Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using a modified literature method involving aqueous AgNO3 (3 mM) and plant extract (LCE) at a constant ratio, under alkaline conditions and controlled temperature. The nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential analysis and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The UV-Vis spectra displayed a broad absorption band around 450 nm, indicative of polydispersity, while DLS revealed a hydrodynamic diameter of 90.3 nm with a polydispersity index of 0.3366. Zeta potential values sugge

Biomass derived carbon is a promising class of sustainable porous materials for hydrogen storage. The natural vascular structure of plant biomass can potentially facilitate uptake and even dispersion of metal ions from aqueous solution, enabling activation during carbonisation. To test this hypothesis, we studied a one-step pre-activation approach for synthesis of microporous carbon using copper(ii) ions and kale plant stems as a model vascular biomass precursor. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows systemic changes in the mass loss profiles and increased residual inorganic content with high

The management of spent pickling acids (SPA) is an environmental challenge for the hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) industry. Bearing in mind its elevated content of iron and zinc, SPA can be regarded as a source of secondary materials in a circular economy approach. This work reports the pilot scale demonstration of non-dispersive solvent extraction (NDSX) in hollow fiber membrane contactors (HFMCs) to perform the selective zinc separation and SPA purification, so that the characteristics needed for use as a source of iron chloride are achieved. The operation of the NDSX pilot plant, which incorpora

Agricultural output needs significant increases to feed the growing population. Fertilizers are essential for plant production systems, with nitrogen (N) being the most limiting nutrient for plant growth. It is commonly supplied to crops as urea. Still, due to volatilization, up to 50 % of the total N application is lost. Slow or controlled release fertilizers are being developed to reduce these losses. The co-application of zinc (Zn) as a micronutrient can increase N absorption. Thus, we hypothesize that the controlled delivery of both nutrients (N and Zn) in an integrated system can improve

This work examined the capability of Imperata cylindrica to respond, tolerate and accumulate Cu when growing at high Cu concentration (300 mg kg-1 of substrate) at different times of exposure (2, 14 and 21 days). The Cu accumulation in plants was examined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and Cu localized by Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy. Additionally, the phenolic compound identifications and concentrations were determined using liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Our results showed that root biomass decreased significantly at high Cu

Tomato spotted wilt is an important viral constraint on tobacco production, but the direction and magnitude of future climate effects remain uncertain. This systematized narrative review evaluates evidence linking climate drivers with cultivated tobacco physiology, tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), thrips-vector ecology, weed reservoirs, surveillance, and management. Direct multifactorial experiments that simultaneously manipulate climate, TSWV, tobacco, and vector species are scarce; therefore, the synthesis explicitly separates direct tobacco evidence from evidence derived from other TSWV ho

The origin of seed plants transformed land plant reproduction by protecting the embryo and enabling dispersal across diverse ecosystems. Yet many reproductive mechanisms remain poorly resolved, as research has focused predominantly on angiosperm models. Because phylogenomic analyses recover Ginkgoales and Cycadales as a clade sister to the remaining living gymnosperms, Ginkgo biloba provides an informative system for investigating reproductive traits in early-diverging spermatophytes. Here, we integrated phenology, histology, RNA-seq, arabinogalactan-protein candidate profiling, and JIM8 immun

INTRODUCTION: Environmental filtering is a core mechanism driving plant functional trait reassembly and community succession. However, it is often treated as a uniform process, and whether distinct abiotic factors act through divergent mechanisms remains poorly understood.
METHODS: We quantified reproductive traits (fruit types and seed dispersal modes), environmental gradients, and community attributes across plots in a typical resource-limited ecosystem characterized by intensified environmental filtering. Using an integrated framework that combined correlation screening, mediation analysis

A sustainable method has been developed to produce multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) that are adorned with a unique silver nanoparticle, using a plant extract (Origanum dubium) as a mediator. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) technique was used to investigate the chemical components of the plant extract. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been deposited on the MWCNTs as well as acid-functionalized MWCNTs (f-MWCNTs) via an in situ solution method. The present study presents a sustainable and economical approach to the synthesis of AgNPs. The biosynthesis of Ag nanoparticles has b

Cd and As are difficult to co-remediate in co-contaminated soils. In this study, remediation materials comprising large-grained and nano-sized biochar (BC), ferrihydrite (FH), and complexes thereof were added to Cd- and As-contaminated soil. The uptake of Cd and As by pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.) was then evaluated using a pot experiment and the Cd and As concentrations of the soil pore water and leaching water were measured. The Cd and As concentrations of the pore and leaching water were slightly increased with the addition of BC, and decreased with addition of FH and the biochar-ferrihy

