Delay-Induced Hopf Bifurcation and Entropy-Based Distributional Uncertainty in a Stochastic Time-Delay Pheromone Feedback Model of Ant Foraging Dynamics.

This study proposes a stochastic time-delay pheromone feedback model to describe ant foraging dynamics, and investigates how response delays and environmental noise jointly induce stochastic oscillations and reorganize the system's probabilistic structure. By employing near-Hopf center-mode projection and stochastic averaging, we derive the first-order stochastic amplitude equation and analyze the stochastic dynamical properties near the deterministic delay-induced Hopf bifurcation. Subsequently, normalized Shannon entropy and Jensen-Shannon divergence, computed relative to a pre-Hopf stochast

Effect of trap color, pheromone and kairomone release rates, and α-pinene and limonene enantiomers on the capture of Monochamus saltuarius Gebler (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae).

Monochamus saltuarius (Gebler) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a significant forest pest that spreads pine wood nematodes [Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner & Bührer) Nickle) (Aphelehncida: Parasitaphelenchidae)] across northern Eurasia, including South Korea. The Korea Forest Service recommends the use of pheromone traps to monitor the spread of this insect vector. However, to improve the accuracy of occurrence monitoring and enhance control through mass trapping, it is necessary to increase the capture efficiency of pheromone traps. In this study, we evaluated various pheromone trap conditio

Infection of Trichinella spiralis Affects the Reproductive Capacity of ICR/CD-1 Male Mice by Reducing the Urine Pheromone Contents and Sperm Quality.

Female mice can discriminate the urinary odors of male mice due to their olfactory acuity. Parasitic infection or subclinical infection can decrease the odor attractiveness of male mice and finally lead to aversion or avoidance responses in odor selection for female mice. Trichinella spiralis is a kind of tissue-parasitizing nematode that causes trichinellosis, a zoonotic parasitic disease that spreads throughout the world. However, the reproductive injury caused by Trichinella spiralis infection was not fully revealed. In this study, we explored the effect of Trichinella spiralis infection on

Regional Variation in Captures of Male Paralobesia viteana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in Monitoring Traps in Michigan Is Not Due to Geographical Variation in Male Response to Pheromone.

Paralobesia viteana (Clemens), grape berry moth, is a major pest of grapes in Eastern North America. There is substantial regional variation in the response of male P. viteana to sex pheromone-baited monitoring traps in Michigan vineyards. Males are readily captured in traps in the southwest region, whereas in the northwest very few males are captured, despite larval infestation in grapes in both regions. Y-tube olfactometers and field experiments determined the response of male moths from northern and southern populations to the pheromone blend used in monitoring lures and to females from bot

A comparison of the effects of male pheromone priming and optogenetic inhibition of accessory olfactory bulb forebrain inputs on the sexual behavior of estrous female mice.

Previous research has shown that repeated testing with a stimulus male is required for ovariectomized, hormone-primed female mice to become sexually receptive (show maximal lordosis quotients; LQs) and that drug-induced, epigenetic enhancement of estradiol receptor function accelerated the improvement in LQs otherwise shown by estrous females with repeated testing. We asked whether pre-exposure to male pheromones ('pheromone priming') would also accelerate the improvement in LQs with repeated tests and whether optogenetic inhibition of accessory olfactory bulb (AOB) projection neurons could in…

A Scientific Basis for Humanae Vitae and Natural Law: The Role of Human Pheromones on Human Sexual Behavior Preferences by Oral Contraceptives and the Abortifacient Effects of Oral Contraceptives.

This article will review Humanae Vitae's predictions of the effect of oral contraceptives (the pill) on male-female relationships and societal behaviors. A scientific, biochemical basis underpinning these predictions is made. Evidence of human pheromones will be given. Evidence for the changes in male and female pheromones caused by the pill is given. Observational and experimental evidence of changes in primate and human behaviors by pheromones is detailed. The role these changes have caused in attractiveness and selection of mate by both males and females in preferences concerning major hist…

Wavelength-Specific Artificial Light Disrupts Calling Behavior, Pheromone Blend Composition, and Mating Success in the Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Artificial light at night (ALAN) and the broader use of artificial light in agriculture are increasingly recognized to affect the physiology and behavior of nocturnal insects, yet their influence on pheromone-mediated reproductive communication in economically important insect pest species remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of artificial illumination on calling behavior, sex pheromone production, blend composition, and mating success in the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda, under both laboratory and semi-field conditions. Virgin females were exposed during the scot

Identification, Synthesis, Behavioral Activity, and Field Assessment of Components of the Female-Produced Sex Pheromone of Helopeltis theivora (Hemiptera: Miridae), a Devastating Pest of Tea.

Helopeltis theivora is a major pest of tea, cocoa and cashew, and increasing insecticide resistance highlights the need for sustainable alternatives such as pheromones. Previous studies failed to identify female pheromone components attractive to males in the field. Re-examination of female extracts by gas chromatography with electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) revealed a single active compound, identified by GC-MS as octyl 3-(butanoyloxy)butanoate (III). Enantioselective analysis showed females produce both (3R)-and (3S)-enantiomers. Two related but EAD-inactive compounds, hexyl (3R)-3-(…

Response to a Synthetic Pheromone Source by OX4319L, a Self-Limiting Diamondback Moth (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) Strain, and Field Dispersal Characteristics of its Progenitor Strain.

