Using natural variation to understand plant responses to iron availability.

Iron bioavailability varies dramatically between soil types across the globe. This has given rise to high levels of natural variation in plant iron responses, allowing members of even a single species to thrive across a wide range of soil types. In recent years we have seen the use of genome-wide association analysis to identify natural variants underlying plant responses to changes in iron availability in both Arabidopsis and important crop species. These studies have provided insights into which genes have been important in shaping local adaptation to iron availability in different plant spe

The influence of acute water stresses on the biochemical composition of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) berries.

BACKGROUND: Crops are exposed to recurrent and acute drought stress episodes during their vegetative and reproductive cycles, and these episodes are increasingly frequent due to ongoing climate change. Sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum), alias bell pepper, is one of the most widely cultivated vegetables and is grown in open fields worldwide. Here we assessed the effect of acute water stress, applied to a breeding line of sweet pepper at three stages of plant development: five true-leaves (Stage 1), production of the third flower (Stage 2) and setting of the first fruit (Stage 3), on the production

We might have got it wrong: Modern wheat is not more toxic for celiac patients.

If there is a disease in which many myths are part of the daily lives of both patients and clinicians as well as researchers, this must be celiac disease. Here, we discuss the possibility that modern wheat varieties used by man do not have led to the increased prevalence of celiac disease.

Food processing and breeding strategies for coeliac-safe and healthy wheat products.

A strict gluten-free diet is currently the only treatment for the 1-2% of the world population who suffer from coeliac disease (CD). However, due to the presence of wheat and wheat derivatives in many food products, avoiding gluten consumption is difficult. Gluten-free products, made without wheat, barley or rye, typically require the inclusion of numerous additives, resulting in products that are often less healthy than gluten-based equivalents. Here, we present and discuss two broad approaches to decrease wheat gluten immunogenicity for CD patients. The first approach is based on food proces

Plant photosynthetic responses to drought, rewatering, and flooding.

The review discusses how plants modulate photosynthesis under contrasting water regimes, highlighting stress-specific limitations, recovery dynamics, and physiological indicators to inform breeding and management under climate change. Climate change is intensifying rainfall extremes, including prolonged droughts, sudden rewatering, and extended flooding, threatening crop productivity worldwide. Here, we present an integrative review synthesizing how major crops modulate photosynthesis under these contrasting water regimes. Drought restricts stomatal and mesophyll conductance, downregulates RuB

Single transcription factor SlYABBY5b synchronizes gibberellin-mediated stature and basal immunity in tomato.

Optimizing plant architecture without compromising disease resistance is a fundamental challenge in crop breeding, particularly for space-efficient systems such as vertical farming. Here, we identify the YABBY-family transcription factor SlYABBY5b as a pivotal regulator that synchronizes these traits in tomato. Through a genome-wide association study, we establish SlYABBY5b as a major locus governing natural variation in plant height. Functional analyses reveal that SlYABBY5b directly orchestrates gibberellin (GA) metabolism by activating the inactivation gene SlGA2ox2 and repressing the biosy

Concurrent enhancement of provitamin A and yield in tropical maize hybrids.

Maize is a strategic food crop in sub-Saharan Africa, where vitamin A deficiency affects millions. Significant investments have thus focused on developing maize varieties that provide 50% of the daily vitamin A requirement for vulnerable populations. Despite the release of many provitamin A enriched maize varieties across Africa, estimates of genetic gains in provitamin A content and grain yield from long-term breeding programs are undocumented. This study analyzed data from 124 provitamin A-enriched hybrids and eight commercial checks recorded over 12 years across diverse environments to esti

Genetic diversity and population structure of wheat in India and Turkey.

Genetic diversity among plant species offers prospects for improving the plant characteristics. Its assessment is necessary to help tackle the threats of environmental fluctuations and for the effective exploitation of genetic resources in breeding programmes. Although wheat is one of the most thoroughly studied crops in terms of genetic polymorphism studies, phylogenetic affinities of Indian and Turkish Triticum species have not been assessed to date. In this study, genetic association of 95 tetraploid and hexaploid wheat genotypes originating from India and Turkey was determined for the firs

Dose-dependent effects of gamma irradiation on growth and reproductive traits of strawberry.

