Neuromuscular rate of force development discriminates fallers in ambulatory persons with multiple sclerosis - an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Falls as well as fall-related injuries (e.g., bone fractures) are common in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). Whilst some studies have identified lower extremity maximal muscle strength (Fmax) as one among several risk factors, no previous studies have investigated the association between rate of force development (RFD; ability to generate a rapid rise in muscle force) and falls in pwMS. Not only is RFD substantially compromised (and more so than Fmax) in pwMS, studies involving other neurodegenerative populations have shown that RFD - to a greater extent than Fmax - is cruci

Impact of clinical symptoms and diagnosis: the electronic Person-Specific Outcome Measure (ePSOM) development programme.

INTRODUCTION: Regulatory bodies recommend that outcome measures used in Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials capture clinically meaningful changes for the trial participant. However, commonly used outcome measures do not reflect the individual's views on what matters to them individually. The aim of the electronic Person-Specific Outcome Measure (ePSOM) programme is to better understand what outcomes matter to patients in early Alzheimer's disease. METHODS: As part of the ePSOM programme, we designed and ran an online study to understand what matters to individuals when developing new tre

Analysis of health overseas development aid for internally displaced persons in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: There are an estimated 55 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) globally. IDPs commonly have worse health outcomes than host populations and other forcibly displaced populations such as refugees. Official development assistance (ODA) is a major source of the global financial response for health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including for populations affected by armed conflict and forced displacement. Analysis of ODA supports efforts to improve donor accountability, transparency and the equitable use of ODA. The aim of this study is to examine international dono

The Sustainable Development Goals: A framework for addressing participation of persons with complex communication needs in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Participation in society is the cornerstone to living a meaningful, connected, and healthy life. Persons with complex communication needs, however, often have restricted opportunities to participate in everyday contexts and situations. Reasons for this include societal attitudinal barriers, as well as limited knowledge and skills about augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to enhance participation. Enhancing participation of persons with complex communication needs requires a holistic and multi-faceted approach. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with their disa

Clinical Pharmacy Intervention for Persons Experiencing Homelessness: Evaluation of Patient Perspectives in Service Design and Development.

Persons experiencing homelessness have a high prevalence of severe mental health problems, alcohol dependence, substance misuse and infectious hepatitis C, and face up to twelve times higher mortality rates compared to the general population. They also face barriers to accessing healthcare. However, clinical pharmacy services are currently not available to homeless populations in England. The aim of this study was to conduct public involvement sessions with persons experiencing homelessness with a view to inform the design of patient-centred clinical pharmacy healthcare services. Design and development of mobility equipment for persons with disabilities in low-resource and tropical settings: bamboo wheelchairs.

PURPOSE: For persons with disabilities in low-resource and tropical settings, barriers to mobility and physical activity are steep. The aim of this study was to develop and test two low-cost, durable, sustainable, purpose-built wheelchair prototypes to support wheelchair users in low-resource and tropical settings. These bamboo wheelchairs, nicknamed African Chairs by Ghanaian daily manual wheelchair users who tested the devices, adopt two designs: an urban-targeted and a rural-targeted design. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The rural-targeted design incorporated stability as its key design property

Relationship between rapheal echogenicity and personality as possible markers of a disposition to develop depressive and anxiety disorders.

Early diagnosis of anxiety and depression may be facilitated by the use of neurobiological markers. In depression and panic disorder, transcranial sonography (TCS) has revealed decreased echogenicity of the brainstem raphe (BR). The aim of the present study was to detect whether decreased echogenicity of the BR correlates with personality features described in the five-dimension model, especially neuroticism. We examined 100 healthy volunteers using quantitative and qualitative TCS, the five-dimension revised NEO Personality Inventory, Beck´s scales of anxiety and depression, and the Social Re

Development and Evaluation of a Telephone Communication Protocol for the Delivery of Personalized Melanoma Genomic Risk to the General Population.

Communicating personalized genomic risk results for common diseases to the general population as a form of tailored prevention is novel and may require alternative genetic counseling service delivery models. We describe the development and evaluation of a communication protocol for disclosing melanoma genomic risk information to the asymptomatic general population and assess participants' satisfaction and acceptability. Participants (n = 117) were aged 22-69 years, living in New South Wales, Australia and unselected for family history. They provided a saliva sample and had genomic testing for

The antibody response to Cryptosporidium: development of a serological test and its use in a study of immunologically normal persons.

The demonstration of an immune response in the relatively newly recognised infection of human beings, cryptosporidiosis, is essential for assessing pathogenicity, for diagnostic purposes, and for epidemiological studies. In addition, serological methods may be applied to the detection and definitive identification of the parasite. Earlier reports were of histologically based methods with tissue from experimentally infected animals and did not define the nature of the response. The method described here is simple and rapid. It may be done in laboratories not equipped to perform the earlier meth

The allocation of patients with personality disorders to a suitable treatment approach: The development of a checklist based on patients' life stories.

Treatment assignment for patients with personality disorders (PDs) involves a complex process consisting of diagnostic assessment and deciding on the most appropriate psychotherapeutic treatment. This article describes the development of a checklist for systematic analysis of life stories to support reflective and transparent assignment of patients to either dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) or schema-focused therapy (SFT). In a first study, an email survey, focus group, and member check were conducted among eight clinical experts to identify relevant dimensions in life stories in patients

The Importance of Type D Personality in the Development of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMDs) and Depression in Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: a type D personality is a factor in a person's susceptibility to general mental stress, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although many studies were conducted on the relationships among stressful situations, an individual's personality, depression, and the occurrence of various diseases, e.g., cardiovascular disease or cancer, there are no analogous data on people with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). AIM: the assessment of TMDs and depression symptoms in students with type D personality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: the research was carried out with the participation of 240 p

Life events sometimes alter the trajectory of personality development: Effect sizes for 25 life events estimated using a large, frequently assessed sample.

OBJECTIVE: Personality changes across the life span. Life events, such as marriage, becoming a parent, and retirement, have been proposed as facilitating personality growth via the adoption of novel social roles. However, empirical evidence linking life events with personality development is sparse. Most studies have relied on few assessments separated by long time intervals and have focused on a single life event. In contrast, the content of life is composed of small, recurrent experiences (e.g., getting sick or practicing a hobby), with relatively few major events (e.g., childbirth). Small, …