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is a global pest that infests vegetable and field crops within the Brassica family. A genetically engineered strain of P. xylostella, OX4319L, carrying a 'self-limiting' gene, has shown potential for managing P. xylostella populations, using sustained releases of OX4319L male moths. In order for such a strain to provide control, the transgenic individuals must exhibit attraction to female P. xylostella sex pheromone and adequate dispersal in the field. In this study, we tested these key traits. First, we compared the resp

Integrative transcriptomic and functional analysis reveals fatty acyl elongases involved in sex pheromone biosynthesis in rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Lepidoptera: Pyraloidea).

Elongases are essential enzymes in the biosynthesis of sex pheromones in many lepidopteran species, where together with desaturases they determine pheromone precursor carbon skeletons and contribute to species-specific chemical communication. Despite their presumed importance, no fatty acyl elongase involved in lepidopteran sex pheromone biosynthesis has been functionally characterized to date. The rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, utilizes a blend of C18 monounsaturated aldehydes and alcohols as its sex pheromone, implying a critical elongation step from C16 precursors. Here, transcr…

Distribution of Virulence and Pheromone-Associated Genes Among Colonizing Enterococcus faecalis Isolates Recovered Through Routine VRE Screening in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Background: Enterococcus faecalis is a common gastrointestinal commensal and an important opportunistic pathogen. While vancomycin resistance is well characterized, data on virulence-associated genes in colonizing isolates remain limited. Methods: A total of 44 colonizing E. faecalis isolates recovered from routine VRE screening (rectal swabs) were included in the study. The presence of the virulence-associated genes asa, esp, eep, ccf, and cpd was investigated by PCR. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using standardized methods, and isolates were subsequently classified as ei

Field and Laboratory Studies for Predicting Annual Generations of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) Using Sex Pheromone Traps and Cumulative Heat Unit Measurements in Egypt.

The Egyptian cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) is a major polyphagous pest in vegetable and cotton crops. Accurate forecasting of its field generations is essential for effective integrated pest management (IPM). Forecasting its generations in the field is traditionally based on the trapping of males, but the use of temperature sums (degree-days, DD) could offer a robust alternative for triggering pest control interventions. The aim of this study was to monitor the flight activity and calculate the summations of degree-days, as well as to compare expected generation peaks and t

Multiwavelength Optical Rotation Detection: An Effective Approach for the Recognition of Analytical and Semi-Preparative HPLC Enantioseparation of the Chiral Pheromone Olean and Its Stereochemical Characterization.

Olean is the chiral spiroacetal sex pheromone of the female olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae. Laboratory tests have demonstrated that the (R)-(-)-olean enantiomer is active on males, whereas females respond to (S)-(+)-olean. Here we present the first HPLC enantioseparation of olean using polysaccharide derivatives as chiral stationary phases and a polarimetric detector equipped with a micro-flow cell capable of detecting optical rotation at six different wavelengths. Unlike blind UV detection, the polarimetric detector allows the chiral spiroacetal, which lacks a chromophore, to be detected as

Compartmentalized co-cultivation and temporal transcriptomics reveal SexM-mediated crosstalk between pheromone signaling and metabolic reprogramming in the industrial carotenoid producer Blakeslea trispora.

Sexual reproduction in industrial β-carotene producer Blakeslea trispora requires (+)/(-) mating-type interaction through diffusible trisporoid pheromones, triggering carotenogenesis as a secondary metabolic response. However, the molecular mechanisms linking pheromone perception to mating-type-specific metabolic reprogramming remain unclear due to technical constraints. Here, we established a compartmentalized co-cultivation system to physically separate (-)-type hyphae from (+) partners while retaining diffusible metabolite exchange. The system allows transcriptomic analysis for each mating …

Effects of a synthetic feline facial pheromone analogue (F3, Feliway®) on stress and cardiovascular parameters during clinical examination in cats: a prospective crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Veterinary examinations in cats are essential for clinical assessment; however, stress often interferes with handling and data reliability. This study evaluated the cardiovascular and behavioral effects of a synthetic feline facial pheromone (F3) during cardiovascular examinations. A prospective repeated-measurements study was performed with 21 healthy mixed-breed cats over one year of age, non-aggressive and free of comorbidities. Each cat was assessed without pheromone exposure (T0) and after exposure (T1) using diffuser and spray formulations. Cats were transported in carriers a

Transcriptome-Wide Identification of Cytochrome P450s in Tea Black Tussock Moth (Dasychira baibarana) and Candidate Genes Involved in Type-II Sex Pheromone Biosynthesis.

The tea black tussock moth (Dasychira baibarana), a devastating pest in Chinese tea plantations, uses a ternary Type-II pheromone blend containing (3Z,6Z)-cis-9,10-epoxyhenicosa-3,6-diene (Z3,Z6,epo9-21:H), (3Z,6Z,11E)-cis-9,10-epoxyhenicosa-3,6,11-triene (Z3,Z6,epo9,E11-21:H), and (3Z,6Z)-henicosa-3,6-dien-11-one (Z3,Z6-21:11-one) for mate communication. To elucidate the P450 candidates associated with the biosynthesis of these sex pheromone components, we sequenced the female D. baibarana pheromone gland and the abdomen excluding the pheromone gland. A total of 75 DbP450s were identified. Fu

Synthetic sex-aggregation pheromone of Lutzomyia longipalpis, the South American sand fly vector of Leishmania infantum, attracts males and females over long-distance.

BACKGROUND: In South America the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis is the predominant vector of Leishmania infantum, the parasite that causes canine and human visceral leishmaniasis. Co-location of synthetic male sex-aggregation pheromone with an insecticide provided protection against canine seroconversion, parasite infection, reduced tissue parasite loads, and female sand fly densities at households. Optimising the sex-aggregation pheromone + insecticide intervention requires information on the distance over which female and male Lu. longipalpis would be attracted to the synthetic pheromone in
