Questioning the boundary between pain and suffering.

Pain and suffering are important to patients, and therefore, their interaction is central to clinical care. It also encompasses issues at the forefront of pain neuroscience, evolution, epidemiology, and treatment development. While Medieval Europe understood pain as a religious problem and Enlightenment theorists framed pain as a social problem, over the past 200 years, we have come to see pain as a medical problem. The medical problem of pain was originally addressed through the diagnosis and treatment of disease, but Pain Medicine has made the causation and treatment of pain a separate focus

Self-report measure of psychological abuse of older adults.

PURPOSE: This study tested key psychometric properties of the Older Adult Psychological Abuse Measure (OAPAM), one self-report scale of the Older Adult Mistreatment Assessment (OAMA). DESIGN AND METHODS: Items and theory were developed in a prior concept mapping study. Subsequently, the measures were administered to 226 substantiated clients by 22 elder abuse staff from 7 agencies in a full-scale field test. The resulting database was used to estimate the psychometric properties of the OAPAM using the Rasch item response theory model and traditional validation techniques. Analyses included te

Linking dark triad traits to procrastination: A sequential mediation model involving time perspectives and passion.

This study investigates the cross-sectional associations between dark personality traits, time perspectives, passion, and procrastination. Drawing on Zimbardo's time perspective theory and Vallerand's dualistic model of passion, we examined how Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy relate to procrastination by means of temporal orientation and types of passion. A sample of 824 Spanish adults (ages 18-34), recruited via non-probabilistic quota sampling, completed validated measures of the target constructs. Structural equation modeling using a robust estimator revealed that subclinical

Profiles of theory of mind impairments and personality in clinical and community samples: integrating the alternative DSM-5 model for personality disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Deficits in theory of mind (ToM)-the ability to infer the mental states of others-have been linked to antagonistic traits in community samples. ToM deficits have also been identified in people with personality disorders (PD), although with conflicting evidence, partly due to the use of categorical diagnoses. The DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) provides an opportunity for a more precise understanding of the interplay between ToM abilities and personality pathology. Therefore, the study aims to determine whether and how individuals with diverse ToM profiles

Weight restoration in adolescent anorexia: parents' goal-directed processes.

BACKGROUND: Parent-led weight restoration is a key intervention of family-based treatment, an empirically supported treatment for adolescent anorexia. Successful outcomes in family-based treatment depend almost entirely on parental action, yet current understandings of this intervention are primarily informed by professional theory and expert perspectives. Comparatively little is known about parents' goals and actions while implementing the treatment, despite goal-directed action being an explicit framework of family-based treatment. This study seeks to investigate parents' involvement in weig

Unravelling antecedents and bidirectional impacts of nurse work rumination: a scoping review to enhance nurses' well-being and improve nursing quality.

BACKGROUND: Globally, work rumination is a common phenomenon related to nurse burnout. However, most existing studies focus on the single negative impacts of rumination, with less exploration of its dual effects and antecedents. Therefore, comprehensively exploring the effect of nurse work rumination and its influencing factors is crucial for enhancing the accuracy of nursing management. OBJECTIVES: Identify the antecedents and dual effects of nurse work rumination to deepen understanding of this phenomenon and provide references for formulating interventions that enhance nurses' well-being a

Social spatial structure and psychological mechanisms of seat-occupying behavior in university libraries-based on grounded theory analysis.

Occupying seats in university libraries is a situated practice shaped by the interaction of resource availability, environmental-psychological needs, institutional rules, and student responses under academic pressure. To reveal the underlying social logic of its emergence, grounded theory was employed to conduct coding analysis on 496 analyzable units derived from heterogeneous documentary, public-discourse, visual, and observational sources, and a multidimensional theoretical model of the social spatial structure of seat occupancy in university libraries was constructed. The analysis suggests

The fear of fear concept: stability, retest artefact and predictive power.

Three related issues concerning the theory, measurement and clinical utility of the fear of fear construct as operationalized by the Agoraphobic Cognitions and Bodily Sensations Questionnaires (Chambless, Caputo, Bright & Gallagher, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 52, 1090-1097, 1984) were addressed: stability of ranked scores, stability of means (retest effect) and predictive ability. In addition to measures assessing moods and enduring personality traits, the relevant fear of fear scales (and introducing a companion frequency measure to the BSQ-intensity scale) were administer

Hostile Attribution Bias as a Mediator of the Relationships of Psychopathy and Narcissism With Aggression.

Hostile attribution bias (HAB), the tendency to perceive hostility in ambiguous situations, has been linked to aggressive outcomes, such as reactive aggression. HAB has been connected to personality types involving hostile beliefs and reactive aggression, including narcissism and psychopathy. Specifically, secondary psychopathy is associated with HAB and reactive aggression. Despite research and theory connecting these constructs, few studies have examined if HAB mediates the relationships among psychopathy, narcissism, and aggression. The current study explores this possible mediation in an u

Monoclonal antibodies in advanced B-cell lymphomas.

