A computational study of a period of infant object-concept development.

Piaget has distinguished a number of distinct stages in the development of the concept of an enduring external object during infancy. I present a theory of a class of behaviours at one of these stages embodied in a working computer program. The behaviour of this program matches a class of perceptual behaviours of infants between about twelve and twenty weeks of age in a number of experimental situations studied by Bower. The theory argues that these behaviours are a result of the interaction between the perceptual and conceptual levels of the system, and the way in which conflicts between comp

Speed of perceptual grouping in acquired brain injury.

Evidence exists that damage to white matter connections may contribute to reduced speed of information processing in traumatic brain injury and stroke. Damage to such axonal projections suggests a particular vulnerability to functions requiring integration across cortical sites. To test this prediction, measurements were made of perceptual grouping, which requires integration of stimulus components. A group of traumatic brain injury and cerebral vascular accident patients and a group of age-matched healthy control subjects viewed arrays of dots and indicated the pattern into which stimuli were

Wide and diffuse perceptual modes characterize dyslexics in vision and audition.

We examined the performance of dyslexic and typically reading children on two analogous recognition tasks: one visual and the other auditory. Both tasks required recognition of centrally and peripherally presented stimuli. Dyslexics recognized letters visually farther in the periphery and more diffuse near the center than typical readers did. Both groups performed comparably in recognizing centrally spoken stimuli presented without peripheral interference, but in the presence of a surrounding speech mask (the 'cocktail-party effect') dyslexics recognized the central stimuli significantly less

Tactile perception in developmental dyslexia: a psychophysical study using gratings.

Multiple sensory abnormalities have been reported in individuals with developmental dyslexia, especially in the visual and auditory systems. We used gratings of alternating ridges and grooves to investigate tactile perception in this disorder using two tasks: spatial acuity-dependent discrimination of grating orientation and discrimination of gratings varying in ridge width. Compared to age-matched normal subjects, dyslexics were significantly impaired on grating orientation discrimination, with mean thresholds that were nearly twice normal. Unlike normal subjects, their performance on this ta

Gender differentiates effects of acoustic stimulation in patients with tinnitus.

Gender constitutes a major factor to consider when tailoring subtype-based therapies for tinnitus. Previous reports showed important differences between men and women concerning basic perceptual tinnitus characteristics (i.e., laterality, frequency, tinnitus loudness) as well as psychological reactions linked to this condition. Therapeutic approaches based on acoustic stimulation involve processes beyond a pure masking effect and consist of sound presentation temporarily altering or alleviating tinnitus perception via residual and/or lateral inhibition mechanisms. Presented stimuli may include

A preliminary investigation into the aetiology of Meares-Irlen syndrome.

A recent double-masked placebo-controlled trial has confirmed that some children experience a reduction in symptoms of eyestrain and headache when they read through individually prescribed coloured filters and has shown that this benefit cannot be solely attributed to a placebo effect. People who are helped by coloured filters in this way have been described as having "Meares-Irlen syndrome'. We investigated the mechanism of this benefit by studying the optometric and visual perceptual characteristics of the children in the double-masked study. This population had normal refractive errors and

Generalization of deep neural-network based noise reduction to accented-English speecha).

The current study involved the ability of deep-learning based noise reduction to generalize to accented-English speech. The deep neural network (DNN) was trained using a large number of different speakers (and different noises) of primarily standard native American English. This model was used to remove background noise from speech produced by 88 speakers having 9 different native-language backgrounds, who spoke English as a second language. The resulting speech was characterized by accents strong enough to substantially affect intelligibility. Objective measures of intelligibility, which refl

Effect of stimulus level on speech masking by multitalker noise in a cochlear model.

Previous research shows that intelligibility of speech in noise (SIN) with a constant speech-to-noise ratio (SNR) changes in dependence on overall stimulus level. It has been hypothesized that these changes were associated with nonlinear responses of the cochlear basilar membrane, however, the exact role of auditory periphery in this behavior is not clear. We explore this phenomenon using a nonlinear cochlear model with adjustable gain to examine how multi-talker (babble) noise affects the speech signal at the output of the auditory periphery. The amount of distortion at various intensities ca

The relationship between speech in noise perception and auditory working memory capacity in monolingual and bilingual adults.

