Seasonal variations in a population of an amblyceran louse, Menacanthus eurysternus, infesting the common myna have been studied. Incidence of infestation, lice, index, and population structure of this species have been recorded in different months of the year; reasons for the population fluctuations are discussed.

Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae), the human head louse, is a parasitic insect responsible for pediculosis, a global health concern. In a previous study, we demonstrated that this hematophagous insect is attracted to a solvent extract from its faeces. In this study, we evaluated the head louse attraction towards mixtures of the three main components present in faeces (uric acid, hypoxanthine and guanine). A basic uric acid:hypoxanthine:guanine (10:10:1) mixture in 0.2 M produced significant attraction towards head lice in behavioural bioassays. In another approach, …

There is limited information about the natural history of the transmission of feather lice (Phthiraptera) from parent birds to their young. This article therefore examines the transmission of 4 species of feather lice from parent blackbirds to their nestlings in an English population, and addresses questions formulated from the perspective of the lice. The lice that disperse onto the several young in the nest were mostly found on the larger chicks, those with higher survival prospects. The lice dispersing to chicks were overwhelmingly nymphs, which cannot be sexed morphologically, and so the p…

Infestation with the head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae), is one of the most common parasitic infestation of humans worldwide. Traditionally, the main treatment for control of head lice is chemical control that is based in a wide variety of neurotoxic synthetic insecticides. The repeated overuse of these products has resulted in the selection of resistant populations of head lice. Thus, plant-derived insecticides, such as the essential oils seem to be good viable alternatives as some have low toxicity to mammals and are biodegradable. We determined the ins…

In Argentina, field populations of the head louse Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) have developed resistance to permethrin and other pyrethroids. Thus, the aim of this work was the development of a lotion containing essential oils from plants and an alcoholic coadjuvant to improve biological effect. Ethanol + isopropanol (1 + 1 in volume) 50% in water and ethanol 96% were taken as bases for preparation of experimental lotions containing essential oils from plants. We found that experimental lotions containing lavender, peppermint and eucalyptus oils in a 5% composi…

Little is known about glandular proteins secreted from the skin- and blood-feeding ectoparasite salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis). The labial gland has ducts extending into the oral cavity of the lice, and the present study aimed to identify novel genes expressed by this gland type and to investigate their role in modulation of host parameters at the lice feeding site. Five genes associated with labial gland function were identified and named Lepeophteirus salmonis labial gland protein (LsLGP) 1-4 and 1 like (LsLGP1L). All LsLGPs were predicted to be small charged secreted proteins not en

In contrast to 15 or more validated and/or proposed tick-borne spotted fever group species, only three named medically important rickettsial species are associated with insects. These insect-borne rickettsiae are comprised of two highly pathogenic species, Rickettsia prowazekii (the agent of epidemic typhus) and R. typhi (the agent of murine typhus), as well as R. felis, a species with unconfirmed pathogenicity. Rickettsial association with obligate hematophagous insects such as the human body louse (R. prowazekii transmitted by Pediculus h. humanus) and several flea species (R. typhi and R. f

Two white pelicans at the garden of a restaurant in Beyşehir, a county of Konya province were examined for the presence of ectoparasites. Nine lice were collected from the oral cavity of one of them. They were identified as Piagetiella titan. Diffuse erosions, erosive ulcers covered by dried yellowish-brown exudate and petechial haemorrhages were observed in oral mucosa.

Three species of chewing lice, 11 species of sucking lice, and 28 species of fleas are recorded from mammals in Missouri. Of these, seven species of sucking lice (Hoplopleura acanthopus, Hoplopleura hesperomydis, Hoplopleura sciuricola, Neohaematopinus sciuri, Neohaematopinus sciurinus, Neohaematopinus sciuropteri, and Solenopotes ferrisi) and one species of flea (Doratopsylla blarinae) represent new state records. From 1993 to 1995, 773 individual mammals were examined for ectoparasites in southeastern Missouri. One species of chewing louse, 6 species of sucking lice, and 11 species of fleas

A variety of non-conventional treatments was applied to biting louse (Bovicola ovis) infested sheep in order to evaluate ways in which farmers could control the louse infestations and still maintain Organic Production Standards. In one trial, louse scores of sheep shorn but kept dry or wetted by water alone or with water plus detergent were compared with unshorn sheep treated similarly. Shearing alone accounted for a 35.7-66.3% reduction in mean louse scores. Wetting alone either with water or with water and added detergent accounted for a 26.9-35.3% reduction in mean louse scores. The combine
