Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a major bacterial pathogen in shrimp aquaculture, and the development of new anti-infective strategies is urgently needed due to limited protective options. In this study, we report that the plant-derived compound honokiol (HKL) acts as an effective adjuvant to doxycycline (DOX) against V. parahaemolyticus. Checkerboard assays revealed an additive interaction between HKL and DOX (FICI = 0.5625), accompanied by a 16-fold reduction in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of DOX from 64 μg/mL to 4 μg/mL. Plate-count-based time-kill analysis showed that the HKL-DOX

White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) is known to cause significant mortality in farmed shrimp, including black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) and white leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) across several countries. Prolonged infections with WSSV are difficult to eliminate with traditional methods like vaccinations, probiotics, and immunostimulants. Herein, we assessed the antiviral effectiveness of two medicinal plants, Cydonia oblonga and Juglans regia, against WSSV. The crude ethanolic leaf extract of J. regia and the acetone fruit extract of C. oblonga were evaluated through phytochemical analysis

Sialic acids are crucial for maintaining intestinal homeostasis, but their role in food allergies remains poorly understood. This study investigates the regulatory function of sialic acid (Neu5Ac) in tropomyosin-induced allergic responses, with the aim of identifying potential therapeutic targets. In a C57BL/6N mouse model sensitized with shrimp tropomyosin, Neu5Ac treatment alleviated allergic symptoms, as evidenced by reduced anaphylaxis scores, lower levels of allergen-specific antibodies and Th2 cytokines, enhanced gut microbiota composition, and increased short-chain fatty acid production

Exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is of great concern for human health because of their persistence and potentially adverse effects. Dietary intake, particularly through aquatic products, is a significant route of human exposure to PFAS. We analyzed perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid (PFSA with carbon numbers from 6 to 8 and 10 (C6-C8, C10)) and perfluorooctanesulfonamide (FOSA), and perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid (PFCA with carbon numbers from 6 to 15 (C6-C15)) in 30 retail packs of edible shrimps, which included seven species from eight coastal areas of Japan and neighboring c

Surface display can expose foreign antigenic protein on the surface of the vaccine vector, which is promising choice to elicit better immune responses. In this study, we apply this strategy to develop an immunoactivator by using a live attenuated Vibrio harveyi as an antigenic protein carrier with surface displayed VP28, a major envelope protein of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), for two major pathogens of Litopenaeus vannamei. As a result, the immunoactivator showed self-limited growth and attenuation of virulence in shrimp via different inoculation routes either with single-repetitive dose

We studied the possible role that marine microalgae may play during the outbreaks of WSS (white spot syndrome). In order to elucidate the possibility of marine microalgae carrying WSSV (white spot syndrome virus), six marine microalgae (Isochrysis galbana, Skeletonema costatum, Chlorella sp., Heterosigma akashiwo, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Dunaliella salina) were co-cultured with adult Marsupenaeus japonicus infected with WSSV and were assayed daily by nested-PCR to study whether they could carry WSSV. Further experiments were conducted to investigate whether the virus carried by microalgae cou

BACKGROUND: There is some evidence that specific immunotherapy may induce de novo sensitization to proteins contained in the allergen extract. This raises the possibility that the novel sensitization to cross-reacting allergens may cause food allergies.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess whether injection of mite-specific immunotherapy (SIT) may induce sensitization to shrimp tropomyosin.
METHODS: Seventy mite-allergic subjects who did not show any shrimp sensitization at baseline were followed up for at least 3 years. Thirty-one of them underwent a 3-year SIT course, 39 served a

BACKGROUND: White feces syndrome (WFS) is a major health problem affecting intensive shrimp aquaculture, but its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Increasing evidence suggests that WFS may involve complex interactions among host physiological status, intestinal microbial dysbiosis, and environmental microbial communities. However, the relationships among these factors within commercial shrimp culture systems remain poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the associations among intestinal antioxidant capacity, intestinal microbiota, sediment microbial communities, an

Pathogenic microorganisms, particularly white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), pose a major threat to global shrimp aquaculture, causing mass mortalities and substantial economic losses. To address the urgent need for rapid, accurate, and field-deployable detection methods, this study developed an innovative one-pot RAA-CRISPR/Cas12a assay. The platform integrates recombinase-aided amplification (RAA) with CRISPR/Cas12a technology using sucrose-mediated density gradient phase separation in a closed-tube format: sucrose acts as a density modifier to form distinct layers, spatially isolating RAA ampl

The insulin superfamily constitutes a phylogenetically conserved hormonal system that critically regulates growth, metabolism, and reproduction in Metazoa. However, the functional diversification and the architecture of its regulatory networks of this superfamily remains poorly characterized in crustaceans. Here, we identify and characterize two little-studied insulin superfamily genes in the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei, gonadulin (LvGon) and insulin-related peptide (LvIRP). LvGon is predominantly expressed in neural tissues (brain and thoracic ganglia), while LvIRP is specifical

Nitrite is a harmful substance generated in Litopenaeus vannamei farming systems, largely originating from the inadequate breakdown of surplus feed and shrimp feces. Its accumulation in the water can affect the growth and physiological functions of shrimp, damage the immune system, and even cause mass mortality, thus becoming a key environmental factor restricting the green development of the industry. Under nitrite stress, the eyestalk, as an important neuroendocrine regulatory center in crustaceans, participates in the stress adaptation of the organism and exerts a protective effect by regul

As the predominant allergen in shrimp, tropomyosin (TM) undergoes α-dicarbonyl mediated glycation during processing, leading to the generation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs)-TM conjugates. This work systematically investigated the generation of AGEs and immunomodulatory effects of AGEs on TM allergenicity. As the results, there exits a positive correlation between AGEs generation and three key parameters: α-dicarbonyl compounds (glyoxal (GO), methylglyoxal (MGO), 2,3-butanedione (BU)) concentration, reaction duration, and processing temperature. In BALB/c mouse, all AGEs-modified TM

Seafood may accumulate heavy metals (HMs) from environmental sources, posing potential health risks through dietary intake. This study aimed to assess the health risk associated with dietary intake of Hg, Cd, As and Zn from selected seafood available in Poland. In this study, a total 51 samples of shrimp and squid were analysed. The metals content was determined using such analytical methods as ET-AAS with a graphite furnace in the case of Cd, ICP-OES in the case of As and Zn, and CV-AFS in the case of Hg. The mean content of Cd and Zn were found to be 0.25 and 16.94 mg/kg f. w., respectively.

Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in food pose severe threats to human wellness, so it is extremely urgent to develop effective method with high sensitivity for detecting EDCs in seafoods. Herein, novel urea-functionalized magnetic porous polymer (M-NB-POP) was synthesized from N,N,N',N'-tetra(p-aminophenyl)-p-phenylenediamine and 1,3-bis(2-isocyanato-2-propyl)benzene under mild conditions for the first time. M-NB-POP with good recoverability and recyclability shows excellent adsorption for several typical EDCs through hydrogen bonding, π-π and hydrophobic interaction. Using M-NB-POP as ma

Food allergies are a global health problem that continues to grow annually, with a prevalence of more than 10%. Shrimp allergy is the most common and life-threatening allergy. There is no cure for food allergies, but shrimp allergen extract (SAE) offers promise as a treatment through allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT). However, whether SAE induces immunological tolerance in seafood allergies remains to be established. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of SAE in inducing immunological tolerance in a gastro-food allergy mouse model. For the immunotherapy evaluation, mice (n = 24
