Opto-chiasmatic arachnoiditis in brothers.

Six patients (3 couples of brothers) with adhesive arachnoiditis of the opto-chiasmatic cistern, surgically verified, are presented. Only one couple of brothers offered a possible family history of a similar condition in one maternal uncle. The visual damage had almost constantly a sudden onset and was predominantly of the axial type. No gross pathology, other than the arachnoiditic involvement of the chiasmal cistern and alterations of the anterior optic pathways, was found at surgery. Pneumocisternoencephalographic findings did not prove constantly reliable for a preoperative diagnosis of th

CT scan and gas encephalography in diagnosis of arachnoid cyst and epidermoid cyst of Galen's cistern.

The CAT scan is insufficient to make the differential diagnosis between an arachnoid cyst and an epidermoid cyst in the cistern of Galen. Gas encephalography is necessary. This procedure reveals arachnoid cysts of the commmunicating type, but is insufficient in distinguishing between an epidermoid cyst and a non-communicating arachnoid cyst. In this situation, histograms of the absorption values in each section of the lesion may be helpful for the diagnosis.

Clinical study of chronic arachnoiditis in the posterior fossa.

A series of 12 cases of chronic arachnoiditis in the posterior fossa is reported. The diagnosis in six patients was established at suboccipital craniectomy whch brought about marked improvement in symptoms. The other six were diagnosed as having arachnoiditis in the posterior fossa from the facts that improvement in clinical symptoms was achieved by lumbar air insufflation, which has often been said to be effective in arachnoiditis, and no abnormal findings were revealed by pneumoencephalo-roulette tomography. By investigating the clinical features of these cases, we came to the following conc

Septo-optic dysplasia associated with see-saw nystagmus.

Septo-optic dysplasia is a syndrome of midline abnormalities of the central nervous system resulting in absence of the septum pellucidum and dysplasia of the optic chiasm or optic nerves. The characteristic fundus findings of small, dysplastic discs and defects in the nerve fiber layer enable the clinician to predict this syndrome prior to contrast studies. An unsual form of nystagmus, see-saw nystagmus, was associated with septo-optic dysplasia in this case report.

Effect of maternal dexamethasone treatment on the type II pneumocytes in hypoplastic lung by oligohydramnios: an ultrastructural study.

A previous study documented the effects of maternal corticosteroid treatment on structural growth and functional development in fetal lungs associated with pathogenic conditions such as oligohydramnios using immunohistochemical and morphometric analyses. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of maternal dexamethasone treatment the expression of lamellar body in type II pneumocytes of the fetal rabbit lungs with hypoplasia induced by oligohydramnios using electron microscopy. Using an amniotic shunting rabbit model, pregnant rabbits were injected intravenously with either 0

Posttraumatic hydrocephalus.

Posttraumatic hydrocephalus is a treatable complication of head injury and can present with several different clinical syndromes. These include obtundation; simple failure to improve; a tetrad of psychomotor retardation, memory loss, gait trouble, and incontinence; and unusual symptoms including emotional disorder. Posttraumatic hydrocephalus seems to result from a blockage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow around the cerebral convexities. When the lumbar CSF pressure is consistently above 180 mm H2O, the hydrocephalus should be treated unless a contraindication to operation exists. Underlying

[Radiological changes in a child with fetal alcohol syndrome].

A congenital alcoholic syndrome (CAS) belongs to rarely diagnosed embryopathies . It consists of polysymptomatic misdevelopings in numerous organs of the fetus caused by alcoholic abuse through the mother during the pregnancy. The diagnosis of the CAS is established on the basis of following topics: the anamnesis confirming the chronic alcoholism of baby's mother, the excluding of congenital genetic defects and intrauterine infections as well as qualitative and quantitative feeding deficits. In the differential diagnosis should be taken congenital cranial and facial dysmorphies which are most

The resistance to cerebrospinal fluid absorption in humans. A method of evaluation by lumbo-ventricular perfusion, with particular reference to normal pressure hydrocephalus.

In order to measure the resistance to cerebrospinal fluid absorption in humans a lumbo-ventricular perfusion test, using several intraventricular pressure levels, has been developed. The test has been performed in 15 patients fulfilling criterias of normal pressure hydrocephalus. A considerable variation in the resistance to cerebrospinal fluid absorption revealed by the test indicates that clinical and pneumoencephalographic signs of normal pressure hydrocephalus are of little use in the selection of patients who may benefit from shunting procedures.
