Visual stimulus characteristics that elicit tracking and striking in the praying mantises Parasphendale affinis, Popa spurca and Sphodromantis lineola.

We tested three species of praying mantis, Parasphendale affinis, Popa spurca and Sphodromantis lineola, with computer-generated stimuli that differed in size, contrast, configuration and movement pattern to determine the effects of these parameters on visual tracking and striking behavior. Overall, black disks moving erratically against a white background were strong releasers of both behaviors. When stimulus presentation order was randomized by size, P. affinis and P. spurca struck at progressively higher rates as the stimuli enlarged up to 44 deg; S. lineola struck most at intermediate size

Optic flow processing for the assessment of object movement during ego movement.

The vast majority of research on optic flow (retinal motion arising because of observer movement) has focused on its use in heading recovery and guidance of locomotion. Here we demonstrate that optic flow processing has an important role in the detection and estimation of scene-relative object movement during self movement. To do this, the brain identifies and globally discounts (i.e., subtracts) optic flow patterns across the visual scene-a process called flow parsing. Remaining motion can then be attributed to other objects in the scene. In two experiments, stationary observers viewed radial

Phasic response of the photoperiodic clock to wavelength and intensity of light in the redheaded bunting, Emberiza bruniceps.

We have investigated phasic response of the photoperiodic clock to wavelength (color) and intensity of light in the male redheaded bunting (Emberiza bruniceps). Two experiments were performed. Experiment I examined whether varying the wavelength and intensity of first (entraining, E) and/or second (inducing, I) light pulse will alter the effects of a skeleton photoperiod. Birds were subjected for a period of 6 weeks to skeleton photoschedules (6L:5D:1L:12D; 6 h E-light pulse, 1 h I-light pulse) containing either an E-pulse at 5 or 20 lx coupled with I-pulse at 100 lx, or an E-pulse at 100 lx,

Photic sneeze reflex in nephropathic cystinosis.

Photic induced sneeze is a reflex that occurs in certain individuals after exposure to bright light. Cystinosis is an autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism in which nonprotein cystine accumulates within lysosomes. The pathognomonic ocular manifestation of cystinosis is corneal crystal deposition. We observed photic induced sneezes during ophthalmoscopic examination in five of 19 patients with nephropathic cystinosis (26%). We report on this observation and discuss possible pathophysiological mechanisms for photic induced sneezing in cystinosis.

Focusing on color: How the eye chooses which wavelength to see best.

Humans can see in exquisite detail despite the fact that the eyes' optics can only focus light at a single wavelength at a time. It remains an open question what wavelength is brought into best focus by the human eye. Here, we investigate this question. We used a custom optical apparatus to measure the eye's focusing response (accommodation) to a range of stimuli with different wavelength compositions. We then developed a biologically informed model of the measured responses. Conventional wisdom holds that accommodation works to maximize visual acuity, but our findings suggest otherwise. Rathe

Model-based comparison of latency estimation methods for the pupillary light reflex.

Accurate estimation of pupillary light reflex (PLR) latency is important in clinical and research settings, yet reported results are often difficult to compare due to differences in hardware, sampling rates, and analysis methods. This study introduces a systematic and reproducible benchmark for evaluating PLR latency estimation algorithms using synthetic data with known ground-truth latency. Synthetic pupillograms were generated using an established dynamic model of the PLR, extended to handle short light impulses. Five commonly used latency estimation methods were evaluated under these condit

Revealing the speed of implied motion signals associated with viewing other people's gaze.

Recent evidence has shown that exposure to static images depicting an agent actively gazing at an object leads to a motion adaptation effect in the direction of the gaze, suggesting that the attention of others is encoded as an implied agent-to-object motion. We examined whether this motion signal is associated with a specific speed by presenting the same static image used in previous studies, followed by test probes with differing speeds of dot motion. A peak significant motion adaptation effect was found for dot motion with a speed of 1.4° s-1. The effect disappeared when the agent was blind

Sneezing in response to naturalistic bright light exposure.

BACKGROUND: The photic sneeze reflex (PSR) is a common but underexplored phenomenon where bright light triggers sneezing, affecting ~30% of the population. This study aimed to characterise the light conditions inducing PSR. METHODS: One male PSR-affected participant logged sneezing events during a 30-day real-world light exposure study. An indoor setup using a multi-primary LED source and an integrating sphere delivered 30-second light stimuli while pupillometric data were collected. RESULTS: A total of 82 sneezing events were recorded, averaging 2.73 sneezes/day (range: 1-6 per event). Illu

Perceptual consequences of retinal stabilization with high-frequency non-stroboscopic displays.

During natural fixation, small eye movements continually modulate the input to the retina. Previous studies have shown that this motion enhances sensitivity to fine spatial detail, a conclusion supported by findings of reduced sensitivity to high-but not low-spatial frequencies when stimuli are immobilized on the retina for brief periods of time. Most prior retinal stabilization studies have relied on fast-phosphor cathode ray tube (CRT) displays or adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopes (AOSLOs), both of which deliver temporally pulsed stimulation. This raises the question of whether

Analysis of human visual experience data.

