Tuberous sclerosis (TS) is a multisystem disorder characterized by hamartomas in various organs. It usually manifests itself during infancy or childhood with neurological features, including mental retardation and seizures. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed patients imaged with the DREAM swept-source OCT system (Intalight, San Jose, CA), capable of deep choroidal penetration. The recent crash of an airliner in the French Alps drew attention to the critical importance of the mental health of pilots and the key role physicians play in determining whether a pilot is fit to fly. This article reviews Federal Aviation Administration regulations and guidelines for making that determination and discusses the role of both the aviation medical examiner and the community physician in caring for pilots. It also offers community physicians tips for building solid relationships with pilot-patients so as to ensure they receive the best care possible.

From 1990 to 1992 the allergy profile of 1042 prospective hairdressers (personal and family history, atopic skin, serum IgE, patch and prick tests) was determined and their occupational suitability was evaluated. To help resolve debate as to the relative efficacy of two different insulin delivery media, we set out to examine differences between Haemaccel and Normal Saline with reference to our hospital's current infusion procedures. After analysing the data, we found that there was a statistically significant difference between Haemaccel and Normal Saline and that, for solutions containing one unit of soluble insulin per ten mls of carrier solution, Haemaccel was the carrier of choice and clearly indicated as the preferable medium in acute diabetic situations like DKA and HHNKC.

Twenty-four patients with gastric ulcer and 18 with duodenal ulcer diagnosed by endoscopy were treated with ranitidine, 300 mg day-1, for 8 consecutive weeks, or until the ulcer was found endoscopically healed. Of the 24 with gastric ulcer, 50% were healed within 4 weeks, and 83% within 8 weeks. Of 18 cases with duodenal ulcer, 50% were healed within 2 weeks and 94% within 4 weeks.
