The article presents research findings on the institutionalization of the insane in five provinces of colonial Brazil: São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Maranhão, Pernambuco, and Pará. Reports by the presidents of these provinces, written during the Segundo Reinado (1846-89), were analyzed. In these documents, insanity is viewed as a special disease, and it is indicated that the mad are not meant to be kept among other ill people, much less in jail. The reports also register societal pressure to have such people committed. These politicians adopted the medical discourse on insanity, but their desc

INTRODUCTION: Suicidal ideation and behaviors are a leading cause of disability worldwide. Approximately 90 % of suicide completers have a diagnosable mood disorder. Extant literature reports rumination mediates functional impairment across mood disorders. Herein, we report the association between rumination and suicidality amongst persons with psychiatric disorders and healthy controls.
METHODS: Our systematic review and meta-analysis included relevant articles retrieved from Web of Science, OVID and PubMed from inception to March 20, 2024. Random effects model was used to calculate the corr…

OBJECTIVE: Psychiatric disability has been defined largely from measures that focus on serious mental illness. This practice may have led to substantial underestimation of the total impact of mental disorders on community health. In this study a generic measure of mental health-related disability was used to examine disabilities attributable to various common mental disorders.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing, a household survey of 10,641 adults that assessed participants for 14 DSM-IV disorders with use of the Composite International

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner homicide (IPH) is a global public health problem. One study conducted over 66 countries found that 13.5% of all homicides and 38.6% of female homicides were committed by an intimate partner. In South Africa, there were no published studies that examine alleged perpetrators of IPH that were referred for forensic psychiatric observation.
AIM: To describe the profile of accused persons referred for forensic psychiatric observation for a charge of murder or attempted murder of their intimate partners. Certain characteristics were further examined according to the psyc

Background/Objectives: Adults with ADHD are more likely to develop other mental disorders. There are few data on the prevalence of ADHD among nonpsychotic patients treated with psychotherapy in day-care centers. This paper aims to assess persons with ADHD in this specific population and to compare psychiatric comorbidities in groups with and without ADHD. Methods: A total of 152 persons (men and women aged 18-58 years [M = 33; SD = 9.56]) were diagnosed according to the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0. (MINI). Personality disorders were assessed with SCID-II. ADHD was diagnos

Anhedonia is a salient transdiagnostic psychiatric symptom associated with increased illness severity and chronicity. Anhedonia is also present to varying degrees in non-clinical cohorts. Here, we sought to examine factors influencing expression of anhedonia. Participants (N = 335) were recruited through the Nathan Kline Institute-Rockland Sample, an initiative to deeply phenotype a large community sample across the lifespan. Utilizing a data-driven approach, we evaluated associations between anhedonia severity, indexed by Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS), and 20 physical, developmental,

Family diseases represent a risk factor in the multifactorial etiology model regarding the genesis of eating disorders. In German-speaking countries only a few studies give attention to this topic. The aim of this study is to investigate the occurrence frequency of psychiatric disorders and personality styles among parents of juvenile patients with eating disorders. Furthermore a comparison between parents of patients with restrictive anorexia nervosa (AN-R) and parents of patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) is carried out. Psychiatric disorders listed on Axis I and Axis II of DSM-IV (American

Much of the contemporary literature on headache disorders focuses on migraine headaches, despite the fact that tension-type headache (TTH) is highly prevalent and can be as debilitating as migraines. This article reviews the current literature on prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders in TTH populations, psychologic factors associated with TTH, and psychiatric disorders and their relationships with treatment outcomes in TTH. Key conclusions of this review include 1) prevalence rates of TTH vary across clinical and population-based samples; 2) greater TTH chronicity is associated with increa

Homocystinuria commonly affects the central nervous system (CNS), primarily as mental retardation, seizures, and stroke. Case reports have long suggested a predisposition to schizophrenia, but no careful study of predisposition to psychiatric illness has been performed. Accordingly, we evaluated 63 persons with homocystinuria due to cystathionine beta-synthase deficiency for psychiatric disturbance, intelligence, evidence of other CNS problems, and responsiveness to vitamin B6. The overall rate of clinically significant psychiatric disorders was 51%, predominated by four diagnostic categories:

BACKGROUND: Historically, the function of psychiatry and psychotherapy in the healthcare treatment of transsexualism has been impaired by the basic assumption that non-conforming gender experiences and behavior are automatically considered as expressions of psychopathology.
OBJECTIVE: In line with revision of the diagnostic criteria and changing standards of care and treatment recommendations, the therapeutic relationship between mental healthcare professionals and transgender individuals is critically discussed aiming at providing a needs-based psychiatric and psychotherapeutic treatment and

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity of depressive and anxiety disorders is common and remains incompletely comprehended. This paper summarizes findings from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA) regarding prevalence, temporal sequence, course and longitudinal patterns; sociodemographic, vulnerability and neurobiological indicators; and functional, somatic and mental health indicators of comorbidity.
METHODS: Narrative synthesis of earlier NESDA based papers on comorbidity (n=76).
RESULTS: Comorbidity was the rule in over three-quarter of subjects with depressive and/or anxiety disorder

Around 20-25% of the current offenders in Cook County Jail of Chicago Illinois are mentally ill. Each one of these offenders had to be named competent to stand trial when they were first being tried in court. The majority of these offenders that were considered incompetent to stand trial (IST) had to go through the competency restoration process where they were housed in a state hospital and received treatment until the court could deem them to be competent to stand trial. Many defendants with minor offenses that were eventually deemed competent to stand trial, stood trial and were found guilt

A high prevalence of psychiatric illness exists in persons with mental retardation. Among children with mild to moderate retardation, psychiatric illnesses resemble those seen in the general population. Major affective disorders, ADHD, and conduct disorder are common and respond to the same interventions used in children without mental retardation. Persons with severe to profound retardation are more likely to engage in stereotypies and self-injurious behaviors. In addition, certain specific syndromes associated with mental retardation present with particular neurocognitive, behavioral, and ps

Leisure or recreational rehabilitation is not much developed in psychiatric rehabilitation. I present some definitions and a (very) brief history of the notion of leisure, as well as the role of leisure in health. I then describe a novel classification of leisure activities relevant to people with psychiatric disabilities. Following that, I conceptualize the process of psychiatric leisure rehabilitation, illustrated by a case study. I conclude with the benefits of psychiatric leisure rehabilitation and with suggestions for further study and development in this field. Leisure or recreational ac

Many legal jurisdictions offer some form of hospital diversion and disposal as an alternative to incarceration in prison for mentally disordered offenders. Such diversion is commonly understood as offering a non-punitive alternative in terms of sentencing decisions. However, complete loss of responsibility with respect to acts of violence is rare and indicative of extreme degrees of mental disorder. This raises challenges for sentencers when considering disposal options. From the perspective of the patient and healthcare providers while hospital may be framed as non-punitive, it still involves
