Knowledge and beliefs about transmission, prevention and control of lymphatic filariasis in rural areas of south India.

To identify the gaps in people's knowledge of lymphatic filariasis, we collected descriptive and quantitative information in rural areas of Tamil Nadu, South India. People are well aware of filariasis in their communities and recognize its different clinical manifestations. Only 9% of those with and 20% of those without the disease knew that filariasis is caused through mosquito bites; the rest attributed it to many other causes. People's knowledge about transmission and prevention of filariasis is also very poor. The study identifies the rationale for people's misconceptions about the disease

Ethical considerations for research involving pregnant women with HIV and their children.

Pregnant and postpartum women with HIV (PPWH) and their children have historically been excluded from certain research in the name of protection. This may, however, inadvertently exacerbate health disparities. While calls for their inclusion have increased, additional practical guidance to achieve this goal is needed. Within this editorial, we provide practical recommendations for enabling PPWH and their children to participate ethically in research by identifying and addressing issues that potentially put them at risk. We ground this discussion in a framework that considers the various vulner

Borderline personality features and integration of positive and negative thoughts about significant others.

Taking the bad with the good is a necessity of life, and people who readily integrate thoughts of their loved one's flaws with thoughts of their more positive attributes maintain more stable, satisfying relationships. Borderline personality disorder, however, is often characterized by interpersonal perceptions that fluctuate between extremes of good and bad. We used a timed judgment task to examine information processing about significant others in individuals high in borderline personality features relative to healthy individuals and those high in avoidant personality features. In Study 1, wh

Outcomes for women with co-occurring disorders and trauma: program and person-level effects.

Six-month outcomes are evaluated from a 9-site quasi-experimental study of women with mental health and substance use disorders who have experienced physical or sexual abuse who enrolled in either comprehensive, integrated, trauma-informed, and consumer/survivor/recovering person-involved services (N = 1023) or usual care (N = 983). Mental health, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and substance use outcomes are assessed with multilevel regression models, controlling for program and personal characteristics. Person-level variables predict outcomes independent of intervention condition and, to a s

Diabetic ketoacidosis: evaluation and treatment.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is characterized by a serum glucose level greater than 250 mg per dL, a pH less than 7.3, a serum bicarbonate level less than 18 mEq per L, an elevated serum ketone level, and dehydration. Insulin deficiency is the main precipitating factor. Diabetic ketoacidosis can occur in persons of all ages, with 14 percent of cases occurring in persons older than 70 years, 23 percent in persons 51 to 70 years of age, 27 percent in persons 30 to 50 years of age, and 36 percent in persons younger than 30 years. The case fatality rate is 1 to 5 percent. About one-third of all cases are

COVID-19 Vaccine Literacy Among Black Pregnant and Postpartum Women in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Black pregnant and postpartum women in the USA are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic yet have low vaccination coverage rates. Low levels of vaccine literacy contribute vaccine hesitancy and low vaccination rates, especially in racialized populations that face multiple dimensions of systemic racism and inequalities in access to quality health information and services. Guided by the Public Health Critical Race Praxis, we examined COVID-19 vaccine literacy and information sources among Black pregnant and postpartum women. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured in-de

Personal information of adolescents on the Internet: A quantitative content analysis of MySpace.

Many youth have recently embraced online social networking sites such as MySpace (myspace.com) to meet their social and relational needs. While manifold benefits stem from participating in such web-based environments, the popular media has been quick to demonize MySpace even though an exponentially small proportion of its users have been victimized due to irresponsible or naive usage of the technology it affords. Major concerns revolve around the possibility of sexual predators and pedophiles finding and then assaulting adolescents who carelessly or unwittingly reveal identifiable information

Sleep Disorders and Sleep Disturbances in Persons with Multiple Sclerosis: A Population-Based Matched Case-Control Study in Denmark.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse sleep is common in multiple sclerosis (MS). Population-based studies including adequate control groups are lacking. We hypothesized that the prevalence of sleep disorders and other sleep disturbances would be higher in persons with MS than in controls. METHODS: We conducted a population-based study linking individual-level data from the Danish MS Registry (n = 21,943 persons with MS) and the Danish Population Registry (n = 109,715 matched controls) with information on sleep disorders from the Danish National Patient Registry and other sleep disturbances assessed by dispe

Impact of Off Periods on Persons With Parkinson Disease and Care Partners: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The definition of off periods proposed in 2018 emphasizes functional disability as part of the off period experience, but limited research to date investigates the functional impact of off periods on persons with Parkinson disease and care partners. This study aimed to investigate the impact of off periods on both persons with Parkinson disease and care partners through interviews of dyads living with motor and/or nonmotor fluctuations. METHODS: Investigators performed interviews separately with persons with Parkinson disease and care partners using a semistructured questionnaire.
