[Importance of biomicroscopy in the determination of density of cataract before phacoemulsification].

Biomicroscopy was used to examine cataracts before phacoemulsification in 820 patients aged 2 to 83. It helped assess the lens solidity from the intensity of the nucleus staining in the majority of cases. In senile cataracts the intensity of the nucleus staining increases with age, as is the length of ultrasonic exposure necessary for the nucleus emulsification, whereas in congenital or traumatic cataracts such a correlation is not observed. The authors necessitate the development of a method for objective assessment of the cataract solidity before surgery.

Examination of phacoemulsification tips after different numbers of cataract surgeries.

To compare unused phacoemulsification tips and those used different times with different techniques of cataract surgery (divide and conquer and chop), in vivo phacoemulsifications were performed with tips of different numbers of operation. These were compared with the same number of sterilized-only and unused tips with the help of an atomic force microscope. Comparison of roughness values (Sa, Sq), geometric and measurable flange length and surface was also performed (profile length %, area %). The differences between the parameters that can be measured during surgery (average ultrasound perce…

[Focusing on issues about phacoemulsification lens extraction combined with goniosynechialysis].

Angle closure is a basic pathological process in primary angle-closure glaucoma. Unlike filtration anti-glaucoma surgery, goniosynechialysis is a treatment for the cause of primary angle-closure glaucoma by reconstructing the physiological aqueous outflow pathway. In the past 10 years, phacoemulsification lens extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation in combination with goniosynechialysis for the treatment of primary angle-closure glaucoma has become a hot topic of clinical research and discussion. This article points out the issues that need to be paid attention to in t…

Role of intrastromal vancomycin in recalcitrant corneal abscess after phacoemulsification.

Side port infection and corneal abscess after cataract surgery can produce devastating outcomes. Topical antibacterial drugs are the mainstay in management of these cases. Although intrastromal antifungal agents are an established modality for fungal keratitis, such use of antibacterial agents is rarely reported due to better pharmacokinetic profile of antibacterial agents. We report a case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus corneal abscess following phacoemulsification that responded to intrastromal vancomycin injection in addition to conventional therapy. This case of postphacoemul…
