Set-shifting and its relation to clinical and personality variables in full recovery of anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: First, this study aimed to explore whether set-shifting is inefficient after full recovery of anorexia nervosa (recAN). Second, t … cipants achieved fewer categories, showed more perseverations and spent less time for shifting set. Perfectionism is correlated with set-shifting but in converse directions in the two groups. DISCUSSION: Our study supports the findings of inefficiencies in set-shifting after full recovery from AN. Higher perfectionism in the recAN group is associated with bett …

Performing well but not appreciating it - A trait feature of anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in the etiology of anorexia nervosa (AN), a large subgroup of individuals does not profit optimally from treatment. Perfectionism has been found to be a risk factor predicting the onset, severity, and duration of AN episodes. To date, perfectionism has been studied predominantly by the use of self-report questionnaires, a useful approach that may, however, be impacted by demand characteristics, or other distortions of introspective or metacognitive access. METHODS: Here we circumvent these problems via a behavioral paradigm in which participants perform a modified…

Just let me check: The role of individual differences in self-reported anxiety and obsessive-compulsive features on subjective, behavioural, and physiological indices during a checking task.

Checking behaviour has been described as a form of preventative behaviour used by an individual to establish control over the environment and avoid future misfortune. However, when compulsive, checking behaviours can become disabling and distressing and have been linked to the maintenance of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Despite this, there is limited literature across the field that has assessed the impact of dimensional measures of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive features (i.e., negative affect, uncertainty, and perfectionism) in driving checking behaviour. As such, the presen…

Differentiating motives for nonmedical prescription stimulant use by personality characteristics.

Nonmedical prescription stimulant use (NPS) is increasing, particularly among college students. College students typically engage in NPS for cognitive enhancement, recreational, and appetite/weight-related purposes; however, little research has used these motives to identify specific risk for, or consequences of, NPS. Moreover, there may be unique risk factors for motive-specific NPS that have yet to be explored, such as relevant personality traits (i.e., distress tolerance, impulsivity, and perfectionism) that are associated with NPS in general. Therefore, this study aimed to examine whether …

Relationship between obsessive personality traits and eating disorders.

This study aimed to examine associations between obsessive personality traits (perfectionism, desire for control, and cognitive flexibility) and eating-related symptomatology in a non-clinical sample of young adults. The objective was to explore which subdimensions were most strongly associated with eating attitudes. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 890 students aged 18-25 years, who completed validated self-report measures: the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) (Garner and Garfinkel in Psychol Med 9(2):273-279, 1979), the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS) (Frost et al. …

Patterns of implicit and explicit identity as a vegan or vegetarian in predicting healthy orthorexia and orthorexia nervosa.

Orthorexia nervosa (OrNe) is an eating disorder characterised by a pathological interest and preoccupation with healthy foods and a healthy diet. Evidence suggests that tendencies towards OrNe may be prevalent across diet groups, and this is particularly the case in vegans and vegetarians. Our previous work has identified that alongside individual differences in obsessive compulsiveness and perfectionism, cognitive biases (attentional preference for healthy-related cues) are associated with OrNe, whereas explicit identity (as a vegan/vegetarian) is only associated with a healthy orthorexia for…

A randomized controlled feasibility trial of metacognitive training with adolescents receiving treatment for anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: This pilot study investigated the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of the metacognitive training for eating disorders (MCT-ED) program in adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN). We report attrition and subjective evaluation as well as changes to cognitive flexibility, perfectionism and eating disorder pathology relative to waitlist controls. METHOD: Female (n = 35, aged 13-17 years) outpatients with a diagnosis of AN (n = 20) or atypical AN (n = 15) completed baseline measures of cognitive flexibility, perfectionism, and eating disorder pathology (May 2020-May 2022). Profiles of Perfectionistic Ruminations in Undergraduates: Impact on the Spontaneous Use of Mental Images.

Perfectionistic Automatic Thoughts (PAT) negatively affects people who present it. Hence the importance of their study to determine possible ways of reduction. The current study tried to identify PAT profiles and specify the statistically significant differences in the Spontaneous Use of Mental Imaging in 647 undergraduates. For this the Perfectionism Cognitions Inventory and the Spontaneous Use of Imagery Scale were used. The cluster analyses showed three groups of PATs; low (LPAT), moderate (MPAT) and high (HPAT). An analysis of variance revealed moderate size differences in the visual-spati…

Psychological characteristics of children who suffer from headache: a research note.

Twenty-three volunteer subjects were compared with 23 (matched) control subjects on self and parental ratings of anxiety, depression, shyness-sensitivity, sleeping difficulties, perfectionism, psychosomatic problems (unrelated to headache), other behavioural disturbances, major life stress events and parental expectations (i.e. achievement orientation). Results indicated that the headache children showed significantly higher shyness-sensitivity, psychosomatic problems and behavioural disturbances and significantly lower parental expectations than the control group children. No other difference…

Anxiety in musicians with focal dystonia and those with chronic pain.

Psychological conditions were studied in 20 musicians with focal dystonia and compared with 20 musicians with chronic pain and 30 healthy musicians using the Freiburg Personality Inventory and the Questionnaire for Competence and Control Orientations. Additional questionnaires focused on perfectionism and anxiety particularly with regard to the dynamics of these psychological features. Musicians with focal dystonia and those with chronic pain more often displayed anxiety than controls. In both patient groups, anxiety was present before onset of the playing-related disorder. Dystonic musicians …

Perfectionistic Self-Presentation and Psychopathology: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Decades of research implicate perfectionism as a risk factor for psychopathology. Most research has focused on trait perfectionism (i.e., needing to be perfect), but there is a growing focus on perfectionistic self-presentation (PSP) (i.e., the need to seem perfect). The current article reports the results of a meta-analysis of previous research on the facets of PSP and psychopathology outcomes (either clinical diagnoses of psychiatric disorders or symptoms of these disorders). A systematic literature search retrieved 30 relevant studies (37 samples; N = 15,072), resulting in 192 individual ef…

The association between social media use and body dysmorphic symptoms in young people.

INTRODUCTION: Social media use (SMU) is highly prevalent amongst young people and previous research suggests an association with mental health problems, including poor body image. However, the potential relationship between SMU and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) has received little attention. Furthermore, little is known about the factors that moderate the potential association between SMU and body dysmorphic symptoms. The current study tested the associations between three facets of SMU and body dysmorphic symptoms and explored perfectionism as a moderator in a non-clinical sample. METHOD: T…