OBJECTIVE: Speech-in-noise perception is dependent on the interaction between sensory and cognitive processes. One factor that can relate to both processes is bilingualism. This study aimed to determine the correlation between auditory-working-memory and speech-in-noise in Persian monolinguals and Kurdish-Persian bilinguals. DESIGN: Speech-in-noise tests (sentences-in-noise and syllables-in-noise) and auditory-working-memory tests (forward and backward digit span, and n-back) were performed. STUDY SAMPLE: Participants were 48 Kurdish-Persian bilinguals with a mean age of 24 (±4) years and 48

Can Residual Inhibition Predict the Success of Sound Enrichment Treatment for Tinnitus?

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate whether residual inhibition (RI), which provides information on the relationship between tinnitus and increased spontaneous activity in the auditory system, is a predictor for the success of sound enrichment treatment. DESIGN: Tinnitus patients were divided into two groups based on whether RI was achieved (RI+) or not (RI-). All participants underwent sound enrichment. Psychosomatic measures (for tinnitus severity, discomfort, attention deficit and sleep difficulties), Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), minimum masking level (MML), an

A New Method for Assessing Masking and Residual Inhibition of Tinnitus.

Tinnitus masking and residual inhibition (RI) are two well-known psychoacoustic measures of tinnitus. While it has long been suggested that they may provide diagnostic and prognostic information, these measures are still rarely performed in clinics, as they are too time consuming. Given this issue, the main goal of the present study was to validate a new method for assessing these measures. An acoustic sequence made of pulsed stimuli, which included a fixed stimulus duration and interstimulus interval, was applied to 68 tinnitus patients at two testing sites. First, the minimum masking level (

An evaluation of the Reltus ear massager for short-term tinnitus relief.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory stimulation has been shown to suppress the loudness of tinnitus (residual inhibition, RI). Somatosensory manipulations have also been shown to sometimes decrease tinnitus perception. An 'ear-massaging' device, the 'Reltus' ( www.reltus.com ), has been marketed as a tinnitus treatment device. This study was undertaken to evaluate its short-term effectiveness and mode of effect. DESIGN: The research was undertaken in two phases. Phase 1 measured the change in tinnitus perception after one minute of auditory stimulation through headphones and after application of a vibrating

Precursor effects on behavioral estimates of frequency selectivity and gain in forward masking.

The experiments presented in this paper explore the hypothesis that cochlear gain is reduced, in a frequency-specific manner, over the course of a sound (called a "precursor") which was designed to activate the medial olivo-cochlear reflex (MOCR). Psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) and off-frequency growth of masking (GOM) functions were measured with two precursors. The on-frequency precursor condition, which was hypothesized to activate the MOCR at the signal frequency, produced a PTC with a lower best frequency in all subjects consistent with less gain. This same condition produced a GOM f

Perception of successive targets presented in invariant-item streams.

When two successive, spatially overlapping, targets (S1 and S2) are presented on a blank background, S2 typically dominates in explicit perception. We tested whether S2 dominance is also found for the conditions of presenting S1 and S2 in a stream of irrelevant objects. Successive target letters were presented within a stream of invariant stimulus items (capital Is). The stream items were presented either as a perceptually continuous object where both type and token appeared invariant (60-Hz stream) or as a flickering stream of successive replicas of the invariant stationary object where the t

Auditory filter shapes at low center frequencies in young and elderly hearing-impaired subjects.

Auditory filter shapes were measured for two groups of hearing-impaired subjects, young and elderly, matched for audiometric loss, for center frequencies (fc) of 100, 200, 400, and 800 Hz using a modified notched-noise method [B. R. Glasberg and B. C. J. Moore, Hear. Res. 47, 103-138 (1990)]. Two noise bands, each 0.4fc wide, were used; they were placed both symmetrically and asymmetrically about the signal frequency to allow the measurement of filter asymmetry. The overall noise level was either 77 or 87 dB SPL. Stimuli were delivered monaurally using Sennheiser HD424 earphones. Although audi

Controlled and automatic information processing in senile dementia: a review.

The evidence on cognitive decline in senile dementia is reviewed with respect to the distinction between controlled and automatic processing. It is argued that controlled processing, which requires the attentional resources of the individual, declines in early senile dementia. However, automatic processing, which does not require attentional resources, is well maintained until late in the disorder. Implications of this view are drawn for the development of effective screening instruments which can be used for the early detection of dementia in the general population.