BACKGROUND: Radiosensitivity tests must be performed to determine the ideal doses before using gamma irradiation. This study investigated the effects of varying doses of gamma radiation (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 Gy) on the growth and reproductive development of strawberry plants. RESULTS: Gamma irradiation exhibited a clear dose-dependent response in strawberry plants, with 30 Gy producing the most favorable responses for several vegetative and reproductive traits. At 30 Gy, plants showed the highest leaf area, flower number (16.66 flowers plant⁻¹), root length (20.66 cm

Fine-mapping and candidate gene analysis of qFF3.1 conferring fruit firmness in a modern tomato variety.

Tomato fruit firmness is a critical determinant of postharvest quality, dictating storage, ultimate shelf life, and market value. While previous research on tomato fruit firmness has largely confined to wild or heirloom accessions, the genetic basis underlying this trait in modern elite breeding lines remains largely unexplored. In this study, we dissect the genetic architecture of fruit firmness using a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from a cross between the modern inbred line CF-1 and the conventional cultivar Moneymaker. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping revealed thre

Analyzing the regulatory role of heat shock transcription factors in plant heat stress tolerance: a brief appraisal.

An increase in ambient temperature throughout the twenty-first century has been described as a "worldwide threat" for crop production. Due to their sessile lifestyles, plants have evolved highly sophisticated and complex heat stress response (HSR) mechanisms to respond to higher temperatures. The HSR allows plants to minimize the damages caused by heat stress (HS), thus enabling cellular protection. HSR is crucial for their lifecycle and yield, particularly for plants grown in the field. At the cellular level, HSR involves the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs) and other stress-responsiv

Genetic Architecture of domestication- and improvement-related traits using a population derived from Sorghum virgatum and Sorghum bicolor.

The genetic basis of domestication and improvement remains largely unknown in sorghum as a typical multiple-origins species. In this study, the F2 and F3 populations derived from a cross between Sorghum virgatum and domesticated sorghum were used to study the genetic architecture of domestication- and improvement-related traits. We found that human selection had greatly reshaped sorghum through the Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) with large genetic effects in the traits of harvest, plant architecture and grain taste including the reduction of shattering, few branches, short plant stature and th

Candidate genes identification for internode length in rice via genome-wide association studies.

Through GWAS and CRISPR/Cas9, it was found that INL1 and INL2 act as candidate genes regulating rice internodes and may affect the GA pathway. Their favorable haplotypes provide valuable gene targets for dwarf breeding. The number and length of each internode of rice are the determining factors of plant height, and are important traits for lodging resistance and yield formation. Mining the genes related to the number and length of internodes is of great significance for cultivating dwarf or semi-dwarf varieties. In order to explore the genetic basis of the number and length of internodes, the

Transcriptomic approach to uncover dynamic events in the development of mid-season sunburn in apple fruit.

Apples grown in high heat, high light, and low humidity environments are at risk for sun injury disorders like sunburn and associated crop losses. Understanding the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying sunburn will support improvement of mitigation strategies and breeding for more resilient varieties. Numerous studies have highlighted key biochemical processes involved in sun injury, such as the phenylpropanoid and reactive oxygen species (ROS) pathways, demonstrating both enzyme activities and expression of related genes in response to sunburn conditions. Most previous studies ha

A family of methyl esterases converts methyl salicylate to salicylic acid in ripening tomato fruit.

Methyl salicylate imparts a potent flavor and aroma described as medicinal and wintergreen that is undesirable in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) fruit. Plants control the quantities of methyl salicylate through a variety of biosynthetic pathways, including the methylation of salicylic acid to form methyl salicylate and subsequent glycosylation to prevent methyl salicylate emission. Here, we identified a subclade of tomato methyl esterases, SALICYLIC ACID METHYL ESTERASE1-4, responsible for demethylation of methyl salicylate to form salicylic acid in fruits. This family was identified by proximi
