Galactose-free immunoglobulin G (IgG), which is known to be higher in the sera of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, was prepared from IgG of healthy volunteers using enzymes. A lectin histochemistry study was performed in the supraglottic and subglottic regions of 10 hamsters. The submucosal glands were observed by light microscopy. The supraglottic submucosal glands presented numerous mucous tubules but on the other hand, the subglottic submucosal glands had serous tubules which finished at the distal portion in serous acini. The results suggest that the distribution of fucosylated-mucin and serum-type glycoproteins between the supra- and subglottic submucosal glands suggest a different viscosity and function of the mucus.

Forty-five cases of cardiac angiosarcomas were reviewed, and the data were compared with those of a 1968 review of 41 other cases which revealed these tumors to be typically located within the right atrium as large symptomatic masses and to be rapidly fatal, with the diagnoses usually determined only at autopsy. A new and versatile method for linking biologically active ligands to a polyacrylamide matrix is reported. Active esters of acrylic acid (N-succinimicyl acrylate and N-phthalimidyl acrylate) were synthesized, then copolymerized with acrylamide and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide. We have developed a novel method for quantitation of lectin binding sites in mucins derived from colon tissues. Binding of peanut agglutinin and wheat germ agglutinin was measured in extracts from normal and malignant human colon epithelium. Binding of wheat germ agglutinin was used as an estimate of the total mucin present in the tissue extract.