Urban airborne particulate is a complex mixture of air pollutants, many of which have not been identified. However, short-term mutagenesis tests together with chemicophysical parameter analysis are able to better assess air quality and genotoxic load. The findings of continuous monitoring (January 1991-August 1998) of urban air genotoxicity of a Po Valley town (Italy) on Salmonella typhimurium and Saccharomyces cerevisiae are reported. During this period, various measures (catalytic devices, unleaded fuels, annual vehicle overhaul, etc.) to improve air-dispersed pollutant control were enforced

BACKGROUND: The WRKY transcription factor family, characterized by its conserved WRKYGQK motif and zinc finger structure, serves as a central regulatory module in plants, mediating developmental, stress-responsive, and metabolic processes through W-box binding. In Camellia sinensis, WRKY genes act as molecular integrators that link environmental cues to the biosynthesis of quality-related compounds, underscoring the importance of understanding their evolutionary patterns for genetic improvement. However, previous research has been limited by single-reference genome approaches, which fail to ca

This study employs a correlative microscopy approach to investigate the uptake, translocation, and phytoaccumulation of widely distributed citric acid-stabilized iron oxide colloidal particles in red radish ( Raphanus sativus ) sprouts. By integrating light and electron microscopy, this method provides a comprehensive, time-resolved analysis of nanoparticles accumulation within plant roots and their biosorption within a dynamically formed biofilm surrounding the root surface. Red radish sprouts were selected as an ideal model due to their rapid germination, well-developed fibrous root system,

Domesticated grain crops evolved from wild plants under human cultivation, losing natural dispersal mechanisms to become dependent upon humans, and showing changes in a suite of other traits, including increasing seed size. There is tendency for seed enlargement during domestication to be viewed as the result of deliberate selection for large seeds by early farmers. However, like some other domestication traits, large seeds may have evolved through natural selection from the activities of people as they gathered plants from the wild, or brought them into cultivation in anthropogenic settings.

UNLABELLED: Most arthropod-borne viruses produce intermittent epidemics in infected plants. However, the underlying mechanisms of these epidemics are unclear. Here, we demonstrated that rice stripe mosaic virus (RSMV), a viral pathogen, significantly increases the mortality of its overwintering vector, the leafhopper species Recilia dorsalis. Cold-stress assays indicated that RSMV reduces the cold tolerance of leafhoppers, a process associated with the downregulation of leafhopper cuticular protein genes. An RSMV-derived small RNA (vsiR-t00355379) was found to facilitate the downregulation of

A rapid and efficient method based on two-step dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) was developed for the simultaneous determination of antibiotics belonging to six different subclasses (fluoroquinolones, macrolides, sulfonamides, lincosamides, nitroimidazoles and trimethoprim) in influent wastewater samples. Analysis was performed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). During method optimization, several parameters affecting DLLME performance were evaluated: the type and volume of extraction and dispersive solvents, sample

Fruits are unique to flowering plants and confer a selective advantage as they facilitate seed maturation and dispersal. In fleshy fruits, development and ripening are associated with numerous structural, biochemical, and physiological changes, including modifications in the general appearance, texture, flavor, and aroma, which ultimately convert the immature fruit into a considerably more attractive and palatable structure for seed dispersal by animals. Treatment with exogenous nitric oxide (NO) delays fruit ripening, prevents chilling damage, promotes disease resistance, and enhances the nut

Flow injection (FI) in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) is advantageous for the analysis of volume-limited samples and is invaluable for the analysis of corrosive samples that would prematurely degrade ICPMS components. However, the dispersion process with 50-μL injections in FI degrades ICPMS sensitivity. Monosegmented flow analysis (MSFA), where the sample plug is in the middle of 1 mL of air, eliminates dispersion while preserving the rinsing effect of the carrier. More reproducible as well as sharper, narrower, and more symmetrical peaks result with MSF

Cylindrocladium buxicola (syn. C. pseudonaviculatum; teleomorph Calonectria pseudonaviculata) is an important fungal pathogen of Buxus spp. Although widespread in Western Europe, this pathogen has only recently been introduced into North America, where it represents a significant threat to the U.S. and Canadian boxwood industries. Trade of latently infected nursery stock is an important mode of long-distance dissemination and introduction of this pathogen but no methods for detection of latently infected material are available. Also, the pathways for short-distance dispersal of C. buxicola hav
