aggression and peer nominations of popularity and social preference. RESULTS: Structural equation modeling showed that popularity was positively associated with both types of aggression, while social preference was negatively associated. H

Parental modeling, attachment, and supervision as moderators of adolescent gambling.

Utilizing Jessor's Problem Behavior Theory as a theoretical foundation, 116 male and female students in grades 9-12 (mean age 16.8) from a Midwestern urban high school were surveyed to determine the prevalence and relationship among gambling behavior and parental and peer influences. To measure these variables, the following instruments were used: The SOGS-RA, the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment-Parent Scale, and The Alabama Parenting Questionnaire-Parental Monitoring and Supervision Scale. Almost all of the students (91%) reported gambling at least once in their lifetime while 36.2% r…

"If my buddies use drugs, will I?" Peer effects on Substance Consumption Among Teenagers.

During adolescence, interactions with peers influence a teen's attitudes and behaviors. Adolescents seek for peer approval and acceptance, which may bring them to engage in health-risky behaviors such as smoking and drinking. In this study, we estimate the impact of peers on the drug use of Spanish students aged 14 to 18. We focus on the consumption of alcohol and tobacco, the most prevalent substances used at those ages. We estimate the effect of the average classmates' consumption-the measure of peers' use-on individual consumption. Since peers' use affects individual use and vice versa, we

Increasing supportive responses to a peer's distress following a loss: The role of attachment orientations, security priming, and previous experience with loss.

Many bereaved college students find their peers' support to be unhelpful. This study explored whether previously unexamined individual-difference factors and experimental priming of felt security (i.e., confidence in support availability) can influence supportive responses to a bereaved peer among university students (N = 202; 76% female; 44% White, 24% Asian, 15% Black, 10% Multiracial, 8% other identities). Attachment insecurity (avoidance and anxiety) predicted less supportive responses, whereas previous personal experience with loss predicted more supportive responses. Students who were ra

Influence of anxiety on the social functioning of children with and without ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: This investigation examined the contribution of anxiety to the social functioning of children with and without ADHD. METHOD: Participants were 62 children with ADHD (ages 6-10 years and 68% boys) and 62 age- and sex-matched comparison children. Children's social functioning was measured through parent and teacher reports, observations of social behaviors during a lab-based playgroup with previously unacquainted peers, and peer nominations during that lab-based playgroup. RESULTS: Anxiety symptoms incrementally predicted adult-informant reports of poorer social functioning after co

To tell or not to tell? factors influencing young people's informal disclosures of child sexual abuse.

The aim was to understand the factors influencing informal disclosure of child sexual abuse experiences, taking account of dynamics operating prior to, during, and following disclosure. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 young people who experienced child sexual abuse and 14 parents. Grounded theory methodology informed the study. The key factors identified as influencing the disclosure process included being believed, being asked, shame/self-blame, concern for self and others, and peer influence. Many young people both wanted to tell and did not want to tell. Fear of n…

Factors influencing sexual initiation, multiple partners and condom use among male slum youth in Pune, India.

This study examines the factors that influence sexual behaviours among young unmarried males living in urban slums in India, a population characterised by high vulnerability to STI and HIV infections. Data were collected from 600 unmarried male slum youth to examine the relationships between three outcomes of heterosexual behaviour (age at sexual initiation, number of sexual partners and condom use at first intercourse) and factors within the family/household social environment, peer environment and individual level during the respondents' formative years. Regression analyses found factors wit

Negative parenting behavior and childhood oppositional defiant disorder: differential moderation by positive and negative peer regard.

Although negative parenting behavior and peer status are independently associated with childhood conduct problems (e.g., oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)), relatively little is known about their interplay, particularly in relation to differentiated measures of positive and negative peer regard. To improve the specificity of the association of negative parenting behavior and peer factors with ODD, we explored the potential interaction of parenting and peer status in a sample of 169 five-to ten-year-old ethnically diverse children with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADH

Is Likeability in the Eye of the Beholder? A Quasi-Experimental Study on Personality, Social Anxiety and the Need for Affiliation in Assessing the Likability of Socially Anxious Adults.

While most people desire acceptance and approval from their peers, previous research have shown that for anxious individuals often peers show a reduced willingness to pursue further interactions with them after initial interactions. To gain a deeper understanding of the factors influencing the process of likability, we conducted two studies. Using a zero-acquaintance paradigm and a quasi-experimental design, we aimed to investigate whether the likability of socially anxious and non-anxious individuals is primarily influenced by first impressions or the extent of their self-disclosure.
