Molecular insights into physiological impact of micro- and nano-plastics on the digestive system and gut-brain axis.

Microplastics (MPs) and Nanoplastics (NPs) represent an alarming and persistent threat to global human health, owing to their resilience and ubiquity in the environment. Ingestion via contaminated food and water is the primary exposure route, resulting in the accumulation of MNPs in key organs such as the gastrointestinal tract (GI), liver, and pancreas, highlighting the urgent need to understand their potential cumulative and systemic effects. This review critically evaluates recent molecular-level insights into the physiological impacts of MNPs, with particular emphasis on the GI system and

Biodegradation of plastics and pesticides by soil bacteria in Bangladesh: Insights into antibiotic resistance and potential therapeutic targets.

Soil bacteria exhibit varying degrees of tolerance to different concentrations of pesticides and plastics, and some possess the ability to degrade them, which is crucial for bioremediation. However, the multidrug-resistant properties of these bacteria pose challenges for their potential applications. Hence, this study aims to separate and characterize plastics and pesticide-degrading bacteria fromnon-contaminated and contaminated sites in Bangladesh and evaluate their antibiotic-resistant patterns to identify safety issues and discover promising therapeutic targets for combating multidrug-resi

Characterization of Inorganic Additives in and Photochemically Liberated from Consumer Plastics: Implications for Global and Local Biogeochemical Cycles.

The composition and environmental impacts of inorganic additives in consumer plastics have received little attention within the plastic pollution discipline relative to organic additives. In this work, X-ray florescence spectroscopy, loss-on-ignition, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry were used to qualitatively and quantitatively characterize inorganic additives from up to 80 consumer plastic items. On average, consumer plastic goods contained ∼8% inorganic additives by mass. Concentrations of each element often varied by orders of magnitude. The most common elements detected we

Plastics aplenty in paddy lands: incidence of microplastics in Indian rice fields and ecotoxicity on paddy field phytoplankton.

Occurrence of microplastics (MP) in natural paddy fields and its impact are less studied. This study reports the abundance of MP in two paddy fields of Kerala, India, cultivating rice crops, 'Pokkali' and 'Uma' crops, which are vital to Kerala's food security and climate resilience. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses confirmed the presence of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) fragments as major MP in the surface water of paddy fields during vegetative (transplantation) and ripening (near harvesting) phases. MP density in the vegetative phase of 'Pokkali' (1370 ± 468

A new insight of size-dependent plastics particles kinetics with regarding of metabolomics effects in liver and kidney.

Plastic pollution has received widespread attention. The current techniques for the extraction and detection of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) from biological samples were limited and the biodistribution of MNPs remains unclear. In the study, we aimed to develop a comprehensive extraction protocol with the quartz filter membrane filtration and flocculation precipitation for covering both micro- and nanoscale polystyrene (PS), and to combine the spectral qualification (Raman and Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI)) and Py-GC/QTOF detection for assessing the plastics' size dependent distribution and acc

Interfacial Interactions between Nanoplastics and Biological Systems: toward an Atomic and Molecular Understanding of Plastics-Driven Biological Dyshomeostasis.

Micro- and nano-plastics (NPs) are found in human milk, blood, tissues, and organs and associate with aberrant health outcomes including inflammation, genotoxicity, developmental disorders, onset of chronic diseases, and autoimmune disorders. Yet, interfacial interactions between plastics and biomolecular systems remain underexplored. Here, we have examined experimentally, in vitro, in vivo, and by computation, the impact of polystyrene (PS) NPs on a host of biomolecular systems and assemblies. Our results reveal that PS NPs essentially abolished the helix-content of the milk protein β-lactogl

Micro-and nano-plastics induce kidney damage and suppression of innate immune function in zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae.

Aquatic environments serve as critical repositories for pollutants and have significantly accumulated micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) due to the extensive production and application of plastic products. While the disease resistance and immunity of fish are closely linked to the condition of their aquatic habitats, the specific effects of nanoplastics (NPs) and microplastics (MPs) within these environments on fish immune functions are still not fully understood. The present study utilized zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos and larvae as model organisms to examine the impacts of polystyrene NPs (100

Response of moulting genes and gut microbiome to nano-plastics and copper in juvenile horseshoe crab Tachypleus tridentatus.

Nanoplastics (NPs) and heavy metals are typical marine pollutants, affecting the gut microbiota composition and molting rate of marine organisms. Currently, there is a lack of research on the toxicological effects of combined exposure to horseshoe crabs. In this study, we investigated the effects of NPs and copper on the expression of molt-related genes and gut microbiome in juvenile tri-spine horseshoe crabs Tachypleus tridentatus by exposing them to NPs (100 nm, 104 particles L-1) and/or Cu2+ (10 μgL-1) in seawater for 21 days. Compared with the control group, the relative mRNA expression of

Preparation of Plastics- and Foaming Agent-Free and Porous Bamboo Charcoal based Composites Using Sodium Silicate as Adhesives.

Plastics and foaming agents are often used to prepare large-size and low-density bamboo charcoal (BC) based composites. In this study, a plastic-free and foaming agent-free BC based composite was prepared by substituting sodium silicate (SS) for plastics. The effect of both the BC particle sizes and the usage amount of SS on the mechanical and adsorptive properties of the BC/SS composites were investigated. The experimental results show that when the BC particle size is 270 μm and the mass ratio of BC to SS is equal to 10:5, the BC/SS composite has the optimal foaming effect and best comprehen

Micro- and nano-plastics in edible fruit and vegetables. The first diet risks assessment for the general population.

