Safety assessment of starch-based personal care products: Nanocapsules and pickering emulsions.

The safety profile of the ingredients used in topical dosage forms and its evaluation is an issue of utmost importance. A suitable equilibrium between safety and efficacy is crucial before promoting a dermatological product. The aim of this work was to assess the safety and biological effects of starch-based vehicles (St-BV) used in such products. The hazard, exposure and dose-response assessment were used to characterize the risk of each ingredient. The EpiSkin™ assay and human repeat insult patch tests were performed to compare the theoretical safety assessment to in vitro and in vivo data.

Identifying Persons at Highest Risk of Melanoma Using Self-Assessed Risk Factors.

Fusarium fujikuroi, a model organism for secondary metabolism in fungi, produces carotenoids, terpenoid pigments with antioxidant activity. Previous results indicate that carotenoid synthesis in F. fujikuroi is stimulated by light or by different stress conditions and downregulated by a RING finger protein encoded by carS gene. Here, we have analyzed the effects of three stressors, nitrogen scarcity, heat shock, and oxidative stress. We compared them with the effect of light in the wild type, a carS mutant that overproduces carotenoids, and its complemented strain. The assayed stressors increa

Methods for retrospective assessment of an unusual behavior of a person with diabetes: ebrietas alcoholica and/or hypoglycaemia?

Drunkenness and/or hypoglycaemia are possible causes of unusual behavior in a person with diabetes. The aim of this study was to demonstrate different methods which were used in two contradictory reviews of experts for retrospective assessment of a patient's condition in the course of a car crash: An insulin-treated driver caused a car accident resulting in injuries to two men. He was accused of the crime of damage to health as well as of driving under the influence of an addictive drug. One expert, having seen the police and medical reports, concluded the driver was influenced by alcohol at t

A modified cup scrub method for assessing the antibacterial substantivity of personal cleansing products.

An improved in vivo method for evaluating the antibacterial substantivity or residual effectiveness of bar soaps and other personal cleansing products is presented. The effectiveness of an antibacterial bar soap containing 1.5% 3, 4, 4'-trichlorocarbanilide (TCC) versus its soap vehicle was evaluated under simulated conditions considered optimal for bacterial growth, proliferation, and possible infection. A washout period to clear the skin of any antimicrobial agents previously used was followed by a treatment period in which the subjects washed one of their forearms with the antibacterial soa

Personal assessments of life-event stress and the near future onset of psychological symptoms.

This report presents data on prospective associations of life-event measures with psychological symptoms. Two issues in particular are addressed, the one relating to the causal influence of life-events on symptom onset, and the other to the role of personal interpretations of life-event impact in this association. The latter issue derives from a consideration of the cognitive view of stress. Prospective associations did, indeed, emerge and were strongest where the individual was permitted to personally assess the impact of encountered life-events. Temporal patterns of association varied with t

Occurrence, distribution and risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in Djibouti aquifer.

This study investigates the occurrence, distribution, and risks (ecological and human health) of 25 targeted pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in Djibouti's aquifer, a critical water resource. Nine stations were sampled during the dry season (June 2024) to study the thermosaline groundwater of the Djibouti volcanic aquifer system. Only six PPCPs, caffeine (CAF), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), levofloxacin (LEV), propranolol (PPL), tramadol (TMD), and fluoxetine (FLX), were detected. Urban areas showed higher contamination due to inadequate wastewater treatment. CAF, a marker of domes

Precision tumor-on-chip for personalized assessment of drug efficacy and immune cell delivery.

Tumor heterogeneity and drug resistance limit the efficacy of cancer therapies and highlight the need for patient-specific preclinical models. Here, we develop a microfluidic tumor-on-chip (TOC) platform that integrates patient-derived organoids with a functional endothelial barrier and utilizes liquid flow to recreate drug delivery from the vasculature into tumor tissue. This system enables evaluation of therapeutic efficacy and toxicity under physiologically relevant conditions. Additionally, the platform is utilized to assess immune cell migration induced by tumor-derived factors in the abs

Evaluating the use of silicone wristbands and urinary biomarkers to assess personal exposure to phthalates.

BACKGROUND: Biomonitoring studies for phthalates often rely on concentrations of urinary biomarkers, but there is interest in broadening exposure assessment methods, especially for use with vulnerable populations like pregnant women. Silicone wristbands (wristbands) are non-invasive passive sampling devices that have been shown as valid exposure assessment tools for a variety of chemicals and could provide a complementary method of phthalate exposure assessment. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between phthalates detected in wristbands and their corresponding urinary metabolite
