Differential effects of photoperiodic history on the responses of gonadotrophins and prolactin to intermediate daylengths in the male Syrian hamster.

The effect of photoperiodic history on the neuroendocrine response to intermediate daylengths (11-13.5 hr of light) was investigated in the male Syrian hamster. The duration of the nocturnal peak of pineal melatonin content was inversely proportional to photoperiod and independent of photoperiodic history. Serum levels of prolactin were lower in animals exposed to shorter photoperiods. Photoperiodic history had little effect on the response of serum prolactin to intermediate daylengths. Serum luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were also lower in shorter photoperiods, but in addition were …

Effects of photoperiod, the pineal gland and the gonads on agonistic behavior in female golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Four studies were conducted to determine the role of photoperiod, the pineal gland and the gonads in the regulation of intrasex agonistic behavior in female hamsters. In the first experiment animals maintained under Long or Short photoperiods were tested in same or opposite photoperiod pairs. Under both testing conditions, Short-day animals tended to exhibit a higher ratio of offensive to defensive behaviors, which was due primarily to a reduced level of defensive behavior in Short-day groups. In the second experiment animals under Long and Short photoperiods were tested following sham surgery…

Relationship of the length of exposure to short photoperiod to the effect of prolactin on pituitary and testicular function in the golden hamster.

Adult male golden hamsters were given ectopic pituitary transplants at the time of transfer from a long (stimulatory) photoperiod (14 h L:10 h D) to a short photoperiod (5L:19D) or at various intervals thereafter. Grafts given at the time of transfer to 5L:19D failed to maintain plasma FSH levels significantly above those observed in sham-operated controls or to prevent regression of the testes. Grafts given after 4 weeks in 5L:19D increased plasma FSH levels and significantly diminished the decrease in testicular volume. Grafts given 14 weeks after transfer to 5L:19D caused a modest increase …

Photoperiodicity and circannual levels of LH, FSH, and testosterone in normal and castrated male, white-tailed deer.

To establish the relation between photoperiodicity and the levels of LH, FSH, and testosterone (T) in plasma, three intact and three castrated adult male white-tailed deer were sampled once a month for 2-3 years. The rang of average LH levels in controls varied between 0.8 and 2.0 ng/mL; the levels in castrates were considerably higher, 3.4 to 8.9 ng/mL. Average levels of FSH varied in controls between 25 and 112 ng/mL and in castrates between 141 and 240 ng/mL. A significant correlation between the seasonal time course of LH and FSH was found in castrated, but not in intact bucks. In castrate…

Photorefractoriness and sexual response in aging partridge kept under constant long- and short-day photoperiods.

The duration of post-juvenile refractoriness was studied in Red-legged partridge kept under a long constant 16-hr photoperiod from hatch to 55 months of age. A second group of partridge was kept under a short constant 8-hr photoperiod from hatch to 38 months of age. Body weight was measured bimonthly, and daily egg production kept on birds reaching sexual maturity. Eighty one percent of all birds were alive at 36 months of age. Birds kept under a constant 16-hr photoperiod were generally heavier at all ages than comparable birds kept under 8-hr photoperiods. Refractoriness was terminated in 38…

Photoperiod manipulation improves growth performance, haematological indices and economic returns of Indian butter catfish, Ompok bimaculatus (Bloch, 1794).

Photoperiod manipulation is emerging as an effective approach for regulating physiological functions in fish. This study aimed to assess the impact of photoperiod on the growth performance, haematological responses, and economic returns of the endangered and highly valued Indian butter catfish, Ompok bimaculatus. Fish with an average body weight of 28.60 ± 4.78 g were randomly placed in six FRP tanks, each measuring 120 × 45 × 60 cm3. Each tank contained 20 fish exposed to a light intensity of 1500 lx under different photoperiods [24:0 light: dark (L: D), 15 L: 9D, 12 L: 12D, 9 L: 15D, 0 L: 24…

Photoperiod-driven concurrent changes in hypothalamic and brainstem transcription of sleep and immune genes in migratory redheaded bunting.

The molecular regulation of sleep in avian migrants is still obscure. We thus investigated this in migratory redheaded buntings, where four life-history states (LHS; i.e. non-migratory, pre-migratory, migratory and refractory states) were induced. There was increased night-time activity (i.e. Zugunruhe) during the migratory state with reduced daytime activity. The recordings of the sleep-wake cycle in buntings showed increased night-time active wakefulness coupled with drastically reduced front and back sleep during migratory phase. Interestingly, we found the buntings to feed and drink even a

Effect of natural photoperiod on epididymal sperm quality and testosterone serum concentration in domestic cat (Felis silvestris catus).

The aim of this study was to assess epididymal sperm characteristics and serum testosterone concentration in cats under natural photoperiod. The hypothesis was that natural photoperiod induces seasonal changes in spermatozoal quality and serum testosterone concentration. Mixed breed tomcats (n = 43) that underwent bilateral orchiectomy at a municipal public pet shelter were used in the study. Epididymides were divided into two groups according to time of castration. In Group I, toms were castrated during increasing light (IL; [winter and spring; n = 24]), and group II, during decreasing light …

Transcription factor dynamics in pineal gland and liver of the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) adapts to prevailing photoperiod.