Microplastics (MPs) represent a current public health concern since toxicity has not yet fully investigated. They were found in several foods, but to the best of our knowledge, at this time no data was reported for the edible vegetables and fruits. We focused on diet exposure aiming to evaluate the number and the size (<10 μm) of MPs in the most commonly consumed vegetables and fruits, in relation to their recommended daily intake too. MPs extraction and analysis were carried out using an innovative Italian methodology and SEM-EDX, respectively. Finally, we calculated the Estimated Daily Intak

L-form plastics in the treatment of post-burn trophic ulcers and cicatrices of the foot calcaneal area.

The burn trauma of the posterior surface of calcaneus region and ankle joint followed by cicatrix formation in the Achilles tendon zone is often complicated by unhealing trophic ulcers. Eleven patients (seven men and four women, aged 9-54 years) have been operated on under our observation for prolonged unhealing ulcers and cicatrices located in the Achilles tendon zone. After cicatrices dissection, L-form plastic surgery was performed. The postoperative period was smooth; a skin graft was appropriately fixed to the proper tissues and the wound margins. Good results were achieved in 10 cases, a

Electrospun Co3O4/CeO2 hollow nanotubes for photocatalytic degradation of PET plastics with peroxymonosulfate activation: Performance and DFT insight.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics cause significant environmental harm. Traditional treatment methods, such as landfilling and incineration, can cause secondary pollution. Here, an efficient synergistic photocatalytic system is presented, based on Co3O4/CeO2 hollow nanotubes prepared by electrospinning, to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and promote the degradation of PET plastics. The results show that the as-prepared Co3O4/CeO2 composite catalyst exhibits the best performance under illumination; the weight loss rate of PET can reach ∼82.7 ± 4.5% in the presence of a 3 mM PMS solutio

Photoinduced weathering of plastics and implications for spectral inclusion into matching database for laser direct infrared spectroscopy identification.

Microplastics are a ubiquitous environmental contaminant that can be found virtually every habitat and water source around the world. Therefore, there is great interest in developing efficient and reliable methodologies for the identification and enumeration of microplastics from environmental media. Laser direct infrared spectroscopy (LDIR) utilizes the fingerprint region of infrared (IR) spectra to make identification of plastics and other materials during analysis. However, only pristine spectra of plastics are currently used in the identification process. It has been well documented that t

Surface bio-erosion and structural alteration of colored and agricultural plastics induced by Scenedesmus dimorphus and Chlorella vulgaris.

Plastic pollution remains a major environmental challenge because synthetic polymers and their additives can resist biological degradation. This study investigated the early stage surface modification of commercially formulated plastics following exposure to the freshwater microalgae Scenedesmus dimorphus and Chlorella vulgaris. Transparent and pigmented polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and agricultural low density polyethylene (LDPE) films were incubated with microalgal cultures for 100 days under controlled laboratory conditions. Changes in plastic mass and surface properties were ev

A generalizable time-gated Raman spectroscopy-machine learning workflow for accurate identification of challenging plastics in electronic waste.

Electronic waste (E-waste), the fastest-growing solid waste stream, is projected to reach 82 million metric tons globally by 2030. E-waste plastics are difficult to sort due to diverse polymer compositions and the widespread use of pigments and other additives, which introduce complexity and/or strong fluorescence interference for spectroscopic based methods, especially for Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy coupled with machine learning (ML) has been explored for plastic identification, but its performance and applicability remain limited by the strong fluorescent backgrounds and reliance

Direct polymer-to-polymer upcycling of mixed PET/PBT wastes into biodegradable plastics: an environmental techno-economic assessment.

Upcycling of post-consumer poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) typically relies on depolymerization. However, depolymerization can be energy-intensive and operationally complex, undermining the benefits of upcycling. In this study, we designed a direct polymer-to-polymer copolymerization process that converts mixed PET/PBT waste into biodegradable copolyesters. We evaluated the effects of poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG) loading (20-40 wt%) and the inclusion of a glass fiber removal step on process performance. To this end, we conducted an environmental

A comprehensive review on microbial degradation of polyethylene plastics: ecotoxicity, deterioration process, recurrent intermediates and key enzymes involved.

Plastic contamination is a universal threat that affects the flora and fauna in the environment. This review focuses on biodegradation of polyethylene (PE). PE is a widely used plastic in food packaging, agricultural materials (mulch films) and disposable single-use plastic bags owing to its durability and cost-effectiveness. Being a hydrophobic, recalcitrant and persistent polymer, PE contaminates air, soil and water. The ecotoxicity, sources, fate and transport of PE and detection techniques like micro-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (micro-FTIR) are discussed. Considering the enviro

Defective iron-based metal-organic framework derived from discarded plastics for rapid and efficient adsorptive removal of methylmercury.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) has gained widespread attention as potential adsorbents for the removal of methylmercury (CH3Hg+). This study synthesizes a defective MIL-88A(Fe) (D-MIL-88A(Fe)) from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Structural characterization via XRD, SEM, N2 adsorption-desorption, and FT-IR confirmed the crystalline MIL-88A(Fe) framework with hierarchical porosity (0.6 nm micropores and 1.95 nm mesopores) and retained carboxyl/Fe-O functional groups, enhancing mass transfer and adsorption accessibility. Adsorption equilibrium studies revealed 93.4% CH3Hg+ removal with a