In terms of object relations theory, borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a structural abnormality of identity, conflicting representations of self and others, and disorganization of attachment - a construct rooted in an individual's early experiences and central to the relationships established later in life. A special role in the formation of attachment style is attributed to the relationship with the caregiver and to difficult experiences or traumas from early developmental stages. These experiences not only provide the psychological basis for the development of an inse

From FoMO to clicks: Understanding young people's behavior toward retargeted advertisements.

The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence have led to highly personalized and programmatic advertising, using retargeted advertisements that incorporate Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) appeals to enhance customer engagement. Retargeted advertisements chase customers after they leave a website without conversion. This study uniquely investigates the persistent influence of retargeted advertisements on young people in the digital sphere, particularly when synergistically combined with FoMO appeals. It further applies the Theory of Planned Behavior to understand its impact. FoMO is conceptuali

Personality traits and adolescent anxiety: serial mediating roles of Red music cultural identification and self-identity.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescence is a critical period for personality formation and vulnerability to anxiety. Although personality traits are well-established predictors of adolescent anxiety, comparatively little research has examined the cultural mechanisms underlying this association. Drawing on culture-personality interaction theory, this study examined whether Red music cultural identification and self-identity sequentially mediate the association between Big Five personality traits and anxiety among Chinese adolescents. Specifically, we tested the pathway "Big Five personality traits → Red music c

Neural mechanisms of imitation and 'mirror neuron' functioning in autistic spectrum disorder.

An association between autistic spectrum disorder and imitative impairment might result from dysfunction in mirror neurons (MNs) that serve to relate observed actions to motor codings. To explore this hypothesis, we employed a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) protocol previously used to identify the neural substrate of imitation, and human MN function, to compare 16 adolescent males of normal intelligence with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and age, sex and IQ matched controls. In the control group, in accord with previous findings, we identified activity attributable to MNs in a

A functional MRI study of Theory of Mind in euthymic bipolar disorder patients.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the neural responses invoked in Theory of Mind (ToM) in euthymic bipolar patients as compared with healthy subjects. METHODS: This study examined 20 euthymic bipolar patients (11 males and 9 females) and 20 suitably matched healthy subjects using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while subjects were engaged in a ToM task. Within-scanner eye movements were monitored to ensure task engagement. The activation paradigm involved observing ToM and random-motion animated sequences in a block design. Both within group (ToM versus random motion) and random effects b

Interpersonal Predictors of Grief Among Caregivers of Persons With Dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Family caregivers of persons with dementia experience grief as the care recipients' dementia advances. Here, we explore how various interpersonal factors hypothesized to relate to prolonged grief disorder (PGD) (e.g., perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness) and our micro-social theory of grief (e.g., relational deprivation, self-esteem-related social support) relate to caregiver dementia-related grief. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Baseline caregiver data (N = 69) from an National Institute on Aging funded randomized pilot trial evaluating a digital reminiscence plat

Developing content for a mHealth intervention to promote postpartum retention in prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission programs and early infant diagnosis of HIV: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal attendance at postnatal clinic visits and timely diagnosis of infant HIV infection are important steps for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. We aimed to use theory-informed methods to develop text messages targeted at facilitating these steps. METHODS: We conducted five focus group discussions with health workers and women attending antenatal, postnatal, and PMTCT clinics to explore aspects of women's engagement in postnatal HIV care and infant testing. Discussion topics were informed by constructs of the Health Belief Model (HBM) and prior empiri

[Thoughts about constructing the theoretical framework of the knowledge system of acupuncture-moxibustion based on modern medicine].

In the present paper, it is first proposed that the acupuncture-moxibustion medicine can be divided into 2 branches, namely, traditional acupuncture-moxibustion and modern acupuncture-moxibustion, and then makes a comparative analysis on their connotations of the theoretical knowledge systems and cognitive methodology. It is believed that the conditions for the construction of the theoretical system of modern acupuncture-moxibustion are basically mature. It also puts forward that the three basic principles must be adhered to in the construction of the knowledge of theoretical framework of mode

The interpersonal circle and the interpersonal octagon: a confluence of ideas.

UNLABELLED: This paper compares and contrasts the underlying principles of two conceptual systems-the interpersonal circle and the interpersonal octagon-for classifying and measuring a person's interpersonal tendencies. Both systems have been represented by two intersecting axes: a horizontal one extending from close/warm involvement to distant/cold separation and a vertical one extending from upper/control to lower/submission. In both systems, intermediate axes have been inserted between these two main ones. Where the circle would appear to be concerned with traits, the octagon is concerned w

Kimura Disease in an Adult Indian Female, A Rare Presentation: A Novel Treatment with a Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Rural female adolescents experience unique circumstances to sexual health care and information as compared to urban adolescents. These circumstances are largely due to their more isolated geographical location and rural sociocultural factors. These circumstances may be contributing factors to an incidence of adolescent pregnancy that is higher in rural areas than in urban cities. Thus, this higher incidence of pregnancy may be due to the ways in which rural adolescents make decisions regarding engagement in sexual intercourse. However, the rural female adolescent sexual decision-