Exposure to the optical environment-often referred to as visual experience-profoundly influences human physiology and behavior across multiple time scales. In controlled laboratory settings, stimuli can be held constant or manipulated parametrically. However, such exposures rarely replicate real-world conditions, which are inherently complex and dynamic, generating high-dimensional datasets that demand rigorous and flexible analysis strategies. This tutorial presents an analysis pipeline for visual experience datasets, with a focus on reproducible workflows for human chronobiology and myopia r

Perisaccadic and attentional remapping of receptive fields in lateral intraparietal area and frontal eye fields.

The nature and function of perisaccadic receptive field (RF) remapping have been controversial. We use a delayed saccade task to reduce previous confounds and examine the remapping time course in the lateral intraparietal area and frontal eye fields. In the delay period, the RF shift direction turns from the initial fixation to the saccade target. In the perisaccadic period, RFs first shift toward the target (convergent remapping), but around the time of saccade onset/offset, the shifts become predominantly toward the post-saccadic RF locations (forward remapping). Thus, unlike forward remappi

Neural correlates of visual and tactile path integration and their task related modulation.

Self-motion induces sensory signals that allow to determine travel distance (path integration). For veridical path integration, one must distinguish self-generated from externally induced sensory signals. Predictive coding has been suggested to attenuate self-induced sensory responses, while task relevance can reverse the attenuating effect of prediction. But how is self-motion processing affected by prediction and task demands, and do effects generalize across senses? In this fMRI study, we investigated visual and tactile self-motion processing and its modulation by task demands. Visual stimu

Attention to visual motion suppresses neuronal and behavioral sensitivity in nearby feature space.

BACKGROUND: Feature-based attention prioritizes the processing of the attended feature while strongly suppressing the processing of nearby ones. This creates a non-linearity or "attentional suppressive surround" predicted by the Selective Tuning model of visual attention. However, previously reported effects of feature-based attention on neuronal responses are linear, e.g., feature-similarity gain. Here, we investigated this apparent contradiction by neurophysiological and psychophysical approaches. RESULTS: Responses of motion direction-selective neurons in area MT/MST of monkeys were record

Correcting for physical distortions in visual stimuli improves reproducibility in zebrafish neuroscience.

Optical refraction causes light to bend at interfaces between optical media. This phenomenon can significantly distort visual stimuli presented to aquatic animals in water, yet refraction has often been ignored in the design and interpretation of visual neuroscience experiments. Here we provide a computational tool that transforms between projected and received stimuli in order to detect and control these distortions. The tool considers the most commonly encountered interface geometry, and we show that this and other common configurations produce stereotyped distortions. By correcting these di

Visual Stimuli for the Induction of Hunting Behavior in Cuttlefish Sepia pharaonis.

Cuttlefish exhibit typical hunting behavior, including elongating tentacles against specific prey such as prawn and mysid shrimp. Cuttlefish hunting behavior involves three different actions: attention, positioning, and seizure. Hunting behavior is innate and stereotypic behavior, and it is present in newly hatched juveniles. Factors associated with prey are known to induce this behavior, similar to the sign stimulus, whereby young herring chicks imitate pecking behavior against a red dot on their parent's bill. Although the hunting behavior of cuttlefish has been described and used as an indi

Information transmission in the primary visual cortex of retinal degenerated rats.

To study the information transmission in the primary visual cortex (V1) of retinal degenerated (RD) models, wild type (WT) and RD rats were used in the experiments. The neural response in V1 was recorded extracellularly while the flicker with varied intensity levels was given as the visual stimulus. The mutual information (MI) and normalized mutual information (NMI) were determined for every isolated neuron, in order to quantify the amount and efficiency of information transmission in V1 of both control and experimental groups. The results showed that, on one hand, the RD group manifested rela

[Visual vs. quantitative electroencephalographic analysis in patients with and without posttraumatic epilepsy].

INTRODUCTION: We investigated traces of EEG records from two groups of patients with brain trauma: with and without posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE) with respect to the control group by means of two methods: visual and quantitative EEG (QEEG) analysis. The aim of this study was to compare these methods in their sensibility for traumatic and epileptic alterations of the brain tissue in the two experimental conditions: after hyperventilation (HV) and after photo stimulation (FS), and in regard to the basic condition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 36 patients with PTE and 33 without PTE, and the control gro

Release from cross-orientation suppression facilitates 3D shape perception.

Cross-orientation suppression (COS) in striate cortex has been implicated in the efficient encoding of visual stimuli. We show that release from COS facilitates the decoding of 3-D shape. In planar surfaces overlaid with textures, slanting the surface can increase the visibility of the component parallel to the slant. Since this component provides the orientation flows that signify 3-D shape, the enhancement of visibility facilitates 3-D slant perception. Contrast thresholds reveal that this enhancement results from a decrease in COS when 3-D slant creates a frequency mismatch between texture
