Brain activity during phonation in healthy female singers with supraglottic compression: an fMRI pilot study.

This pilot study evaluated the usability of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to detect brain activation during phonation in healthy female singers with supraglottic compression. Four healthy female classical singers (mean age: 26 years) participated in the study. All subjects had normal vocal folds and vocal characteristics and showed supraglottic compression. The fMRI experiment was carried out using a block design paradigm. Brain activation during phonation and exhalation was analyzed using Brain Voyager software (Brain Innovation B.V., Maastricht, The Netherlands). An fMRI data …

Human brain activation during phonation and exhalation: common volitional control for two upper airway functions.

Phonation is defined as a laryngeal motor behavior used for speech production, which involves a highly specialized coordination of laryngeal and respiratory neuromuscular control. During speech, brief periods of vocal fold vibration for vowels are interspersed by voiced and unvoiced consonants, glottal stops and glottal fricatives (/h/). It remains unknown whether laryngeal/respiratory coordination of phonation for speech relies on separate neural systems from respiratory control or whether a common system controls both behaviors. To identify the central control system for human phonation, we …

[High speed cinematographic analysis of subglottal mucosal vibration during experimentally induced phonation in excised larynges].

Twenty-seven excised canine larynges and two excised human larynges fixed on a wall of a specially constructed glass box, were blown on and the subglottal mucosal vibrations were photographed using high speed cinematography from the tracheal side. Each film was repeatedly projected at normal speed and analyzed frame by frame. Mucosal upheaval appeared between the anterior commissure and the vocal process. The mucosal wave or "traveling wave" started from the mucosal upheaval and propagated medially and upward. The mucosal upheaval vibrated with a small amplitude and with an earlier phase than

Study of Glottal Attack Time and Glottal Offset Time in Neurogenic Voice Disorders During Sustained Phonation.

OBJECTIVE: Neurogenic voice disorders like adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD), vocal tremor, and vocal paresis/paralysis impact the neuromuscular control of the phonatory system, which might lead to an impaired phonation onset/offset. Utilizing laryngeal high-speed videoendoscopy (HSV), this study investigates the glottal attack time (GAT) and glottal offset time (GOT) during soft, habitual, and hard glottal attack modalities in sustained phonation for several neurogenic voice disorders. METHODS: HSV data and audio recordings were obtained simultaneously from 14 participants with neurogenic v…

High-Speed Image Analysis Comparing Loading of Vocal Folds During Coughing and Phonation: A Case Study.

PURPOSE: Coughing is related to voice problems, since it involves firm glottal closure, fast glottal opening, and high subglottic pressure and flow rate. In this study, the glottal area variation and movements of laryngeal structures during coughing and phonation are compared. METHODS: High-speed laryngoscopy recordings were made of a normophonic male participant with a healthy larynx producing a neutral vowel and coughing. Oral air pressure was registered in a mouthpiece, through which an endoscope was inserted into the pharynx. Electroglottography, acoustic, and pressure signals were record…

Optimizing Aerodynamic Vocal Parameters by Varying Supraglottic Pressure Using "Controlled Supraglottic Pressure Phonation" in Healthy Subjects.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to introduce a novel method for semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) therapy called "controlled supraglottic pressure phonation," determine the mechanism by which supraglottic pressure contributes to lowering impedance during SOVT therapy, and provide the optimal supraglottic pressure range for SOVT exercises. METHODS: Twenty-five human subjects were assigned to one of five supraglottic pressure levels, 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 cmH2O, which were controlled through a continuous positive airway pressure device. Subjects were asked to phonate during both a short- a…

Differences of Electroglottographical Contact Quotients between Connected Speech and Sustained Phonation in Clinical Measurement of Voice.

INTRODUCTION: In clinical practice, sustained phonation is mostly used for acoustic voice measurements, while perceptual evaluation is based on connected speech. Since sustained phonation could be associated with the use of the singing voice, and since vocal registers are more relevant for singing rather than speech, it is unclear if vocal registers contribute to observable vocal fold contact differences between sustained phonation and speech. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sustained phonation (vowel [a] on comfortable pitch and loudness) and connected speech (German text: Der Nordwind und die Sonne) …

Synthetic mucus for an ex vivo phonation setup: Creation, application, and effect on excised porcine larynges.