The anticipation of day length and duration of darkness is necessary and advantageous for animals to survive and requires a photoperiodic memory. In the Syrian hamster this adaptation to photoperiod is mirrored by seasonal changes in the animal's reproductive state and its liver metabolism. Both events are linked to season-dependent alterations of the nocturnally elevated synthesis of the pineal hormone melatonin. To decipher molecules that are involved in this temporal gating, hamsters were exposed to long photoperiod (16 hr light:8 hr darkness; LP), or short photoperiod (8 hr light:16 hr dar…

Phenotypic plasticity of reproductive traits in response to food availability and photoperiod in white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus).

Although most temperate-zone mammals are seasonal breeders, many populations display variation in winter reproductive phenotype. For most mammals, the primary environmental cues regulating reproductive status are food availability and photoperiod, and these two factors can interact in their effect. Low food availability is primarily thought to suppress reproduction by reducing body mass and thereby forcing energy allocations to survival alone. However, because most small mammals rely on an increase in food intake rather than stored nutrients for reproduction, we hypothesized that food availabi…

Insulin-like growth factor-1 in Syrian hamsters: interactions of photoperiod, gonadal steroids, pinealectomy, and continuous melatonin treatment.

Four experiments in Syrian hamsters examined the role and possible interaction of photoperiod, gonadal steroids, and the pineal on circulating levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). In the first experiment, female hamsters were exposed to long photoperiod (LP; 14:10 LD) or short photoperiod (SP; 8:16 LD); an additional group of SP-exposed females was pinealectomized (PX). SP induced a significant depression in IGF-1 concentrations which PX partially prevented. In Experiment 2, two groups (control and castrate [CX]) of adult male hamsters were kept in LP, and three groups (intact, CX, …

Effects of age and sex on photoperiod modulation of nucleus accumbens monoamine content and release in adolescence and adulthood.

Day length, or photoperiod, is a reliable environmental cue encoded by the brain's circadian clock that indicates changing seasons and induces seasonal biological processes. In humans, photoperiod, age, and sex have been linked to seasonality in neuropsychiatric disorders, as seen in Seasonal Affective Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, and Bipolar Disorder. The nucleus accumbens is a key locus for the regulation of motivated behaviors and neuropsychiatric disorders. Using periadolescent and young adult male and female mice, here we assessed photoperiod's effect on serotonin and dopamine tis…

Screening of Differentially Expressed Genes and miRNAs in Hypothalamus and Pituitary Gland of Sheep under Different Photoperiods.

The reproduction of sheep is affected by many factors such as light, nutrition and genetics. The Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is an important pathway for sheep reproduction, and changes in HPG axis-related gene expression can affect sheep reproduction. In this study, a model of bilateral ovarian removal and estrogen supplementation (OVX + E2) was applied to screen differentially expressed genes and miRNAs under different photoperiods using whole transcriptome sequencing and reveal the regulatory effects of the photoperiod on the upstream tissues of the HPG axis in sheep. Whole tra…

Short photoperiod reduces the temperature sensitivity of leaf-out in saplings of Fagus sylvatica but not in horse chestnut.

Leaf phenology is one of the most reliable bioindicators of ongoing global warming in temperate and boreal zones because it is highly sensitive to temperature variation. A large number of studies have reported advanced spring leaf-out due to global warming, yet the temperature sensitivity of leaf-out has significantly decreased in temperate deciduous tree species over the past three decades. One of the possible mechanisms is that photoperiod is limiting further advance to protect the leaves against potential damaging frosts. However, the "photoperiod limitation" hypothesis remains poorly inves…

The photoperiod, circadian regulation and chronodisruption: the requisite interplay between the suprachiasmatic nuclei and the pineal and gut melatonin.

The current scientific literature is replete with investigations providing information on the molecular mechanisms governing the regulation … ark cycle is a primary input to the central circadian clock, it is obvious that disturbances in the photoperiodic environment, e.g., light exposure at night, would cause disruption in the function of the SCN which would then pass this inappropriate information to cells in the periphery. One circadian rhythm that transfers time of day information to the organi …

Photoperiodism as a modifier of effect of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field on morphological properties of pineal gland.

The aim of our study was to determine, using histological and stereological methods, whether photoperiodism has any impact on the effects that chronic (three-month long) exposure to LF-EMF (50Hz) has on morphological characteristics on rat's pineal gland. The experiment was performed on 48 Mill Hill male rats (24 experimental and 24 control). Upon birth, 24 rats were exposed for 7h a day, 5 days a week for 3 months to LF-EMF (50 Hz, 50-500microT, 10V/m). In the winter (short days, long nights), the activity of the pineal gland and neuroendocrine sensitivity is increased. The study was performe…
