Local solutions, local governance: the municipal health committee initiative in Majdal Anjar, Lebanon.

In fragile and shock-prone settings, where political instability, economic crises, and institutional fragmentation weaken central authorities, strengthening local health governance has become critical for health system resilience. Lebanon represents an example, having faced compounded shocks including economic collapse, the COVID-19 pandemic, and armed conflict, all of which have strained an already fragmented health system. Despite increasing recognition of the importance of sub-national governance, limited empirical evidence exists on how municipal-level health governance structures function

Religious beliefs and practices, political orientation, and distrust in healthcare predict attitudes toward mRNA vaccines in the United States.

Religion has contributed to societal divides regarding COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. In this study, we conducted a secondary analysis of a survey of U.S. adults (N = 4939) focused on how religious affiliations, beliefs, and practices impact attitudes toward genetic and genomic activities, one of which was mRNA vaccines. The dataset included large samples of participants from six religious groups in the U.S. (Black Protestant, Catholic, Evangelical Protestant, Jewish, Mainline Protestant, and Muslim), as well as individuals who were atheist, agnostic, or spiritual. ANCOVA results indicated that Evang

Giant malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the testis/spermatic cord: psychologic and possible etiologic complications of unethical Nazi medical experimentation.

This case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the testis/spermatic cord was found in a Holocaust survivor who was injected with an unknown substance in the left testicle while in Auschwitz concentration camp in 1943. Because malignant fibrous histiocytoma is a neoplasm rarely found in this location, with only 26 previously reported cases, a review of this entity was performed. A review of Nazi medical practices in the literature and through the Holocaust Museum research department was undertaken in an attempt to ascertain identification of the unknown substance injected into this patient; how

One Pandemic, Two Solutions: Comparing the U.S.-China Response and Health Priorities to COVID-19 from the Perspective of "Two Types of Control".

After three years of global rampage, the COVID-19 epidemic, the most serious infectious disease to occur worldwide since the 1918 influenza pandemic, is nearing its end. From the global experience, medical control and social control are the two main dimensions in the prevention and control of COVID-19. From the perspective of "two types of control", namely medical control and social control, this paper finds that the political system, economic structure, and cultural values of the United States greatly limit the government's ability to impose social control, forcing it to adopt medical control

Hajj stampede disaster, 2015: Reflections from the frontlines.

The Hajj is an annual religious mass gathering that takes place in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The complexity of its system is multidimensional, with religious, political, cultural, security, economic, communication, operational, and logistic unique challenges. This year, yet another stampede tragedy that caused around a 1,000 deaths and severe injuries, capturing worldwide media attention and exacerbating existing political tensions across the Gulf coasts was faced. Planning is important but the planning process is more important, requiring systematic analysis based on accurate collected and target

Health-Related Stigma: The Affordances of Electronic Health Management Systems in the Production of Structural Stigma.

Encounters with stigma in healthcare settings are well-documented. In recent years, significant attention has begun to be paid to how we can reduce these stigmas, including through the identification and reformation of structural forces that shape and sustain them. This article analyses 30 interviews conducted with clinical and nonclinical healthcare workers, as part of a larger project that aims to reduce health-related stigma for all. A major theme running through the interviews was the constitutive role of medical records in the production of stigma. Interview participants expressed several

Why engagement matters in policy implementation: an examination of the engagement of policy actors in the implementation of a mental health and addictions strategy.

BACKGROUND: Shifts toward "new public governance" (NPG), where policy decisions and their implementation are "co-produced" by a policy network, have captured the attention of policymakers as an approach that may produce better outcomes. It is particularly promising in mental health, where it is increasingly acknowledged that effective change requires actions by multiple actors across a range of policy and system settings. In Ontario, Canada, the government's recent mental health reform, Open Minds, Healthy Minds, Ontario's Comprehensive Mental Health and Addictions Strategy, is unique in terms

In search of common ground: Louisiana's resistance to an extreme risk protection order law for domestic violence prevention.

BACKGROUND: Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) laws allow civil courts to authorize orders to temporarily prevent a person from purchasing or possessing firearms upon finding that they pose a significant risk of harm to themselves or others. In Louisiana, a state with one of the highest rates of firearm homicide of women in the nation, multiple attempts to pass ERPO legislation have failed despite evidence of their effectiveness. We sought to identify places of common ground on the matter of domestic violence against women in Louisiana and to understand how perspectives on politics and polic

[Orthopedics and trauma surgery in national and collective defence : Resilient emergency and palliative care in crises and armed conflict situations].

BACKGROUND: The current European political security environment is very tense due to the return of conventional and hybrid warfare. National and collective defence have again become key political tasks. In this context, the resilience of the healthcare system, understood as critical infrastructures contributing to social cohesion, institutional trust and democratic stability, have moved to center stage. Orthopedics and trauma surgery (O&U) are central to injury care, while palliative medicine represents an essential component of humane and functional healthcare provision in crises and armed co

Strengthening Africa's capacity for vaccine research: Needs and challenges.

Vaccine development and production harbinger the control and eradication of infectious diseases. Vaccination played a huge role in the curtailment of disease outbreaks like smallpox and polio, especially in Africa. Despite the high demand for several vaccines in Africa due to the highly infectious disease burden, the continent still lacks adequate capacity for vaccine research and development. This paper aims to discuss the need and challenges of Africa to strengthen its capacity for vaccine research and development and also highlight practical recommendations. Some of the needs for Africa to

Nurses on the Frontlines of Collapse: Advocacy, Leadership, and HIV Care in the Wake of United States Agency for International Development's Withdrawal From Kenya, Malawi, and the Philippines.

The abrupt dissolution of United States Agency for International Development and the cessation of U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief funding have triggered a global health crisis, disproportionately affecting HIV services and frontline health systems across the Global South. This article explores how nurses are responding-not only by sustaining clinical care but by stepping into roles as policy advocates, organizers, and system innovators. Drawing from lived experiences in Kenya, Malawi, the Philippines, and beyond, we highlight the resilience, leadership, and moral clarity of nur

Hepatitis C virus elimination: So close, so far?

The advent of highly effective direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) has transformed hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection into a curable disease, with cure rates exceeding 95% across viral genotypes and clinical settings. Along with simplified, short-course treatment regimens and significant advancements in diagnostic technologies, these therapeutic breakthroughs have made eliminating HCV as a public health concern, as defined by the World Health Organization, a realistic goal. However, despite this progress, global advances toward elimination have fallen short of expectations. This review examines why

Delivering Cancer Care in Palestine: A Structured Situational Analysis from the Perspective of Oncology Nursing.

BACKGROUND: Cancer care in Palestine operates within a health system constrained by occupation, movement restrictions, resource scarcity, and chronic instability. These conditions fragment service delivery and create major inequities. OBJECTIVES: This study foregrounds the roles, challenges, and ethical responsibilities of oncology and palliative care nurses across the cancer care continuum, and examines how political instability, blockade, and health system fragmentation shape access to care and nurses' capacity to sustain services under profound constraint. METHODS: A hybrid methodology co

Invisible Hands Behind Clean Hands: Procurement Justice, Materiality, and Nursing Praxis.

Nursing ethics has long taken the bedside encounter as the moral center of practice. Yet this focus becomes incomplete when the material conditions of care are treated as ethically external to nursing itself. Ordinary clinical supplies such as gloves, masks, gowns, syringes, drapes, and linens are commonly understood as neutral instruments of safe and competent care. This paper argues that such neutrality is philosophically misleading. The materials through which nursing is enacted are embedded in global systems of labor, extraction, manufacture, circulation, use, and disposal that may involve