Laryngeal mucus hydrates and lubricates the deformable tissue of the vocal folds and acts as a boundary layer with the airflow from the lungs. However, the effects of the mucus' viscoelasticity on phonation remain widely unknown and mucus has not yet been established in experimental procedures of voice research. In this study, four synthetic mucus samples were created on the basis of xanthan with focus on physiological frequency-dependent viscoelastic properties, which cover viscosities and elasticities over 2 orders of magnitude. An established ex vivo experimental setup was expanded by a rep…

Impact of Nonmodal Phonation on Estimates of Subglottal Pressure From Neck-Surface Acceleration in Healthy Speakers.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of nonmodal phonation on estimates of subglottal pressure (Ps) derived from the magnitude of a neck-surface accelerometer (ACC) signal and to confirm previous findings regarding the impact of vowel contexts and pitch levels in a larger cohort of participants. Method Twenty-six vocally healthy participants (18 women, 8 men) were asked to produce a series of p-vowel syllables with descending loudness in 3 vowel contexts (/a/, /i/, and /u/), 3 pitch levels (comfortable, high, and low), and 4 elicited phonatory conditions (modal, breath…

Functional connectivity of PAG with core limbic system and laryngeal cortico-motor structures during human phonation.

Previous studies in animals and humans suggest the periaqueductal grey region (PAG) is a final integration station between the brain and laryngeal musculature during phonation. To date, a limited number of functional magnetic neuroimaging (fMRI) studies have examined the functional connectivity of the PAG during volitional human phonation. An event-related, stimulus-induced, volitional movement paradigm was used to examine neural activity during sustained vocalization in neurologically healthy adults and was compared to controlled exhalation through the nose. The contrast of vocalization great…

Phonation threshold pressure and the elastic shear modulus: comparison of two-mass model calculations with experiments.

Ishizaka and Flanagan's classic two-mass model of vocal fold motion is applied to small oscillations where the equations become linear and the aerodynamic driving force is described by an effective stiffness. The solution of these equations includes an analytic formula for the two eigenfrequencies; this shows that conjugate imaginary parts of the frequencies emerge beyond eigenvalue synchronization and that one of the imaginary parts becomes zero at a pressure signaling the instability associated with the onset of threshold. Using recent measurements by Fulcher et al. of intraglottal pressure

Effects of muscle tension dysphonia on tone phonation: acoustic and perceptual studies in Vietnamese female teachers.

Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is a hyperfunctional voice disorder commonly seen in professional voice users. To date, published acoustic st … erception was poorer for tones with extensive fundamental frequency variation and without a typical phonation type. The results in this group of teachers supported our hypothesis that MTD impairs lexical tone phonation.

High-speed registration of phonation-related glottal area variation during artificial lengthening of the vocal tract.

Vocal exercises that increase the vocal tract impedance are widely used in voice training and therapy. The present study applies a versatile methodology to investigate phonation during varying artificial extension of the vocal tract. Two males and one female phonated into a hard-walled plastic tube (phi 2 cm), whose physical length was randomly pair-wise changed between 30 cm, 60 cm and 100 cm. High-speed image (1900 f/sec) sequences of the vocal folds were obtained via a rigid endoscope. Acoustic and electroglottographic signals (EGG) were recorded. Oral pressure during shuttering of the tube…

Cough offset schwa as a means of eliciting initial phonation in functional aphonia: two case reports.

The use of the schwa vowel at cough offset is an automatic production that can be easily prolonged and modified as a phonation-producing device without requesting initial voluntary phonation on the part of the patient. It is presented as a clinical method that was successful for the author with two female patients presenting functional aphonia. The technique lends support to the suggestions by Aronson (1969) and Boone (1971) that the symptomatic approach can be successful with the functional aphonic patient. The clinician should be mindful of the fact that in certain cases of functional aphoni…
