The middle phalanx in Poland syndrome.

The classic deformity of Poland syndrome consists of the combination of unilateral aplasia of the sternocostal head of the pectoralis major muscle and an ipsilateral hypoplastic hand with simple syndactyly and short fingers. The current study specifically investigates the abnormalities of the middle phalanx in a series of 15 patients with Poland syndrome. The degree of hand hypoplasia and finger brachydactyly was classified into 3 grades: mild (n = 2), moderate (n = 10), and severe (n = 3). The middle phalanges of all fingers in all patients showed abnormalities. The degree of deficiency in th

The paper presents data on occurrence, diagnosis and treatment of alveolar echinococcosis in humans as well as possible methods of its prevention. Studies done in 2001-2003 in Poland have shown the high prevalence of the tapeworm in red foxes in the north-east (34.5%) and south-east (39.3%) of Poland with foci of infection in some counties (up to 70% foxes infected). It makes the high potential risk for human infection in these areas.

[Infectious diseases in Poland in 2000].

The decreasing tendency in incidence of infectious diseases observed in Poland in previous years as compared with 2000 has weakened or stopped. Increase in the incidence of selected infectious diseases can be linked with the improvement of surveillance resulting from the better diagnostics and greater attention paid to these diseases (including borreliosis, salmonella, and Haemophilus influenzae meningitis). Between 1999 and 2000, the most intense decrease in the number of mumps, measles, and scarlet fever cases as an effect of the end of epidemics was observed. At the same time increase in th

[Epidemiology of acoustic neuromas in Poland].

In 1996 the Polish Skull Base Surgery Society was founded and assembled mainly otolaryngologists and neurosurgeons from several dozen clinics and hospital wards. Its main aim was to encourage co-operation between those two specialties. For this reason among others a common project entitled: "Epidemiology of acoustic neuromas in Poland" was launched in 1997. Information was collected from questionnaires in seven neurosurgery and in three laryngology centres in the years from 1997-1998. So far, no epidemiology of acoustic neuromas was established for the population of Poland. In this span of tim
