Lung abscess caused by Actinomyces odontolyticus.

A 64-year-old woman with periodontal disease was admitted because of fever, right chest pain, and bloody sputum. Her chest radiograph revealed a nodular shadow in the right middle lung fields. From the results of a needle aspiration biopsy, she was diagnosed with a lung abscess due to Actinomyces odontolyticus (A. odontolyticus) and Streptococcus spp. The patient improved quickly with antibiotics. To our knowledge, only nine cases of pulmonary infection due to A. odontolyticus have been reported, and we report the first case in Japan. Although respiratory disease caused by A. odontolyticus is

Are dental infections a cause of brain abscess? Case report and review of the literature.

Dental pathology and/or treatment have been linked to a small number of brain abscesses as possible sources of infection. A further case is presented, in which a dental site is implicated. A review of the evidence was undertaken. A wide range of dental procedures had been implicated. In some cases the brain isolate was not of dental origin. In many, the diagnosis was one of exclusion. In order to confirm the role of odontogenic infection in the pathogenesis of brain abscess, modern sampling techniques should be used to precisely identify the isolates. The causal organism should be identified i

Early wound healing outcomes after regenerative periodontal surgery with enamel matrix derivatives or guided tissue regeneration: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Proper wound healing after regenerative surgical procedures is an essential issue for clinical success. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) and application of enamel matrix derivatives (EMD) are common means to regenerate periodontal tissues. Both methods bear considerable advantages due to their special characteristics, but also go along with certain disadvantages. Today, there is no consensus in the literature whether GTR or EMD show better results regarding early wound healing, which is considered a crucial stage in periodontal regeneration. Therefore, the aim of the present system

Genetic reduction or deletion of osteopontin in osteomalacic Hyp mice fails to ameliorate dentoalveolar defects.

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is caused by inactivating mutations in PHEX, leading to disturbed mineral metabolism, rickets, and osteomalacia. Dentoalveolar defects affecting dentin, cementum, and alveolar bone, contribute to dental abscesses and periodontal breakdown. Limited efficacy of current therapies for ameliorating XLH-associated dentoalveolar effects suggests mechanisms of disease that remain unchecked. Increased production and abnormal distribution of osteopontin (OPN) is thought to contribute to XLH-associated mineralization defects. Osteopontin is a secreted phosphoprotein and mi

Endodontic regeneration and tooth revitalization in immature infected sheep teeth.

AIM: To examine the response of immature sheep teeth with infected root canal systems to a commonly used pulp regeneration/revitalization protocol. METHODOLOGY: Immature mandibular right first incisors in four sheep were mechanically exposed and the pulps infected. The mandibular left first incisors remained intact as controls. Five weeks later, the experimental root canals were chemo-mechanically cleaned and dressed with a triple-antibiotic paste for 4 weeks, before bleeding was induced inside the canal by mechanically irritating the periapical tissues. A collagen dressing was packed coronal

Subcutaneous abscesses and pulmonary infiltrate due to actinomyces infection. Case report.

Although Actinomyces israelii is part of the normal flora of the mouth, local trauma or poor dental hygiene may precipitate invasive infection. Hematogenous dissemination is rare. A case of pulmonary and subcutaneous actinomycosis is presented. The characteristic appearance of actinomycotic abscesses, and the importance of correct handling of tissue specimens and adequate information to the microbiologist are emphasized.

Antibiotic Over-Prescription by Dentists in the Treatment of Apical Periodontitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

UNLABELLED: After pulp infection and necrosis, the passage of microbial antigens into the periapical space causes apical periodontitis (AP). Most of the clinical forms of AP can be managed without prescribing antibiotics, only with root canal treatment and abscess drainage or, where appropriate, tooth extraction. However, the scientific literature provides evidence of inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions by dentists in the management of apical disease. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to analyze the global pattern of antibiotic prescription in the treatmen

Acute and chronic alveolitis/osteomyelitis ("lumpy jaw") in small exotic ruminants.

Tooth-related abscesses in small captive ruminants are most likely foreign body-induced periodontic-endodontic lesions. The instigating cause may be abnormal texture of dietary material. Bacteria, though probably not the initiating cause, significantly contribute to pathology and morbidity. Extraction of severely affected teeth is an effective although sometimes challenging mode of treatment. Periodically complications may arise, which vary in difficulty of treatment. Prevention may be the alteration of the major forage component of the diet to textures that are less coarse and stemmy, and the

[Application of ultrasonography in diagnosis and treatment of acute inflammation of soft tissues in maxillofacial region and neck].

We investigated the value of ultrasonography (USG) and ultrasound-guided aspirations in diagnosis and treatment of acute inflammation of soft tissues in maxillofacial region and neck. We performed 174 USG in 136 patients (73 with abscesses and phlegmons, 27 with acute lymphadenitis, 16 with inflamed cysts, 12 with parotitis, 3 with sialolithiasis and 5 with diseases, simulated acute inflammation). Ultrasound-guided aspirations performed in 35 patients. We considered USG to be useful diagnostic tool in acute inflammation of soft tissues in maxillofacial region and neck. USG allowed to determine

[Thrombophlebitis of the cavernous sinus and inappropriate ADH secretion syndrome].

The septic thrombosis of the cavernous sinus is a rare and serious disease which still occurs occasionally. The physician should be aware of this fact when treating infections of the nasal orbital areas. A case is presented in whom the septic thrombosis of the cavernous sinus is associated with the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone.

Impact of oral phosphate supplements and active vitamin D treatment on dentoalveolar features of X-linked hypophosphatemia.

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH), the most common form of genetic rickets (1/20000 births), results in the disruption of skeletal and dental mineralization. Oral features include dentinomalacia, spontaneous dental abscesses, and a high susceptibility to periodontitis. The association of phosphate supplementation and active vitamin D analogs (PO4/VitD) aims to counteract the consequences of FGF23 excess and the impaired production of active vitamin D. Despite a significant improvement in the long bone phenotype, the impact on dentoalveolar tissues remains poorly documented. Here, we aimed to det

Intracranial Infections Arising From an Odontogenic Infection: A Report of 2 Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Intracranial empyema is a rare but serious and life-threatening infection. It is an accumulation of purulent material in the subdural or extradural space leading to development of subdural empyema or intracranial epidural abscess, respectively. The incidence of morbidity and mortality is high because the diagnosis is often unsuspected. Infections of dental origin could be responsible for such condition. CASE REPORTS: A 22-year-old female and 30-year-old male patients, both with no significant medical history, presented with subdural empyema and intracranial epidural abscess, res

Osteomyelitis of a long bone due to Fusobacterium nucleatum and Actinomyces meyeri in an immunocompetent adult: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium species are uncommon causes of osteomyelitis. These organisms are normal flora of the oral cavity. Therefore, they mostly cause osteomyelitis of the head and neck. Hematogenous osteomyelitis at distant sites other than the head and neck has rarely been reported in pediatric or immunocompromised patients. Here, we report the first case of osteomyelitis of a long bone combined with a muscle abscess due to Fusobacterium nucleatum in an otherwise healthy adult. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old Korean man was admitted for pain and swelling of the right lower leg, which ha
